The Story of How Cats Conquered the World Just Got Weirder

New Study Revives Debate Over Cat Origins, Suggests Feline Domestication Took Centuries Longer Than Thought.

A recent study has reignited the debate over when cats first became domesticated. Scientists have long been fascinated by the origins of these enigmatic animals, and a new research team has made some surprising discoveries that challenge prevailing theories on cat domestication.

According to the researchers, who analyzed DNA from 70 ancient cats found near human settlements stretching back over 10,000 years, domestic cats did not become widespread in Europe until around 2,000 years ago. This finding is in stark contrast to a widely held theory that domestic cats originated in the Levant region of West Asia about 10,000 years ago.

The team's research also suggests that modern domestic cats are more closely related to wildcats from North Africa than those from the Levant. Furthermore, they found that some cat remains discovered on the island of Sardinia off Italy are actually linked to North African wildcats, indicating that people introduced a distinct population of wildcats to the island around 2,200 years ago.

While this new study provides some answers about cat origins, it also raises more questions than it solves. The researchers admit that there is still much to be learned about the domestication process, particularly regarding the timing and location of early domestication events.

According to evolutionary biologist Jonathan Losos, who commented on the study, DNA evidence suggests that European domestic cats arrived around 2,000 years ago, while archaeological findings indicate a more recent arrival date of around 3,000 years.

The researchers are now planning to dig deeper into ancient samples from African sites, including Egyptian mummies from the Pharaonic period, in an effort to better understand when and how domestication occurred.

One thing is certain: cats have been our companions for thousands of years, bringing joy and affection to countless humans around the world. As scientists continue to unravel the mysteries of their origins, we can only imagine what other surprises this enigmatic creature has in store for us.

omg I'm like totally fascinated by this study ๐Ÿฑ๐Ÿ’ก so apparently cats took centuries longer to become domesticated than thought? that's wild! 10,000 years seems like a looong time to wait for our feline friends to join the human family. and now we're learning more about their ancestors from North Africa? cool, I wish I knew more about how people introduced those wildcats to Sardinia ๐Ÿค” what were they thinking back then? did they know how much joy cats would bring? ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ˜ป

OMG, I'm low-key freaking out over this new study ๐Ÿคฏ! I mean, who knew that domestic cats didn't become a thing in Europe until like 2k years ago?! Mind blown, fam ๐Ÿ˜ฑ. And the part about them being more closely related to wildcats from North Africa than the Levant? Crazy talk ๐Ÿˆ๐Ÿ”ฅ. Can't wait for them to dig deeper into those ancient African samples and Egyptian mummies โ€“ I'm sure they'll find some cat-tastic clues ๐Ÿ”๐Ÿ’ก. One thing's for sure, though: cats have been our BFFs (Best Feline Friends?) for thousands of years, and it's wild to think about all the secrets they're still keeping ๐Ÿคซ๐Ÿˆ.

omg u guys, i'm low-key obsessed with cats rn ๐Ÿฑ๐Ÿ˜ป! but seriously, this new study on cat origins is giving me LIFE ๐Ÿ’โ€โ™€๏ธ! like, who knew that domesticated cats weren't exactly 10k years old like we thought? ๐Ÿ˜ฎ it's wild to think that they actually spread out from north africa to europe way later than we thought, around 2000 yrs ago ๐ŸŒ

i'm also kinda curious about why archaeologists and scientists have different theories on when european domestic cats arrived ๐Ÿค”. 2000 yrs old or 3000 yrs old? which one is it?! ๐Ÿ˜‚ and what about those egyptian mummies? are they related to north african wildcats too? ๐Ÿง

anyway, can we talk about how amazing cats are for like, thousands of years now?! ๐Ÿ’• they've been our buddies and our enemies, our saviors and our overlords... just kidding (kinda ๐Ÿ˜‚). but seriously, scientists keep uncovering new info, and i'm all in ๐Ÿค“. bring on the cat origins 2.0! ๐Ÿ”

omg i thought domestic cats originated like 10k yrs ago ๐Ÿคฏ๐Ÿ˜ฎ so this new study is totally blowing my mind! ๐Ÿคฏ they found that europeans didn't get domesticated cats until like 2k yrs ago tho ๐Ÿ™„ it's kinda crazy how much we don't know about cat history ๐Ÿ‘€ and i'm so down for more research on those ancient egyptian mummies ๐Ÿง maybe they'll uncover some cool secrets ๐Ÿ˜ธ

๐Ÿ™„ I'm shocked that it took so long to figure out when cats became domesticated ๐Ÿคฏ I mean, 2,000 years ago is a whole different world ๐ŸŒŽ and I'm not just talking about the fashion ๐Ÿ‘— I'm talking about the fact that people were still trying to tame wildcats like they were livestock ๐Ÿ„ it's amazing how much we've learned from our furry friends in such a short time of time โฑ๏ธ

๐Ÿฑ๐Ÿ” "The truth is rarely pure and never simple." I mean think about it, DNA evidence says one thing, but archaeological findings say another... it's like, cats are still keeping secrets from us ๐Ÿ˜ธ

I'm loving how much we've learned about cat history recently ๐Ÿฑ๐Ÿ’ก! I mean, 2,000 years ago? That's ancient history! I was always thinking that cats just kinda showed up one day and became our BFFs, but now it seems like it took some time for them to become super domesticated. The fact that they're more closely related to North African wildcats than Levant ones is mind-blowing ๐Ÿคฏ. And Sardinia? Who knew people were introducing new cats to an island just to hang out with their humans? ๐ŸŒด It's gonna be interesting to see what more research reveals about cat origins!

idk about these cat origins... it's wild how much we thought we knew about them already ๐Ÿˆ๐Ÿค”. 10k yrs ago is a pretty old time frame to be talking about domestication, but I guess the dna says otherwise ๐Ÿ˜. its cool that they're gonna dig deeper into ancient samples tho, maybe we'll finally get some concrete answers about how cats became our little overlords ๐Ÿ‘‘.

