Three‑month‑old recovering after alleged abuse; Madera County babysitter released on bail

Local Authorities Fail To Protect Infant from Alleged Abuse: Madera County Mother Speaks Out

In a case that has left the community shaken, 3-month-old Braxton Musselman is recovering at Valley Children's Hospital after suffering severe head trauma allegedly inflicted by his babysitter, Tonya Hamilton. The young infant was found unresponsive by the family's caregiver on January 26th and was rushed into emergency surgery to save his life.

According to medical professionals, Braxton's injuries were not consistent with any type of fall, but rather a clear case of intentional abuse. In an effort to alleviate pressure on his brain, surgeons were forced to remove the right half of Braxton's skull, a procedure that has left the family reeling.

"It's like I had one baby that morning and then I came here and now I have a whole other baby," said Braxton's mother Tori Nelson, visibly emotional as she spoke about the devastating change in her son's condition. The family is still struggling to come to terms with their loss, particularly Chris Musselman, Braxton's father.

"Our three-month-old Braxton can't talk, can't explain to us, can't ask for help," he said. "To not be able to console your child, it's heart-wrenching and it's something no parent should ever have to go through."

Just ten days after the alleged abuse, Madera County Sheriff's deputies arrested Tonya Hamilton on felony child abuse charges. However, in a bizarre twist, she was later released on bail and is scheduled to appear in court on March 9th.

The family has since started a GoFundMe to cover Braxton's medical expenses and rehabilitation. As the community rallies around them, many are left wondering how such a heinous crime could have occurred under their noses, leaving no one accountable for the safety of this innocent child.

omg i'm so shocked 😱 this is just not right... like how can someone do that to a baby?! 🤯 i mean i know we've all had those moments where we're stressed and need a break but using physical harm? no way... 🚫 it's crazy that the babysitter was arrested in the first place, i guess they were keeping an eye on her or something 👀 and now she's out on bail already? 🤔 what even is that?! 🙄 anyway... my heart goes out to tori & chris musselman, their little braxton deserves so much love & care 💕

Oh my god 🤯 this is just heartbreaking 😭 I'm literally shaking thinking about that poor baby Braxton 💔 his parents must be going through the worst nightmare ever 😩 how can someone do such a thing to an innocent little soul? 🙏 I'm so angry but at the same time, I don't even know where to start with this one... like how did they let it happen under their noses? 🤷‍♀️ I just want to give Tori and Chris all my love and support right now 💕 they're doing the best they can as parents and I'm here for them 1000% 💯 Braxton's gonna be okay, I know it 😊

I mean, can you even believe what happened to that little guy Braxton? I'm still trying to wrap my head around it... like, his babysitter is supposed to be taking care of him and instead she's allegedly abusing him 🤯. And the worst part is, she was released on bail like a week after the whole thing went down? It just doesn't sit right with me... I mean, how are people supposed to know what's going on behind closed doors? The family needs all that support right now and it's like they're still dealing with this nightmare 🤕. And have you seen those pics of Braxton in the hospital? It's heartbreaking... my thoughts are definitely with them, but I'm also thinking about how we can make sure something like this never happens again 😔

😔 This case is an egregious example of the vulnerabilities that exist within our societal fabric, particularly when it comes to protecting the most defenseless members of our community - children. The lack of oversight and accountability displayed by local authorities is nothing short of alarming, and raises fundamental questions about the state of child welfare in our country.

It's disturbing to note that Tonya Hamilton was released on bail just ten days after the alleged abuse, despite being charged with felony child abuse charges. This leniency can be seen as a tacit endorsement of her actions, which is not only unacceptable but also perpetuates a culture of impunity for perpetrators of such heinous crimes.

The fact that Braxton's family is still reeling from the traumatic experience and struggling to come to terms with their loss highlights the devastating consequences of such crimes. It's imperative that we, as a society, take a closer look at our child welfare systems and work towards creating a more robust and effective framework for protecting our most vulnerable citizens 🤕

Man, I'm still trying to wrap my head around this one 🤯... 3 months old and already dealing with trauma on a level that's just not right 😔. How do we even process the fact that someone was just sitting there watching him and no one did anything? It's like, where were all these people when he needed them most? 🚨 The whole thing feels so avoidable, you know? Like, how hard is it to notice if a kid's being hurt or neglected? 🤷‍♂️ The family's pain is real and I hope they get the justice they deserve 💔.

Ugh, I'm still fuming about this story 🤯. The fact that Tonya Hamilton was released on bail so soon after being arrested is just infuriating. Like, don't they have a system in place to keep us safe? It's not like she just went home and took her phone off or something 📱.

And can we talk about how Valley Children's Hospital didn't do their job right either? I mean, removing half of Braxton's skull is no joke, it's a major surgery. The fact that they're still trying to recover him means there must be some serious questions asked about the care he received 🤕.

It's all just so frustrating and heart-wrenching at the same time 😩. My sympathies are with Braxton's family, but I'm also worried about how other kids will be protected in situations like this. It's a mess, plain and simple 💔.

This is just great 🤯... another case where the people in charge fail to keep our kids safe. I mean, come on, 10 days from alleged abuse and she's out on bail? That's just wrong. And what really gets me is that the family has to deal with this after they've already lost their baby boy. The trauma they're going through is real, and no one can even begin to imagine how hard it must be for them. And let's not forget about the fact that a whole half of Braxton's skull had to be removed because of someone else's negligence... just heartbreaking 😩. It's like the system is broken, and until we fix it, these types of tragedies will keep happening 🤷‍♂️.

🤕😱 this is just so messed up... like how can someone do that to a tiny human? 🚫💔 the fact that Tonya Hamilton was released on bail is just gut-wrenching 🙄... what's wrong with our justice system, tho? 😩 I mean, I'm glad the community is coming together for Braxton's family but it's all so frustrating that there's no concrete action being taken to make sure this doesn't happen again 💔
