The Storm Whale review – touching tale of a little leviathan's surprise visit

The Storm Whale's adaptation of Benji Davies' 2013 picture book brings a heartwarming tale to life, but falls short in its tone and execution.

For Noi, the young boy whose dad is away fishing each day, life can be lonely. However, when his dad returns home, he discovers a little whale washed up on the shore and befriends it before setting it free. This poignant story explores how solitude doesn't have to mean loneliness, a lesson passed down to Noi by his lost mother.

The show is beautifully designed, with idyllic settings and puppetry that brings the story to life. The choreography of Hayley Del Harrison's tempest scene is breathtaking, and the lighting design by Jason Salvin adds to the immersive experience.

However, the script's earnest messages can feel repetitive, and the dialogue can be overly solemn at times. The show's attempt to frame Noi's story through his friend Flo's perspective may not resonate with young audiences, who are instead treated to flights of fancy such as imagining strawberries-and-cream-tasting lighthouses.

While the puppets are adorable, particularly Keith Frederick's squishy whale creation, some aspects feel like they're holding back. Only one of Noi's six cats is fully realized, but their names – including Sandwich – add a sweet touch to the show.

Despite its efforts, The Storm Whale feels like an incomplete storm. With more developed humor and adventure, it could have become truly unforgettable. Instead, it settles for being a touching tale that needs a bit more oomph to really make it shine.

I'm totally with the haters on this one 🤦‍♂️. I mean, who thought it was a good idea to add an extra cat just to feel complete? It's like they're trying to cram too many feels into the show. And don't even get me started on those flights of fancy – if I want my puppets to be realistic, can we please just stick to them being squishy whales and sad Noi? The more ridiculous stuff is what really brings the magic, imo 🎉

so i just watched this new animated show called the storm whale 🐳💦 and i gotta say, its got some lovely moments... like when noi finds that adorable little whale on the shore 🌊🐋 but for me, the story feels a bit too heavy-handed at times. all those serious messages about not being lonely with your parents away can get a bit much 😴. and dont even get me started on how they tried to pass off nois friendship with flo... like who cares about some random cat's backstory? 🐈😒 but hey, the animation is super cute and hayley del harrisons choreography in that storm scene was literally breathtaking 💥🌪️

this adaptation is all about setting up the story but doesn't deliver on the execution 🤔. i mean, where's the depth? they're trying to pass off some wholesome vibes as profound lessons but honestly, it feels like they're just regurgitating surface-level messages 🌊. the visuals are pretty and all, but it's like they're holding back on the humor and excitement – what's the point of watching a show if it's just gonna be so mellow? 🤷‍♀️ the only thing that got me was Keith Frederick's squid whale dude tho 🐳👍

I'm not loving this adaptation, tbh 🤔. I mean, the puppets are cute, but the whole show feels like it's missing a punch of humor and excitement. It's all so serious and solemn, even for a kids' show. And don't get me wrong, the story itself is sweet, but it feels like they're holding back on some of the more interesting bits. Like, what happened to Noi's six cats?! 🐈 I want to see more of those adorable little guys! The design and choreography are pretty cool, but it's not enough to make up for the lack of humor and adventure. I need something with a bit more oomph to really get me invested in the story...

I gotta say, I was pretty meh about this show too 🤔. Don't get me wrong, the puppets are super cute and all, but I think they're kinda holding back on the storytelling. It's like they're trying to keep things real and heartfelt, but it just ends up feeling a bit too heavy-handed for my taste 😐. And yeah, that whole framing it through Flo's perspective thing? Not really my cup of tea 🤷‍♂️. I mean, I get what they were going for with the themes of loneliness and friendship, but it feels like it's been over-explained at times 💡. A bit more humor and adventure would've taken this show from just "cute" to actually memorable 🔥. Still, it's not all bad – that tempest scene though? 🌪️🔥 is a real stunner!