I mean, think about it ๐Ÿคฏ... 10,000 years ago was like, totally expected to be the answer right? But nope! ๐Ÿ˜‚ It's crazy how cat domestication is still a thing of debate. I guess that's just what makes studying ancient history so fascinating ๐Ÿฆ”. So, it's actually gonna take more DNA analysis and digging up those Egyptian mummies ๐Ÿ’€... can't wait to see what they find out next ๐Ÿ”!

๐Ÿฑ so it looks like those theories about cats being super ancient were way off... i mean 2k years ago is still pretty old but 10k years ago seems pretty wild now that you think about it ๐Ÿคฏ and what's up with the sardinia discovery? people brought in north african wildcats from who knows where... it just gets more complicated ๐Ÿ˜….

I'm so stoked about this new study on cat origins!!! ๐Ÿˆ๐Ÿ’ก I mean, who knew it took centuries longer than thought for our feline friends to become domesticated? ๐Ÿ˜Š Like, 2,000 years ago is still pretty recent in the grand scheme of human history. And can you believe they found evidence that North African wildcats are actually more closely related to modern domestic cats?! ๐Ÿคฏ That's like, whoa. I love how it's opened up even more questions and mysteries about our cat companions, but honestly, I'm just excited to learn more about these amazing animals! ๐ŸŒŸ They bring so much joy and affection into our lives, and it's only natural that we want to know more about their origins. Can't wait for the next discovery! ๐Ÿ˜Š

omg i'm literally so done with how long it took cats to become domesticated ๐Ÿˆ๐Ÿ˜ด like 2k yrs ago?! and now they're still being super independent and not really acknowledging their owners as much lol just kidding sorta... but seriously can u believe that people actually had to introduce north african wildcats to sardinia like 2200 yrs ago? ๐Ÿคฏ that's wild. so i guess we'll have to wait a bit longer for the full deets on cat origins, but meanwhile let's just keep loving those feline overlords ๐Ÿ’–

๐Ÿค” I mean, 10k yrs is still crazy long to domesticate a wild animal, but like 2k yrs ago seems way too late? I think we gotta rethink our whole history lesson plan ๐Ÿ“š, idk if i'm just being too harsh or something... maybe cats just took their sweet time getting domesticated and were all like "hey, humans, we're in" ๐Ÿˆ๐Ÿ˜Ž.

lol I always thought cats were super ancient lol ๐Ÿ˜‚ just found out they actually came to europe like 2k years ago? that's wild ๐Ÿคฏ didn't know they came from north africa too ๐Ÿˆ it's crazy how much we can learn from dna and archaeology ๐Ÿงฌ๐Ÿ’ก this study is def sparking some interesting conversations online ๐Ÿ‘

๐Ÿฑ๐Ÿค” so like this new study on cat origin is pretty interesting right? but its also kinda mind blown that domestic cats didnt become widespread in Europe until 2k ago ๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™‚๏ธ like, who knew cats took so long to make friends with humans lol.

and idk about the north african wildcat connection too... it sounds like people introduced them to sardinia around 2200 yrs ago which is wild ๐ŸŒŠ but also raises more questions than answers, like how did that happen? and why did domestication take so long in europe.

anyway i think its cool that scientists are still figuring this out and learning new things about our furry friends ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿง

I'm still trying to wrap my head around this new study ๐Ÿคฏ. I mean, 2,000 years is a pretty long time for cats to just start showing up in Europe out of nowhere. It's like, where were they the other 9,000+ years? And what about all the old Egyptian mummies with cat remains? Is it possible that European domestic cats are actually descended from some ancient North African feline population? ๐Ÿค” I don't know, man... it's just too much to take in. But at the same time, I'm kinda stoked to think that there's still so much we don't know about our furry friends ๐Ÿฑ. Maybe this study will lead to even more discoveries and a better understanding of how they ended up in our homes ๐Ÿ’ก.

omg, i'm loving these new cat discovery vibes ๐Ÿˆ๐Ÿง so it's like our feline friends have been sneaking around for way longer than we thought, right? and the whole north africa thing is wild, i mean who knew our ancestors were basically importing wildcats as pets lol. anyway, it's cool that scientists are digging deeper into ancient samples, can't wait to see what other secrets they uncover ๐Ÿค”

idk about this study... 10,000 yrs ago domestic cats originated? that seems way too early for me ๐Ÿค” i mean think about it, humans were still hunter-gatherers back then. how did they just magically tame wildcats? and what's with the difference in dna between levant and north africa? sounds fishy to me ๐Ÿฑ๐Ÿ’โ€โ™€๏ธ

and what's up with joneson losos saying egyptian mummies are ancient enough to have DNA evidence? that's a pretty big leap ๐Ÿคฏ also, why 2k yrs ago europeans domesticated cats? seems like we just jumped into this timeline out of thin air ๐Ÿ•ฐ๏ธ
