Trump calls on Senate Republicans to "Get rid of the Filibuster"

President Trump has called on Senate Republicans to "get rid of the filibuster", a long-standing tactic that allows Democrats to delay or block legislation, in order to bypass Democratic opposition and reopen the federal government.

In a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump stated that he had given this issue "great thought" during a flight back from Asia and declared that it was time for Republicans to take action. The filibuster requires 60 votes in a full Senate to overcome, but Trump's call suggests that he wants the Republican majority to be able to pass legislation without Democratic consent.

The move could significantly alter the way the Senate operates, with many fearing that it would undermine the balance of power and democratic processes. Senate Majority Leader John Thune has yet to comment on Trump's proposal.

As the government shutdown enters its 29th day, the impact is becoming increasingly evident across the US. From Alaskans stockpiling food for winter to Mainers struggling with home-heating oil subsidies, the effects of a shuttered federal government are hitting home.

While quiet talks are underway between bipartisan senators, it remains unclear if lawmakers will follow Trump's lead or continue to negotiate with Democrats. The shutdown is expected to have dire consequences, particularly for those relying on SNAP food aid and facing skyrocketing healthcare insurance costs.

Trump's call comes as he returns from a successful trip to Asia, where he met with Chinese leader Xi Jinping and secured a trade truce. However, his focus on the filibuster has raised eyebrows among lawmakers and experts, who question whether Trump is attempting to bypass democratic processes or find a genuine solution to the government shutdown impasse.

I'm so worried about this filibuster thingy 🀯... but at the same time, I kinda think it's cool that Trump's all fired up about fixing the problem 😊! Like, who doesn't love a good challenge? And can you imagine if they could actually get some stuff done? πŸ’ͺ It's just crazy how stuck we are right now in this government shutdown mess πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ... but I'm holding out hope that somehow, someway, things will turn around ✨. Maybe it's a chance for us to start thinking outside the box and come up with new solutions? Who knows, maybe this is just what we need – a shake-up! πŸŽ‰

I dont get why trump is pushing for this 60 vote thingy it feels like he wants to just do whatever he wants without anyone else agreeing with him... I mean i get that he wants to reopen the gov, but isnt there a way to work together w/ democrats instead of trying to change the rules? my kid would tell me to be more open-minded & listen 2 others opinions lol... its scary cuz if they do get rid of the filibuster it could really change how laws are made in this country πŸ€―πŸ’‘

Omg I'm low-key worried about this πŸ€”! If they really get rid of the filibuster, it could be a game-changer for our democracy πŸ’₯! On one hand, it's def worth exploring ways to move legislation forward when we're stuck in limbo 🚫. But on the other hand, I'm scared that Trump's trying to muscle his way into passing whatever he wants without anyone else having a say πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ #FilibusterFear

I mean, think about it... if they can just bypass Democratic opposition and reopen the government, it's like taking away the brakes on our system ⚑️! That could lead to some serious power imbalances πŸ“‰. I'm not sure what Trump's endgame is here, but I hope he's considering the bigger picture 🌐 #NotMyPresident #FilibusterFrenzy

I'm seeing a lot of anxiety about this whole Senate thing 🀯... I get why people are worried, but let's take a deep breath. We need to think about what's really at stake here - not just the filibuster itself, but how it affects everyday Americans who are feeling the pinch from this government shutdown 🀝.

I know Trump wants to find a solution, and I'm all for that! But let's make sure we're thinking about this in a way that's fair to everyone, not just Republicans. We need bipartisan solutions that work for people like Alaskans who need food aid or Mainers struggling with healthcare costs πŸ™.

It's also worth considering what the filibuster is even doing - allowing Democrats to hold up legislation? Is it really that broken? Maybe we can find a way to fix it, rather than just trying to get rid of it altogether πŸ’‘. Let's keep the conversation civil and focused on finding solutions that work for everyone πŸ€—.

lol can't believe trump is at it again trying to break the senate's rules πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ. i mean what's next, getting rid of the whole thing? 🚫 like seriously who thought it was a good idea to have one party control everything and just make deals with the other side? πŸ€‘. anyway this government shutdown is already having some pretty crazy effects, i'm low-key worried about all the people who rely on SNAP food aid πŸ€•. can we just get some real solutions for once instead of trying to game the system? πŸ˜’

πŸ€” just thinkin', if trump gets rid of the filibuster, does that mean no more checks and balances? that's some heavy stuff... might lead to a whole lotta power for one side... πŸ‘€ also wonder what's behind this move, is he really trying to bypass democratic processes or just trying to get his agenda thru ASAP? πŸ’Έ not sure i trust his intentions, tbh... πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

Ugh, this is gonna be a disaster... Like, seriously, can't they just talk to each other? πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ Trump's call for getting rid of the filibuster is like he thinks it's some kinda magic trick that'll make all the problems disappear. Newsflash: it won't. This move could ruin the balance of power and democratic processes in the Senate. And what about the impact on SNAP food aid and healthcare costs? It's just gonna get worse, not better. 🀯 I mean, Trump's already shown us he doesn't care about bipartisan talks or compromise... why would this be any different? πŸ˜’

man this is crazy 🀯 like trump's trying to take away our democratic rights just 'cause he can't get his way and now john thune's all quiet on it πŸ‘€ you gotta wonder what's really going on in that republican brain πŸ’ and have you seen the impact of this shutdown already? people are struggling to survive ❄️ food stockpiling, heating oil subsidies...it's like trump doesn't care about the American people πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ and now he's trying to ram through a solution without even listening to democrats πŸ—£οΈ newsflash trump: we don't need some 60-vote filibuster to fix our problems, we just need to work together 🀝

