U.S. halts all immigration cases — including citizenship ceremonies — for nationals of 19 countries, internal guidance says

US Immigration Cases Halted for Nationals of 19 Countries Amid National Security Concerns

In a move that has sent shockwaves through the US immigration system, the Trump administration has halted all immigration cases filed by nationals of 19 countries, including citizenship ceremonies, according to internal government guidance. The decision is the latest in a series of restrictions imposed on immigrants from specific nations following last week's shooting of two National Guard members in Washington, D.C.

According to a memo posted by US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), the agency has directed employees to "stop final adjudication on all cases" involving individuals from Afghanistan, Myanmar, Chad, the Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen. This pause includes completing citizenship ceremonies for legal permanent residents from these countries who were on the cusp of becoming naturalized American citizens.

The suspension is an interim step while the administration develops further guidance on the vetting of affected immigrants, according to the memo. The move is part of a broader crackdown on immigration that was initiated by President Trump following the attack, which has included a pause on all asylum decisions and a review of green card cases involving immigrants from these countries.

The halt in immigration applications affects not just green card applicants but also those seeking citizenship, who typically must have been legal permanent residents for three or five years. The decision is being made despite concerns that it may lead to unintended consequences, such as delaying the naturalization process for eligible citizens.

"This hold includes all form types and making any final decisions (approvals, denials) as well as completing any oath ceremonies," said the guidance. "This pause will only be lifted when the USCIS director issues another memo."

The move has sparked criticism from immigration lawyers and experts, who argue that it is an unprecedented and sweeping restriction on immigrants from specific countries.

"We will take no chances when the future of our nation is at stake," said a spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security. "The Trump Administration is reviewing all immigration benefits granted by the Biden administration to aliens from Countries of Concern."

The halt in immigration cases has already led to reports that some clients' applications have been halted or canceled, including citizenship ceremonies.

"This is an unprecedented move by the Trump administration," said Michael Valverde, a former top USCIS official. "The difference is this is for a large group of individuals and in every category of immigration benefit."

As the situation continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how long the halt on immigration cases will last and what impact it will have on eligible citizens who are seeking naturalization.

can't believe whats happening with the US immigration system 🤯 they're just freezing all cases for 19 countries now, that's crazy! i mean, i get national security concerns and all, but this feels like a huge overreach to me. what's next? halting everything from these countries? it's not just about the people affected, it's also about the uncertainty and fear this is gonna spread among immigrants already living in the US 🤕

😬 I'm worried about these 19 countries being affected... like what's going on? One minute you're living in the US, paying taxes, and contributing to society, and the next, you're stopped from becoming a citizen 🤯. I get that national security is important, but isn't it just a bit extreme? Have they even thought about the people who have been through all the hoops already? And what's the vetting process going to look like anyway? It's always some kind of backdoor or blacklisting... 🚫💼

I'm all about the nuances here... 😊 You gotta wonder why they're making such a big deal out of these 19 countries. Are they really that high-risk? 🤔 It's like, okay, we get it, national security is important, but do we really need to halt immigration cases for entire nations? That's just gonna cause more problems in the long run... Like, what about all those people who've been waiting years for citizenship? 🤷‍♂️ They're not bad folks, just trying to contribute to society. It's like, can't we just take a step back and look at the bigger picture? 👀

🤔 This move by the US government is really puzzling me... I mean, I get that national security concerns are important, but halting all immigration cases for 19 countries seems like a pretty extreme measure 🚨. I'm worried about what this means for people who have already invested so much time and effort into their applications – they've been living in the US, paying taxes, and contributing to society... shouldn't that count for something? 💸

And let's be real, most of these countries are not even known for being a major security threat 🤷‍♀️. It feels like we're setting ourselves up for a slippery slope where we start turning away people based on their nationality rather than individual cases 🚫.

I also wonder what the long-term effects will be here... is this just a temporary measure to calm public concerns, or are they actually planning to implement some kind of permanent policy change? 💭 We need more transparency and accountability from our government officials – this kind of sweeping action should come with much more explanation 🤔.

🤔😬 just think about all these ppl from afghanistan 🇦🇫 iran 🇮🇷 libya 🇱🇾 somalia 🇸🇴 sudan 🇸🇩 eritrea 🇪🇷 haiti 🇭🇹 and others being stuck in limbo 🕰️😓 cuz of some shooting in DC 🏛️ what about all the ppl who've been living here for years 💯 just wanna be citizens & contribute to society 🤝 but i guess u can't let ur guard down 😴 when it comes 2 national security concerns 🚫🔒

🤔 idk about this move by trump admin 🙄 they're making life so hard for ppl trying to make a new life in usa... 19 countries affected? that's like, a lot of people! what's the real reason behind this decision? is it just about national security or is there something more to it? 🤷‍♀️ and btw, didn't we used to be a country that welcomes immigrants from all over the world? 🌎 now it feels like we're creating barriers instead of breaking them down 💔 i hope this doesn't affect ppl who have been waiting for years to become american citizens 🕰️

