TikTok to strengthen age-verification technology across EU

TikTok is set to launch a new age verification system across the European Union, marking a significant step in its efforts to tackle underage users. The move comes as pressure mounts on social media giants to improve their methods for identifying and removing child accounts.

The new technology, which has been quietly tested in EU countries over the past year, uses a combination of profile information, video analysis, and behavioral signals to predict whether an account belongs to someone under 13. Accounts flagged by the system will be reviewed by human moderators before being potentially removed.

TikTok claims that its approach is designed to comply with EU data protection rules and has worked closely with Ireland's Data Protection Commission to develop the system. In contrast, other major platforms such as YouTube have employed more piecemeal approaches to age verification.

The rollout of TikTok's new system comes amid growing concerns about the impact of social media on young users. A recent ban in Australia has seen over 4.7 million accounts removed across 10 platforms since December, with experts warning that similar measures could be necessary in the EU.

UK politicians have also expressed increasing alarm at the amount of time children spend on their smartphones, with Labour leader Keir Starmer suggesting he may support a social media ban for under-16s. The European parliament is pushing for age limits on social media, while Denmark wants to ban platforms altogether for those under 15.

However, the effectiveness of these measures remains uncertain, particularly when it comes to identifying and removing child accounts that have already been created. A recent investigation found that moderators were being told to allow under-13s to stay on platforms if their parents claimed they were overseeing their accounts – a loophole that could potentially be exploited by users seeking to avoid detection.

As the debate over social media regulation continues, TikTok's new age verification system represents a significant step forward in an effort to protect vulnerable young users. But with the European Union's data protection rules still evolving, it remains to be seen whether these efforts will be enough to address the growing concerns surrounding social media and child safety.

I don’t usually comment but this TikTok thing is crazy 😂. I mean, they're finally taking steps to tackle underage users which is about time. But the fact that other platforms like YouTube are still using piecemeal approaches makes me wonder if they're just not bothered 🤷‍♂️.

And can we talk about how weird it is that parents are getting away with letting under-13s stay on these platforms if they claim to be overseeing their accounts? Like, what even is that loophole? 🙄. It's one thing for kids to make mistakes online but another for adults to be dodgy about it too.

I'm not sure if TikTok's new system will catch all the bad guys or if it'll just push the problem elsewhere. But at least they're trying, I guess 💯. The EU needs to keep pushing these regulations forward so that we can get some real answers here 🤔.

omg u guys TikTok just dropped this new age verification system across EU & it's lowkey a game changer 🤩 they're using profile info vids analysis & behavioral signals 2 predict if its an underage account lol can't wait 2 see how this plays out 😂 the thing is, other platforms r still playin catch up on this so I'm hyped that TikTok's taking it serious 🙌 plus, with the EU's data protection rules evolvin, maybe they'll get it right nxt time 💯 fingers crossed 👍

OMG u guys TikTok is finally taking this super seriously they're actually doing something about all those underage users its about time 🙄 I mean i know some ppl might say its just a ploy 2 get more control over our kids but honestly its better than nothing right now like we cant even rely on parents 2 supervise their kids 24/7 anymore so at least TikTok's got this new system in place that uses AI and all sorts of fancy tech 2 detect those under-13 accounts i just hope it actually works tho lol dont wanna hear about another case where some kid slips through the cracks

I'm thinking about how TikTok is finally taking this age verification thing seriously 🤞📱. It's about time, right? I mean, those other platforms have been playing around with it for ages. But this new system sounds like a solid step forward. Using video analysis and behavioral signals to predict if someone's under 13... that's some clever tech 💡. And the fact that they're working closely with data protection commissions is pretty cool 👍. I'm still skeptical, though - how effective will it really be? Those loopholes in the current system are a major concern 🤔. Still, it's better than nothing. Let's just hope these efforts don't get watered down too much by all the other regulations that are coming out of Brussels 🙄.

I'm low-key impressed that TikTok is finally taking age verification seriously 😊. I mean, we all know how problematic underage users can be on platforms like this. But what's crazy is that YouTube has been playing it so loose with their approach 🤔. Like, they just kinda... wing it? Anyway, I think it's dope that TikTok is working closely with the Irish Data Protection Commission to develop a system that actually complies with EU rules 💻. We need more platforms like this doing the right thing when it comes to protecting our young users 👍. And let's be real, if other countries start implementing age limits or banning platforms altogether, it's only gonna get more serious 🚨. Time for social media giants to step up their game and show us they care about the safety of our kids 💕
