TikTok tightens age verification across Europe

TikTok has announced plans to tighten its age verification measures across Europe, rolling out enhanced technology to better identify and prevent minors from using the platform.

Under new measures, TikTok's systems will assess a user's likely age based on their profile information and activity. If the platform detects an account belonging to someone under 13, a specialist moderator will review the case to determine whether it should be banned. Users in Europe will receive notifications explaining these measures and be given the opportunity to learn more.

The platform also allows users to report accounts that they suspect may belong to underage individuals, who can then be flagged for further review by moderators or specialists.

TikTok has stated that it removes approximately 6 million underage accounts from its platform every month. The company acknowledges that there is no single ideal solution to verifying age and preserving user privacy.

These measures are part of a pilot program launched last year in Europe, which helped the platform identify and remove thousands more underage accounts. TikTok worked with data protection regulators to ensure compliance with EU data protection standards.

As social media bans for under 16s become increasingly common, such as in Australia, where a ban went into effect last month, other platforms are taking similar steps. Reddit has even filed a lawsuit against its own proposed ban.

In the UK, there is growing public pressure and cross-party support for an under-16 social media ban, with Prime Minister Keir Starmer stating that "all options" are on the table. The House of Lords will vote next week on proposals for such a ban, with a binding vote potentially looming in the coming months.

πŸ€”πŸ“± just saw this news and I'm like πŸ™„ how can social media apps be so chill about minors using them? πŸ˜’ I mean, TikTok's already removing 6 million underage accounts monthly, but it seems like more needs to be done 🚫.

I guess it's good that they're working with regulators and whatnot πŸ’», but shouldn't there be a stricter system in place? 🀝 Like, don't get me wrong, I love TikTok and all, but I'm just concerned about those little ones getting caught up in the online world πŸ‘§πŸΌ.

And omg, a social media ban for under 16s is like, totally being considered πŸ“Š! Australia's already got it, and now the UK's getting close 🀞. Maybe we'll see other countries follow suit too? πŸ’ͺ

OMG 🀯 TikTok's new age verification measures are low-key awesome 😎 I mean, 6 million underage accounts get removed every month is a big deal πŸ’ͺ! The EU pilot program was a good idea πŸ‘ and now it's rolling out across Europe πŸ‡ͺπŸ‡Ί. But, let's be real, there's no one-size-fits-all solution πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ to verifying age without messing with user privacy 🚫. I'm all for keeping minors safe online πŸ”’, but we gotta make sure we're not overstepping our bounds πŸ‘€. The UK's growing pressure for a social media ban is, like, understandable πŸ€”, especially with Australia leading the way πŸ‡¦πŸ‡Ί. Reddit's lawsuit against its own proposed ban is, tho, a whole other story 🀯...

πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ I mean, come on, it's about time TikTok got its act together and started taking this whole underage thing seriously! πŸ™„ I know some people might say that 13 is too young to have an account, but honestly, can you really blame them? 😊 The platform needs to be more proactive in identifying and removing minors before they get into trouble. Those 6 million accounts they remove every month don't exactly fill me with confidence that they're doing enough.

And yeah, I agree that there's no one-size-fits-all solution when it comes to age verification, but that doesn't mean TikTok should be slacking off! πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ The fact that they're working with data protection regulators is a good start, but we need to see more concrete action. It's like, what's the point of having these measures if they're just gonna sit on them? ⏱️

I'm glad some other platforms are taking notice and stepping up their game, though! πŸ“ˆ Reddit filing a lawsuit against its own proposed ban is pretty funny, though πŸ˜‚. But seriously, it's about time we start treating online safety like the big deal it is. πŸ‘Š

πŸ€” just thinkin' about how tiktok's new measures might affect users... like what if it's not always 100% accurate? we've all seen those viral vids where someone's clearly underage but still manages to get a bunch of followers lol. i feel bad for the kids who are trying to grow their online presence without gettin' caught, but at the same time, safety should be the priority πŸ’• so fingers crossed that these new measures do the trick and help prevent any major issues 🀞

OMG, this is so needed! I was like 12 when TikTok first came out and I'm still surprised how many underage kids were using it πŸ€―β€β™€οΈπŸ˜‚... anyway, it's awesome that they're taking steps to protect minors and it's great that they're working with data protection regulators too πŸ‘. And yeah, social media bans for under 16s are getting more popular - I remember when Instagram introduced the 'strongly' rule and some people were all upset about it πŸ™„... but honestly, safety first, right? πŸ’―

so tiktok is finally stepping up its game to protect minors πŸ€”, but like, 6 million underage accounts every month still sounds crazy to me... i mean, what are these mods doing over there? πŸ™„ and have you seen the red thread of all the other social media platforms trying to keep their users safe too? it's like we're all trying to weave this huge tapestry together πŸ’‘, but sometimes it feels like one step forward is two steps back... australia just banned under 16s on tiktok, reddit's fighting against its own ban and now the uk's getting pressure for a similar ban 🀯, what's next? will we have to get a special "social media concierge" to keep an eye on us all? πŸ˜‚

I'm not sure I trust TikTok's new age verification measures πŸ˜’. Can't they just implement something simple like ID verification like Facebook did back in 2018? But nope, now it's all about fancy algorithms and specialist moderators πŸ€–. What's to stop them from misidentifying legit users or unfairly targeting certain groups? And what about user privacy concerns - are we really sure our profile info and activity data isn't being mishandled? The more I think about it, the less I believe TikTok has got this one right πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ.

I just can't help but think of MySpace back in the day πŸ˜‚. Remember when you could just join up and start posting away? It was like, totally liberating! Now, social media is all about safety and security, which I guess is a good thing πŸ€”. But it's crazy to think that even TikTok has to worry about underage users now. I mean, 6 million accounts removed every month? That's wild πŸš€. And what's with the notifications and reporting system? It just feels like an extra layer of stress for all us old folks 😩. Anyway, I'm sure it's all necessary. We just gotta adapt to the times, right? πŸ“±πŸ‘

OMG u guys 🀯 i just read that TikTok is gonna make it harder for kids under 13 to use their app lol like whats the point of even having an age limit anymore anyway lol its not like they're gonna be able to figure out who's a kid and who's not anyway theyre all sneaky like me when i was a teenager 🀫 but seriously tho its kinda cool that theyre working with EU regulators to make sure their system is legit and safe for users... or at least thats what they say πŸ˜…

you know how we're always worried about our kids online and how they can get exploited or whatnot πŸ€”... but at the same time we gotta think about their freedom of expression, you feel? like, tiktok's trying to strike this balance between keeping them safe and not stifling their creativity... but it's a tricky dance, right? because if they're too strict, they might just end up pushing kids under 13 into other platforms that don't have the same safeguards πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ. it's all about finding that sweet spot where we can trust our kids to make good choices online without over-regulating them. and honestly, i think that's a conversation we should be having in schools too... how do we even prepare them for this digital landscape when we can barely navigate our own relationships with technology πŸ“±?

omg just heard about tiktok's new age verification measures 🀯 i mean its not like they haven't been trying to improve their safety features for ages but this is a big step forward! i'm all for keeping minors safe online, its crazy to think 6 million underage accounts are removed every month tho that's just mind blown

anyway im loving how other platforms are taking notice and implementing similar measures its like everyone's getting it now πŸ™Œ australia's ban on under 16s social media is still a bit harsh though but i guess thats just the way its gonna go

cant wait to see how tiktok's new pilot program turns out, hope they get it right this time πŸ˜‚ and btw who else remembers when reddit filed a lawsuit against their own proposed ban lol
