I'm still trying to wrap my head around this deal. So basically we're selling out our own social media app to China? I mean I get that Congress passed a law requiring the sale of TikTok's American ops, but can't we just, like, keep the app in the US and handle it locally? Instead of giving control to a joint venture with Oracle and Silver Lake...it's just gonna be a whole mess. And what about all those user data security concerns? I'm pretty sure that 19.9% stake ByteDance still holds is way too much for my liking
I'm not sure if I should be relieved or uneasy about this deal . On one hand, it's great that we can finally put this whole TikTok drama behind us. Having a joint venture with US-based investors like Oracle and Silver Lake seems like a good way to keep the app around while still ensuring some level of separation from ByteDance.
But at the same time, I worry about whether this deal is really going to give us the assurances we need about user data security . The fact that the Chinese government is being so vague about its plans is a bit unsettling. And let's be real, we all know how much influence China can have on tech companies.
I guess we'll just have to wait and see how this plays out . I'm keeping my fingers crossed that Congress will do some serious digging into this deal and make sure it's not a recipe for disaster .