I was kinda disappointed with this adaptation of Benji Davies' picture book 🤔📚 the puppets are super cute though 👀 especially Keith Frederick's squishy whale creation 🐳❤️ but honestly, I felt like the show was holding back on some parts 🤷‍♀️ like those six cats - only one got to shine? 🐈😒 and don't even get me started on how repetitive the script is 📝💪 it's a great message about not being lonely with your dad away, but I needed something more exciting 💥👀 I mean, who doesn't love strawberries-and-cream-tasting lighthouses? 🍰🌊

I gotta say, I was all excited to see this show come to life 🌊👀, but sadly it fell flat for me 🤕. I mean, the puppets are super cute especially Keith's squishy whale 😍 and Hayley's choreography in the storm scene is literally mind-blowing 💥, but the tone of the show feels all over the place sometimes. It's like they're trying to convey this really deep message about not being lonely when you have friends 🤝 but it comes off as kinda preachy 🙄. And what's up with the whole Flo's perspective thing? Didn't quite work for me 🤔. The show has so much potential, but it feels like they're holding back on some of the fun stuff 😐.

I think they kinda missed the point with this one 🤔. The story itself is actually pretty beautiful, but I feel like they played it too safe and didn't take some risks. Like, I get what they're trying to say about loneliness not being so lonely, but did we really need all that repetition? And why make it all about Flo's perspective? It just feels like they were trying too hard to fit in a bunch of other storylines 🤷‍♀️. The puppets are so cute though! I love Keith Frederick's whale 🐳🎨. But yeah, if they'd just added some more humor and excitement, it could've been really special instead of just being nice 😊.

I gotta disagree, I think the show's tone is spot on, you know? It's all about embracing the quiet moments in life and finding magic in them. The solemn dialogue might not be everyone's cup of tea, but for me, that's part of its charm 🌊💕. And hey, who says kids don't love a good lighthouse with strawberries-and-cream toppings? 🤣 Maybe it's trying to speak to the kid in all of us who still believes in that sort of whimsy 😊.

🐳❤️ I'm totally in love with The Storm Whale! 🌊🎶 Their puppets are literally so cute and adorable, like Keith Frederick's squishy whale 🐋😍, it's like they're gonna steal my heart away! 💖 The design is just stunning, especially the idyllic settings, I feel like I'm right there with Noi on the beach 🏖️. And the tempest scene choreography? Whoa 😮, Hayley Del Harrison must be a genius! 🔥 But, for me, it's all about the story and it just feels... off 💔 like it's missing something. The dialogue is so solemn at times, I get it, but can't they add some fun moments to balance it out? 🤣 Maybe that's why I wish there was more adventure or humor in the show? That would make it truly unforgettable for me! 🌟

idk wut happened 2 the tone 4 this show its like they took every sad moment n made u feel all down in the dumps 🤕. i mean dont get me wrong, its cute n all but somethin just feels off. thats why they should've added more humor & adventure or it jus falls flat 😐

🌊🐳 I just watched The Storm Whale adaptation with my kiddo and while it was super cute & beautifully designed 🎨, I gotta say I felt like something was missing 🤔. The story itself is so heartwarming & poignant, but sometimes the seriousness got a bit too much for me 😴. I love how they wove in Noi's lost mom, but some of the dialogue felt really preachy 🙄. And don't even get me started on the weird strawberry lighthouse detour 🍓🔦. The puppets were adorable tho! 👀 Keith's squishy whale was my fave 💕. Maybe they'll take notes from other shows that balance heart & humor? 😊

OMG u guys 🤩 I just saw this show & I'm still reeling! The puppets tho 😍 Keith's whale is like literally the cutest thing I've ever seen! But idk, something about the tone felt off? Like, it was trying to be so serious but also had these super silly parts that didn't fit? 🤔 I mean, who thought a strawberry-and-cream-tasting lighthouse was a good idea lol? 😂🌊 The design tho is gorgeous, loved the lighting & them stormy scenes were insane! 😲 But overall, it felt like they missed the mark a bit. More humor & adventure would've made it SO much better 🤪

I gotta say, I was kinda disappointed by this show 🤔. The design is super pretty, no doubt about it 🌊. But the tone feels off, you know? It's trying to be all serious and heartwarming, but it comes across as a bit too heavy-handed at times 💔. And don't even get me started on the dialogue 😴. I mean, I get what they're trying to say about loneliness and stuff, but can't we just add some humor or something to lighten the mood? 🤣

And what's up with the perspective thing? I feel like it's trying to make this story more interesting, but it ends up feeling kinda forced 🙄. I'd have loved to see more of Noi and his cat crew, especially Sandwich 🐈. But yeah, overall it feels like they were holding back on some stuff 👀.

Still, the puppets are adorable, especially that whale guy 🐳. So yeah, it's a nice show and all, but it's just not grabbing me as much as I thought it would 😐. Maybe with some tweaks, it could be more awesome though 💪
