Trump and Mamdani hope for positive relationship after ‘productive’ meeting

US President Donald Trump and New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani met at the White House on Friday, marking their first face-to-face discussion since Mamdani's election victory in November. The meeting was described as "productive" by both parties, with Trump praising Mamdani for his success in the mayoral race, which focused heavily on affordability and cost-of-living issues.

Contrary to past criticism from Trump, who once labelled Mamdani a "jihadist", the President acknowledged that their shared love for New York City served as a common ground. Mamdani's campaign had centered around addressing rent, utilities, and groceries costs, which resonated with voters in the city.

Mamdani, a self-described democratic socialist, has long been at odds with Trump's nativist stance on immigration. However, he expressed hope to work together despite their differences, stating that finding common ground was crucial for tackling pressing issues such as US involvement in foreign conflicts and reducing the cost of living.

Trump acknowledged Mamdani's commitment to addressing affordability crises, noting that a significant portion of New Yorkers are currently living below poverty levels. Trump's recent shift on highlighting Mamdani's stance on cost-of-living issues suggests a growing concern among voters about economic conditions.

In a remarkable turn of events, Trump seemed to soften his stance towards Mamdani, even going so far as to praise the mayoral-elect's ability to appeal to some of his own supporters. This marks a shift in Trump's rhetoric, as he has increasingly highlighted common ground with Mamdani and other progressive voices on issues such as affordability and foreign policy.

Ugh, this is just proof that even when you think the politicians are at each other's throats, they'll find a way to put on a united front for the cameras 📸. I mean, I'm all for finding common ground, but come on, Trump used to call Zohran Mamdani a "jihadist" like that was just a joke? 😂 It's not funny when it comes from someone with his track record.

And don't even get me started on the fact that Mamdani had to campaign on affordability and cost-of-living issues because Trump is basically telling him to do so 🤑. I'm all for addressing those problems, but shouldn't we be talking about real solutions instead of just using each other's rhetoric as a way to sound more progressive?

I guess what really gets my goat is that they're making it seem like this meeting was some kind of breakthrough, when in reality it's probably just Trump trying to shore up his image for the next election cycle 🤥. I'm not holding my breath until we see any real change.

🤔 just wondering if trump is really trying to find common ground or is this just another ploy to win over voters 🤑 mamdani seems like a solid candidate but i'm still skeptical about his chances of working with trump 🤝 anyways, it's good to see both parties acknowledging the affordability crisis in nyc 💸 gotta do something about that rising cost of living 👎

🤔 I gotta say, this meeting between Trump & Mamdani is kinda like, totally unexpected, you know? Like, Trump used to trash Mamdani, saying he was a jihadist, but now they're just chillin' at the White House, talkin' shop about affordability and stuff. And Mamdani's all cool with it, too, 'cause he knows they both love NY City, right? 🗽️ It's like, progress or somethin'. I guess Trump is tryin' to reach out to his base, but also show that he can work with people who don't just agree with him on everything. But for real, what does this mean for policy? Is this the start of a beautiful friendship or just another PR stunt? 🤷‍♂️

I'm low-key impressed that Trump finally acknowledged Zohran Mamdani's commitment to affordable housing 🤯🏠. It's about time he shifted his focus away from, like, totally misinformed xenophobic rhetoric and towards actual solutions. I mean, who doesn't want to see NYC become a place where everyone can afford a roof over their heads? 💸 Mamdani's all about that democratic socialism life, but Trump seeming to respect that is a major win for progressive voters 🙌. Now, if he could just put aside his nativist views on immigration...🤞 We need more of this bipartisan vibe! 👫

omg u gotta love how trump is trying 2 change his tune 🤯 mamdani is def bringing the heat on affordability & cost-of-living issues in nyc & its about time trump acknowledges it 🙌 like who wouldn't want to address people living below poverty levels? 🤷‍♂️ also i'm loving how mamdani is holding down his ground despite being a democratic socialist 🌟 he's not backing down from his stances on immigration or foreign policy, so props 2 him for that 💪

so nice to see trump finally figuring out that being a racist isn't gonna win him any votes 🙃 meanwhile mamdani's just trying to not get killed by the NYPD yet...anyway, it's cool that they found common ground over new york city love - maybe he'll actually do some good for the city instead of just tweeting about it 💸

🤔 I'm not sure what's going on here but I think it's kinda cool that Trump is trying to play nice with Zohran after all those years of drama. I mean, we've seen him go from calling someone a "jihadist" to actually praising their ability to connect with his base... it's like he's trying to win some kind of bet or something 😂. But for real though, it's good that they're talking about the issues that matter most to New Yorkers - affordability is killing us! 💸 I'm not sure if Mamdani's views on socialism will fly with everyone in NYC, but at least he's giving it a shot. Fingers crossed we see some real change come out of this meeting 🤞

aww yay this is so awesome!!! i love that they're finally having a face-to-face meeting after the election 😊💕 trump acknowledging mamdani's success on affordability issues is like, super cool 🤩 can't wait to see what kind of changes they'll work on together 💖

I'm loving this unexpected meeting 🤝! Did you know that NYC rent prices have increased by 43% since 2015? 😱 It's no wonder voters are talking about affordability. Meanwhile, Trump's approval ratings have been stuck at around 40% on immigration issues... pretty low considering his nativist stance 🚫. But hey, a shared love for the Big Apple is a great start! 👍 Mamdani's campaign did resonate with many NYC voters, especially those living below poverty levels - over 1 in 5 NYC residents struggle to make ends meet 🤯. Can't wait to see how they tackle cost-of-living issues together... stats show that NYC has one of the highest median household incomes in the US ($83k+), but it's getting harder for low- and moderate-income households to keep up 💸. What do you think about this shift in Trump's rhetoric? 🤔

I'm low-key surprised by this meetup between Trump and Zohran Mamdani 🤯. I thought for sure Trump would've kept up the hate speech from before, but instead he's giving Mamdani some props about tackling NYC's affordability issues 🤑. It's like Trump is trying to appeal to his base without alienating progressive voters too much - maybe he's finally realizing that "winning" means finding common ground with people who aren't exactly thrilled about him 😏. One thing's for sure, this meeting marks a shift in Trump's rhetoric and might just make things more interesting for the new mayor-elect 🤔.
