Trump wants to build 250ft Washington DC arch that dwarfs Lincoln Memorial – report

US President Donald Trump is reportedly planning a 250ft-tall arch in Washington DC that could dwarf the iconic Lincoln Memorial. The proposed Independence Arch, as it's known, would be a striking addition to the nation's capital but has already raised concerns among architects and preservationists.

The arch, funded by leftover donations from a $400m White House ballroom project, is set to be constructed on a small plot of land near the Memorial Bridge over the Potomac River. Its height would far surpass that of Paris's 164ft-tall Arc de Triomphe, but would be less than half the size of St Louis's Gateway Arch.

Art critic Catesby Leigh, who initially proposed a smaller arch to commemorate the US's declaration of independence, expressed his dismay at Trump's plan. "I don't think an arch that large belongs there," he said. "If you're going to build an arch that big, you should build it in another part of town – and one possible site that comes to mind is Barney Circle."

The proposed arch would sit between the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery, potentially disrupting the somber atmosphere of Memorial Circle and obstructing pedestrians' views. John Haigh, chairperson of Benedictine College's architecture program, described the corridor as "very somber".

Despite initial concerns, Trump has reportedly considered more modest designs for the arch, but ultimately decided on the 250ft-tall model to commemorate the 250th anniversary of US independence in July.

The idea of a grand arch in Washington DC is not new, but Trump's vision for an enormous structure that dwarfs existing landmarks like the Lincoln Memorial raises eyebrows. The Commission of Fine Arts, which would oversee the project, includes Atlanta philanthropist and developer Rodney Mims Cook Jr as its president.

Critics argue that the absence of a triumphal arch in major cities like Washington DC is unusual, and that this proposal could reshape the nation's capital's skyline forever.

this just too much 🤯🏛️... like what kinda architecture is this? who lets a 250ft-tall arch just stand there? near the lincoln memorial it's supposed to be somber, but then this monstrosity shows up 😱 and ruins the vibe 🎨. some ppl say its for the 250th anniversary, but why do they need an arch that big? can't they just make a smaller one or something? 🤔 meanwhile, i kinda like barney circle idea lol, sounds cute 🌳

🤔 I'm not sure why Trump would wanna build somethin' so massive in such a sensitive spot near Arlington National Cemetery... it's gonna stick out like a sore thumb 🏛️. Don't get me wrong, it'd be an impressive structure, but somber atmosphere and all that... maybe they should just keep it smaller & more tasteful? The Commission of Fine Arts is the right org to have some say in this, at least 👍

Ugh, can you even imagine walking past that massive thing every day? 🤯 It'd be so distracting at Memorial Circle. And I get what Catesby Leigh is saying, an arch that big just doesn't feel right for there. Plus, think about all the other landmarks already in DC - it's like Trump wants to create his own mini-skyline. 📚 What if some of our art projects were supposed to be low-key?

I'm not sure I agree with Trump's plan for an arch that huge 🤯... it's gonna be massive! But at the same time, can you blame him? The idea of a grand arch in Washington DC is pretty cool 😎. The thing is, they gotta think about all the other things around it, like the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery. I mean, have you seen those spots? They're super somber 🤕. If Trump's gonna do this, he should at least consider what's around it, right? Maybe find a different spot for it... Barney Circle sounds kinda funny tho 😂.

🤔 I gotta say, 250ft-tall arch? That's just crazy talk! I mean, I get it, Trump wants to make a statement, but come on, it's gonna be like putting a skyscraper in the middle of DC 🌆. I can see why architects and preservationists are freaking out - it's like he's gonna ruin the whole vibe of the National Mall.

And you know what really gets me? The fact that this is just some random guy's idea, Donald Trump, who's got no artistic background whatsoever. I mean, Catesby Leigh had a great idea for a smaller arch, but did anyone listen to him? Nope 🤷‍♂️. And now we're gonna have this... thing... looming over the Lincoln Memorial, taking away from its grandeur.

I'm not sure what's more disturbing - the fact that Trump didn't consult with experts or care about preserving the historic architecture of DC. This whole project reeks of a vanity project gone wrong 💸.

man this whole thing just feels so extra 🤯 you got one guy with a big ego wanting to build this massive monstrosity in the middle of a super historic area what's next? is he gonna put a giant statue of himself on top of it too? 🤦‍♂️ and can't they see how it's gonna disrupt the whole vibe of memorial circle? i mean, i get it, it's supposed to be some kind of celebration but like come on, can't we just keep things simple for once? 250ft is already pretty massive, what's the point of going overboard? 🤔

🤔 what's next? build a giant Trump Tower out of Lincoln Memorial marble and call it "Make America Great Again"? 🏰😒 seriously though, 250ft tall arch in DC? seems like overkill to me, can't we just stick with something a little less, well, ostentatious for once? 🙃 the Commission of Fine Arts is gonna need some serious hand-holding on this one 😅 and what's up with Barney Circle being proposed as an alternative site? sounds like someone needs to take a step back from the design process 💡

I'm soooo confused about this proposed Independence Arch... 🤯 I mean, I get it, Trump wants to commemorate US independence, but come on! 250ft-tall? That's just too much for DC, if you ask me. It'll totally disrupt the vibe of Memorial Circle and block people's views of the Lincoln Memorial. Can't we just stick with something smaller and more tasteful? 🤷‍♂️ And what's with the location? Barney Circle? 😂 I don't think so! The Commission of Fine Arts should be careful not to mess up this iconic city's skyline. Let's hope they reconsider the design... 👎

🤔 just think about it, if we keep building stuff on top of our history landmarks, what will be left to remember? 🏛️ it's not just about Trump's ego, it's about preserving the essence of DC. I'd rather see some actual preservation work done than another grand monument that'll get lost in time... 💔

.. I'm thinkin' about this arch thingy... 250ft-tall, yeah? It's like, what does it really mean to commemorate independence, you know? Is it just about showin' off or is it somethin' more? The Lincoln Memorial's all about freedom and democracy, but an arch that big might just change the vibe of the whole area. Like, do we want our national symbol to be a giant metal stick in the ground? I dunno... 🤔

omg what is trump thinking 🤯 250ft-tall arch is like totally not needed tbh 🙅‍♂️ it would ruin the vibe of memorial circle and obstruct ppl's views 👀 plus it's not like they're lowkey trying to one-up paris with that arc de triomphe thing lol 🤣 catesby leigh has a legit point tho, maybe trump should've built it in barney circle 😂 but seriously can't believe he'd do this 250ft arch is just crazy talk 🚫

omg is this 250ft-tall arch thing for real?? i dont think it would even block my view from the westin hotel 🤯 cant they just make a normal sized arch or something? like what even is the point of making it that huge?? and isnt the lincoln memorial kinda like... iconic already lol, do we really need an even bigger monument now?? also, who is barney circle tho? 🤔

I gotta say, I'm getting some serious mixed vibes on this one 🤔. On one hand, an arch of that size would be a massive statement piece for the city - think of the Instagram potential! 😂 But, on the other hand, it's got to be considered in the context of its location and impact on the surrounding area.

I mean, can you really imagine some 250ft-tall monolith looming over Memorial Circle? 🌆 It would completely disrupt the somber atmosphere that I think is so important for a place like Arlington National Cemetery. And let's not forget about the views from the Lincoln Memorial - what if this thing blocks everyone's perspective of it?

And then there's the question of scale. This arch is literally going to be half the size of St Louis's Gateway Arch, which already stands at 630ft tall... 🤯 I get that Trump wants to commemorate the US's declaration of independence, but can't we find a way to do that without upstaging every other landmark in the city? 😕
