Toyota has partnered with Pony.ai to manufacture robotaxis on a large scale for China's market, marking the first time the technology will be widely deployed across Tier 1 cities such as Beijing and Shanghai. According to the plan, more than 1,000 of these autonomous vehicles are expected to hit the roads this year.
The Pony.ai bZ4X is one of three vehicle models intended for commercial services in China, following two existing ride-hailing service models. The robotaxis will gradually integrate into Pony.ai's fleet as part of the company's goal to reach 3,000 vehicles by the end of 2026.
Toyota previously launched the non-autonomous bZ4X model last year, which is now available for public purchase. In contrast, Pony.ai's version is equipped with its Gen-7 autonomous driving system, featuring innovative features like automatic vehicle unlocking via Bluetooth and in-cabin voice interaction.
The company's partnership with Toyota comes as a significant development in the self-driving car industry, given that it was founded in 2016 and began testing and operating vehicles since then. In 2022, Pony.ai received permission from Beijing to offer self-driving services to the general public, marking an important milestone for the Chinese autonomous vehicle firm.
Currently headquartered in Silicon Valley with a US IPO filed in 2024, Pony.ai has positioned itself as a key player in the growing autonomous car market.
