TikTok to strengthen age-verification technology across EU

TikTok is set to expand its age verification technology across Europe in the coming weeks as concerns about minors using social media platforms intensify. The move comes amidst growing calls for stricter regulations, with several countries considering bans or limits on social media use by under-16s.

The platform's new system will analyze user profile information, posted videos, and behavior signals to predict whether an account may belong to a minor under the age of 13. This technology will be used in conjunction with human moderators to review accounts flagged as potentially belonging to minors, rather than automatically banning them.

Users will have the option to appeal against the removal of their account if an error has been made, and can provide additional verification such as facial age estimation by Yoti, credit card authorization, or government-approved identification. The European pilot program led to the removal of thousands of accounts, demonstrating the effectiveness of this approach.

TikTok maintains that its system complies with data and privacy laws, stating that it only uses the predicted likelihood of a user being under 13 to decide whether to send an account to human moderators or monitor and improve the technology. The company emphasizes its commitment to protecting young users, particularly teens, while ensuring safety in a "privacy-preserving manner".

Other social media platforms, including Meta (which owns Facebook), are also exploring similar age verification technologies. In December, Australia implemented a social media ban for minors under 16, resulting in over 4.7 million accounts being removed across multiple platforms.

The UK government has expressed concerns about the amount of time children and teenagers spend on their smartphones, with Prime Minister Keir Starmer suggesting he is open to a social media ban for young people. The European parliament and Denmark are also pushing for age limits or bans on social media use by minors.

TikTok's expansion of its age verification technology aims to address these concerns and provide a more effective solution to ensure the safety and well-being of young users across Europe.

OMG, I'm kinda glad TikTok is doing this πŸ™Œ, you know how some of my friends are always trying to hide their age on the app? It's crazy! 🀯 I mean, I get it, some people might not be ready for all the responsibility that comes with social media, and having a system in place to verify users can't hurt, right? πŸ’‘ But at the same time, I'm like, what if it's too invasive? Like, my parents are always on my case about being online responsibly, and I feel like this new system might just add another layer of stress for me and other teens. πŸ€” Still, I guess it's better than just having no age verification at all... we need some kind of balance here, you know? 😊

πŸ€” so like i was thinking, if tiktok is gonna expand their age verification tech across europe, it makes sense for them to do it in a way that's easy for users to appeal against the removal of their accounts... facial age estimation is cool and all, but what about when the software is wrong? 🚫 we need more transparency here. and btw, why can't other social media platforms just use tiktok's tech instead of reinventing the wheel? 🀯

omg i think this is a great move by TikTok !! 🀩 they're really taking steps to protect their younger users, which is def a positive step forward for social media platforms as a whole πŸ’• the fact that they're using human moderators too is so smart - it's not just about tech, but also about having real people who care πŸ‘

[πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈπŸ‘€] When will they invent an app that just checks if you're 13 or not and then just lets you post whatever? πŸ“ΈπŸ’β€β™€οΈ [πŸ˜‚](https://tenor.com/gifs/laughter-30 secs/bubblegum-smile)

OMG, this is like, so needed πŸ™Œ! I've seen so many younger folks getting sucked into social media and it's crazy 🀯. It's not just about TikTok tho, we need to talk about the bigger picture here πŸ“Š. We can't just rely on one platform to keep our young ones safe. We need stricter regulations across the board πŸ”’.

I'm all for giving users the option to appeal if they think an error has been made, that's so fair πŸ’β€β™€οΈ. And let's be real, facial age estimation by Yoti? That's like, a total game-changer πŸ€–! We gotta make sure our data and privacy laws are on point too πŸ“.

It's also interesting to see other platforms like Meta taking notice and exploring similar tech πŸ”. The UK government should def take a closer look at this πŸ‘€. We can't just sit back and let our youth get lost in the virtual world 🌐. This is a step in the right direction, fingers crossed that it'll lead to real change πŸ’ͺ!

omg u guys, tiktok is finally doin somethin about all the minors on their platform πŸ™…β€β™€οΈπŸ‘€ i mean we gotta think about our youth and keep them safe online, right? πŸ‘ this new age verification tech is a good start, but it's not just about tiktok - other platforms like meta need to step up their game too πŸ€” they're all talkin bout protectin young users, but its time for action πŸ’ͺ

i'm glad australia took the lead on implementin that social media ban for minors under 16, tho πŸ™Œ and i'm keepin an eye on the uk gov's plans to look out for those young minds πŸ‘΄πŸ’» gotta keep them protected from harm online! 😊

πŸš¨πŸ‘€ just saw that TikTok is expanding its age verification tech across Europe 🀯 and it's kinda cool that they're using AI to predict if an account belongs to a minor πŸ‘Ά meanwhile, Australia removed 4.7 million accounts in Dec and the UK gov's worried about teens on their phones πŸ“±πŸ‘¦ and now some countries wanna ban social media for minors 😬 think this tech is a step in the right direction but we'll see how it plays out πŸ’―

πŸ€” I think it's about time we got a handle on how old people are on these social media platforms πŸ™„, especially with all the weird stuff that can be found online 😳. It's just common sense to want to make sure minors aren't getting exposed to mature content or even worse πŸ‘€.