I'm literally shaking my head over here! 🤯 19 countries? What's next? China?! We need a reality check here folks! This is like, super unfair to immigrants who've been waiting for years to become American citizens. Have they done something wrong just because of their nationality? I don't think so... 🙄 It's always about national security, but what about the people affected by this ban? They're human beings too! We should be welcoming diversity, not creating more obstacles. This is a total overreach, in my opinion. The government needs to be more transparent and explain how these decisions are made. Where's the logic here?! 😡

omg I'm literally shocked by this news 🤯🌎 like what's next? gonna cancel green card holders too? 😱 these 19 countries got nothing to do with the shooting, it's just an excuse to slow down immigration and be super strict 🚫👮‍♂️. and what about all those ppl who are already in the process of becoming naturalized citizens? 🤷‍♀️ they're gonna get stuck forever now 🕰️. this is so not fair, especially when we gotta deal with actual issues like climate change & healthcare 🌡️💊. can't we just focus on helping people instead of creating more barriers 🚪.

OMG u guys!! 😱 so theres this new rule in usa where theyre halting all immigration cases 4 ppl from 19 diff countries... like afghanistan, myanmar, & libya 🤯 its cuz of national security concerns after some shooting incident in washington dc 💔 im not sure bout it tho... cant we just be more welcoming 2 ppl from all over the world? 😊 its kinda weird that theyre only targeting specific countries instead of doing it globally 🌎 i mean what about the legal permanent residents who were like on the cusp of getting citizenship? do they get to wait around forever? ⏰ sounds kinda harsh 🤕

The US is taking a super drastic measure by halting all immigration cases for 19 countries 🚨. I think this move is kinda worrying, especially since it affects people who've been living in the States for years and just want to become American citizens 💕. The fact that citizenship ceremonies are also being stopped is really inconvenient for those on the cusp of becoming naturalized Americans 🤯. It's all because of national security concerns following a shooting in D.C., but I wonder if it's gonna lead to more problems than it solves 🤔. Some lawyers and experts are saying this is an unprecedented restriction, and I think they might be right 😬.

🤔 the US govt is getting super paranoid about national security... like, okay i get it, there was a shooting in D.C. but does that mean we gotta pause all immigration from 19 countries? 😬 seems excessive to me. what's next? halting travel apps or something? 🚫 this is just gonna cause more problems for ppl who are already waiting to become citizens... 🤷‍♀️

just had to look up what's going on with all those countries... honestly dont get why they gotta single out afghanistan and eritrea like that 19 countries is a lot of people affected my cousin has family in somalia she was trying to get her green card but now she's stuck lol trump admin is at it again 🤦‍♂️

omg I'm literally worried about all these people stuck in limbo 🤯 this is such a tough situation for those waiting to become American citizens... I think the government should be more transparent about what's going on behind closed doors 💬 it's not fair to just halt everything without explaining why 🤔 I mean, I get that national security concerns are important but can't we find a way to balance safety with fairness? 🤝 let's keep our fingers crossed that things will get sorted out soon 🙏

🚨 This is getting crazy! The US government is basically saying that if you're from one of these 19 countries, you can just forget about becoming a citizen or even applying for a green card. It's like they're creating a whole new class system based on where you're from. 🤯 I'm worried about all the people who are already in the process and have been waiting years to become citizens. What's next? 😬

🤔 this seems really harsh to just freeze everyone from those countries without giving them a chance to explain themselves... like they're guilty until proven innocent? 🙄

and what about all the people who have been living in the US for years, paying taxes and contributing to society but can't even get a green card or citizenship? it's not fair to just suspend everything like this... 🤷‍♀️

🤔 I'm kinda worried about this new move... all these countries getting halted is super broad, you know? What's next? 🙅‍♂️ Are they gonna stop people from applying for green cards or visas altogether? It doesn't seem like a good idea to just halt everything without proper reasoning. 🤷‍♀️ And what about the people who are already in the process of becoming naturalized citizens? They're gonna be stuck waiting forever now? 😬 This isn't fair, not even close...

i'm so worried about these immigrants being affected by this new policy 🤕 it's like they're being punished for something they didn't even do - just because of where they come from! the fact that 19 countries are being targeted is crazy and it feels like there's a lot of xenophobia going on here. i mean, what if these people were coming to the US as refugees or asylum seekers? wouldn't that be a good thing for the country? 🤔

🤔 This is getting outta hand 🚨 they're basically gonna leave ppl stuck in limbo 4eva cuz of some shooting in D.C... like, what's the real threat here? 🤷‍♂️ I feel bad for all those people who were already in the process of becoming naturalized citizens 🙏 it's not like they did anything wrong... this is just another example of how crazy things can get when ppl get too scared 😬