idk why trump's all over the place rn πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ. first he wants to shut down the gov altogether, then suddenly he's got some fancy plan to just ignore the filibuster lol what's next? is he gonna start making laws with a pen and paper like that? πŸ˜‚ also i'm worried about how this affects ppl who are struggling already gotta stock up on food for winter πŸ”πŸ‘Ž

man this whole thing is so messed up 🀯 the gov shutdown is getting super ugly with people struggling to pay bills and whatnot πŸ™ but at the same time i get why trump wants to change the filibuster rule, its like the gov's always playing these dirty tricks on each other anyway πŸ˜’ and if republicans can just pass laws without democrats having a say in it, that's gotta be better than this gridlock stuff right? πŸ€” plus trump just got back from asia and secured a trade truce so he must know what he's doing, lol πŸ˜‰

I'm getting worried about this whole government shutdown thing 🀯... I mean, can you imagine if your SNAP food aid gets delayed for months? It's not just about the money, it's about people struggling to put food on the table πŸ‘¨β€πŸ³... and it's all because of politics. Trump's idea to get rid of the filibuster seems like a bold move, but is it really gonna help or just make things worse? πŸ€” I've seen my grandma struggle with healthcare costs back home, and the thought of her having to pay more for meds is just heartbreaking ❀️... what if this shutdown leads to even more problems? I hope our lawmakers can put aside their differences and find a way forward that doesn't hurt the people who need it most 🀞

omg can you believe trump wants to just get rid of the filibuster like what even is the point of having a majority if u cant pass laws without democrats tho? πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ it's already so tense in washington, do we really need more drama?! meanwhile, people are struggling so hard due to this shutdown πŸ₯΅ SNAP food aid and healthcare insurance costs skyrocketing...it's just not right. senate majority leader john thune needs to come out and say something about this ASAP, like, what's up with that silence? πŸ€” anyway, i'm keeping my eyes on this situation, hoping for a bipartisan solution πŸ’• but honestly, trump's actions are making me super skeptical about his intentions πŸ€‘

omg you guys i just cant even think about what would happen if trump gets rid of the filibuster its like he thinks senate reps are just gonna magically agree with him on everything idk how he expects them to get anything done without having to compromise with democrats, plus it feels so undemocratic 🀯. i mean i know republicans are mad about the shutdown but cant they see that trump's solution is just gonna make things worse for everyone else, especially those struggling during this government shutdown...

omg, I'm literally freaking out over this 🀯 - if they get rid of the filibuster it's gonna be SO chaotic in the Senate πŸ˜‚. Like, what even is the point of having a majority if you can't pass anything without the other side? It's like trying to build a house on shaky ground... not stable at all 🏠πŸ’₯

πŸ€” I'm reading this now and I'm like what's next? We already have him tweeting crazy stuff on Truth Social πŸ“°. The thing is, he seems to want to just muscle his way through legislation without anyone getting in his face. Problem is, that doesn't sound like how democracy works. Like, I get it, people get frustrated when things drag on for ages, but this feels like a slippery slope. I mean, what's the point of even having a Senate if you can just do whatever and not have to work with anyone else? It sounds super powerful, but also kinda scary? 😬

πŸ€” This whole thing is super messed up, you know? A government shutdown for 29 days already... like, what's next? People are struggling just to get by - food aid and heating oil subsidies, it's real. πŸ²πŸ’‘ And now Trump is saying we need to get rid of the filibuster so Republicans can pass laws without Democrats even knowing about it? That sounds super undemocratic to me... 60 votes for a simple majority isn't enough when you're changing the rules like that? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ It's not just about getting stuff done, it's about doing it right. What if someone just wants to pass a law that hurts someone or something? No checks and balances? 😬

omg can't believe trump is still at this ... seems like he's more interested in proving a point than actually finding a way out of this shutdown 🀯 the gov is literally affecting people's lives - food, heat, healthcare... can't just sweep that under the rug. but what's up with the filibuster? never really understood how it works πŸ™„ and why would republicans want to get rid of it? sounds like they're gonna give trump exactly what he wants. i guess we'll see what happens when senate majority leader thune speaks up πŸ‘€

OMG, this is getting serious 🀯! I'm loving how passionate Trump is about changing the Senate rules, but can we talk about the bigger picture here? This filibuster thingy has been around for ages and it's not like it's a new concept πŸ˜‚. The question is, what's driving Trump to make such a drastic move now? Is it really just about passing legislation or is there more to it? I'm totally stoked that bipartisan talks are happening, though 🀝. We need some common sense and compromise in the Senate ASAP! With all these power struggles going on, I'm low-key worried about how this will affect everyday Americans πŸ’ΈπŸ . Can we please just get our government back up and running soon? 😩

man this whole thing just got me thinking about how fragile our system of checks and balances really is 🀯 ...like what if trump's idea catches on? wouldn't that be some crazy kind of Wild West situation where one side basically gets to write the rules? 🀠 it makes me wonder, what's the point of having a majority in senate if they can just override whatever opposition comes their way? doesn't that go against the whole purpose of democracy? πŸ€” and what about all the other times when republicans were on the opposite side, would they expect those votes to count for nothing too? it's like we're playing this game where everyone's just trying to outmaneuver each other, but who's really in control here? 😐