TikTok is trying to do its part by implementing this new age verification tech, and I'm all for it πŸ™Œ. It's about time we took these issues seriously, especially with how much time kids are spending on their screens πŸ“±. Australia just banned minors under 16 from social media, so this can't be a bad thing, right? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

Ugh, this is just another example of how corrupt big tech companies think they can just outsmart everyone. Like, good luck with that facial age estimation by Yoti, right? That's gonna be a nightmare for people with darker skin tones or even people who wear a lot of makeup πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ. And what about when the AI gets it wrong? Do we really want to be relying on a system that's only as good as its algorithms? It feels like they're just trying to sweep this problem under the rug instead of actually doing something meaningful.

I feel so sorry to hear that there are still kids out there who are being bullied or exposed to things they shouldn't be online πŸ€•πŸ’” I think it's amazing that TikTok is taking steps to protect its younger users, even if their parents aren't always paying attention 😊. This new age verification tech sounds super effective and I love that users can appeal if something goes wrong - that's just common sense πŸ™Œ. I'm not surprised other social media platforms are following suit, we do need stricter regulations in place to keep our kids safe πŸš¨πŸ’».

I'm low-key relieved TikTok is taking steps to crack down on minors on their platform πŸ™. I mean, can you imagine being a teenager trying to navigate online content without some kinda parental gatekeeper to watch out for? It's wild how quickly things escalated from just worrying about cyberbullying to full-blown bans and limits 🀯.

But, at the same time, I'm also kinda skeptical about these new age verification tools πŸ€”. Like, can we trust that they're not gonna be too invasive or something? We already have enough creepiness in our online lives without TikTok adding more 😳. Still, it's better than nothing, and if it means keeping some 13-year-olds safe from sketchy content, then I'm down πŸ™Œ.

just heard about tiktok expanding their age verification tech πŸ€”... feel like we're getting closer to keeping our youth safe online πŸ’». gotta be honest tho, it's kinda scary how easy is for minors to get on these platforms in the first place πŸ™ˆ. anyways, i'm all for them taking steps to ensure user safety and all that jazz 😊. also, gotta wonder what other platforms like facebook are doing about this... feel like they're just sitting back and letting others do the work πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ. anywayz, hope this expanded tech helps keep our youngins safe online πŸ‘

πŸ€” I think it's about time we got our act together when it comes to protecting our kids online 🌎. I mean, 4.7 million accounts being removed in Australia is just crazy! Can't we just implement this tech across the board already? πŸ’» But at the same time, I'm all for giving users a chance to appeal if there's been an error made... it's all about finding that balance between safety and freedom 🀝. And let's be real, who doesn't love having an extra layer of security when it comes to our personal info? πŸ™Œ

πŸ€” TikTok's new system is a good start, I guess. It's about time they took steps to crack down on minors using their platform. But, come on, Australia already did it, and they didn't even make an example out of themselves πŸ™„. Still, at least they're exploring ways to improve the tech without just banning everything outright. The fact that users can appeal if they think an error's been made is a good touch too πŸ‘. Just hope it doesn't become some bureaucratic headache for people trying to stay online 😐.

OMG, can you even imagine how crazy it is that we need an age verification system for TikTok?! 🀯 I'm all about keeping the youth safe online, but this feels like a whole new level of scrutiny... Like, what's next? πŸ€” Social media companies are finally stepping up and taking responsibility for the content on their platforms. The facial age estimation tech by Yoti is pretty cool, btw! πŸ‘ But seriously, it's about time we prioritize the mental health and well-being of our young users. The fact that some countries are considering bans or limits on social media use for under-16s is a bit alarming... 🚨 Still, I'm hopeful that this tech will make a difference in keeping minors safe online. Fingers crossed that it doesn't feel like Big Brother watching our every move πŸ˜’

just hope tiktok gets it right this time 🀞, dont wanna be stuck with an account deleted by mistake tho 😩, but on the other hand, its better safe than sorry πŸ’―. also think its about time more ppl start takin action about kids online safety πŸ™, cant let them just chill on tiktok and instagram all day lol πŸ‘€

I'm low-key relieved that TikTok is taking steps to protect minors from themselves (lol, just kidding) on their platform πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ. I mean, we all want our kids to have fun online, but at what cost? It's crazy how quickly social media can take over your life, especially for teens.

I think it's a good move by TikTok to use AI-powered age verification, and adding human moderators is a great way to ensure accuracy 🀝. The fact that users have the option to appeal if an error has been made shows they're committed to fairness too πŸ‘.

It's also interesting to see other platforms like Meta exploring similar tech πŸ’». With Australia already implementing a ban on minors under 16, it's clear we need more regulation in this space 🚨. But hey, at least TikTok is stepping up and taking responsibility for their users' safety πŸ’ͺ
