US Senate kills resolution that would have limited Trump action in Venezuela

The US Senate has rejected a war powers resolution aimed at limiting President Donald Trump's ability to take military action in Venezuela without Congressional approval. The vote, which was 50-50 with the tie-breaking vote cast by Senator JD Vance, marks a significant rebuke of Trump's actions in Venezuela, where troops had captured and detained deposed president NicolΓ‘s Maduro just days earlier.

In an effort to block Trump's plans, Senate Democrats, led by Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, pushed for the resolution, which would have required the President to seek advance approval from Congress before taking further action. However, five Republican senators - Josh Hawley of Missouri, Todd Young of Indiana, Rand Paul of Kentucky, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, and Susan Collins of Maine - switched sides after receiving assurances from Trump that there are no American troops in Venezuela.

Young and Hawley cited discussions with Secretary of State Marco Rubio as the basis for their decision, stating that they would seek Congressional approval before authorizing "major military operations". This move effectively killed the resolution, allowing Trump to continue his plans without the need for Congressional oversight.

The vote has been widely criticized by Democrats, who argue that it emboldens Trump's aggressive foreign policy and undermines Congress' authority. Tim Kaine, a Democrat from Virginia, vowed to file further resolutions to block Trump's actions, stating "They can run but they can't hide".

In response to the Republican senators' shift, Trump lashed out at them on social media, suggesting that they should not have been elected in the first place. The vote has also raised concerns about the erosion of Congressional oversight and the growing influence of the Executive Branch in foreign policy decisions.

The outcome highlights the deepening divide between Congress and the White House over issues like military intervention and executive authority. With tensions rising on Capitol Hill, it remains to be seen whether Trump's actions will continue to face opposition from lawmakers or if he will push forward with his plans.

I'm low-key freaking out about this 🀯. How can the Senate just let Trump do whatever he wants? Like, where's the checks and balances, bro? πŸ™„ I mean, I get it, 50-50 vote is a tough one to break, but still... It's like, you gotta have some backbone, some spine, you know? πŸ˜‚ And what's with these Reps who suddenly became interested in Congressional approval? πŸ€” They were like "sure, we'll do whatever Trump wants" and then suddenly they're all "hold my beer". 🚫 This whole thing just feels super sketchy to me...

I don’t usually comment but this whole situation is wild 🀯. Like, I get why the Republicans wanted to block the resolution, I really do, they think it’s a bad idea to have Congress telling Trump what to do in another country...but at the same time, it feels like Trump is just gonna keep on doing whatever he wants and then there's this huge mess 🀯. And that part with Rubio assuring them there are no troops in Venezuela? πŸ™„ I don’t think that’s exactly reassuring...it just seems like a bunch of politicians playing politics to me. Like, can we just have a straight up conversation about what we want to do instead of making deals behind closed doors πŸ’β€β™€οΈ?

You know, this whole thing got me thinking - power and responsibility go hand in hand. When you give someone a lot of authority, there's gotta be some checks in place to make sure they don't abuse it πŸ€”. Trump thought he could just do what he wanted with Venezuela without anyone stopping him, but the fact that five senators were willing to change their minds after talking to him shows that even in the face of strong leadership, there can still be pushback πŸ’‘.

It's like when you're making decisions at home - if your partner or family member wants something, it doesn't mean they're gonna get it just because they want it. There needs to be some discussion and compromise before a decision is made 🀝. That's what Congress should be doing here - having an open conversation about the pros and cons of Trump's actions and making sure everyone is on the same page πŸ“.

The thing that really got me, though, was Trump's response on social media. He couldn't even bring himself to apologize or acknowledge that maybe he was wrong about needing Congressional approval πŸ˜‚. That just shows how out of touch he is with reality - if you're so sure you're right, why can't you explain it to people and have a respectful conversation? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

I'm literally shaking rn 🀯... Can't believe those 5 Republican senators just saved Trump's bacon πŸ˜‚. Like what is going on?! They were all like "concerned about American troops in Venezuela" and now it's like they're just sycophants or something πŸ™„. And then the tie-breaking vote goes to JD Vance, who's literally a close friend of Trump's... this is getting weird 😳. I mean, I get it, Congress isn't perfect, but come on! Can't they at least try to do the right thing for once? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ It's like Trump is just getting away with murder and no one's stopping him πŸ’£.

ugh, this is so not what i wanted to hear πŸ€• but, you know, the silver lining here is that it kinda shows how passionate and committed our reps are on both sides of the aisle πŸ’¬ even though they're disagreeing on pretty major stuff, at least everyone's speaking up about their concerns... like, Tim Kaine's all about filing more resolutions to block Trump's plans - that's actually kinda awesome 🀩 maybe we'll see some real action soon? and let's be real, the fact that five reps switched sides after getting assurances from Rubio means there's still room for bipartisan compromise πŸ’‘ so yeah, it's not perfect, but i'm trying to stay optimistic about this whole situation 🌞

man this is wild 🀯 Trump just took a huge step away from congress and now the senate is basically letting him do whatever he wants in venezuela... like what's next? Are we gonna see troops on the ground or is this just a big show of force? i think it's super concerning that republicans were all for it at first but then switched sides after trump promised they wouldn't have to do anything πŸ€‘ some people are saying congress needs to take back control and pass more resolutions to block trumps plans, like tim kaine said, "they can run but they can't hide" πŸ˜‚ the real question is what's gonna happen now that this vote is in... will trumps actions face opposition or will he just push forward? πŸ€”

idk about trump's decision to get involved in venezuela tho... i mean, nicolΓ‘s maduro is already out and captured, what's the point of taking military action? πŸ€” it just seems like trump's trying to flex his muscles as a global leader, but really he's just gonna stir up more drama and chaos. anyway, this whole thing is super concerning for me... congress should definitely be calling the shots when it comes to foreign policy decisions, not just letting the president run wild πŸš«πŸ‘€

OMG, I'm shocked by this vote 🀯! It's like, super clear that Trump is getting away with some serious power plays here and it's not sitting well with the Dems πŸ™„. The fact that 5 Reps switched sides after talking to SecState Rubio just shows how divided Congress is right now πŸ˜’. And let's be real, this isn't even the first time Trump has pushed the boundaries of executive authority... what's next? πŸ€” It's like he's trying to test the limits and see how far he can go before someone puts a stop to it πŸ’ͺ. The irony is that some of these Reps are now saying they'll seek Congressional approval, but let's be real, Trump has already shown he's not afraid to take unilateral action πŸ‘Š.

πŸ€” I'm really disappointed in those 5 Republican senators who changed sides πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ. They basically gave Trump a free pass to do whatever he wants in Venezuela without any oversight πŸ‘Š. It's like they're saying that the President is above the law, which is super concerning 🀯.

And what's with Trump's tweetstorm about them? That's just unprofessional and petty πŸ™„. Can't we all just agree to disagree without taking it out on each other?

This whole thing just shows how polarized our country is right now πŸ’”. It's like the Senate can't even agree on whether or not to have a conversation with Trump before making a decision πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ.

I hope Democrats keep fighting for what they believe in and don't give up 😊. We need more of that positivity and less of this gridlock and partisanship πŸ’ͺ

I'm still trying to wrap my head around this one 🀯... It feels like we're watching a real-life game of chess, where each move is countered by the other side's response. The fact that those 5 Republican senators were convinced to switch sides because Trump promised them there are no American troops in Venezuela raises some serious questions about their priorities πŸ€‘.

And can we talk about how Trump lashed out on social media like a toddler having a meltdown? 😑 It's just not presidential behavior, you know?

But for real though, this vote is a huge deal. It shows that even in the face of opposition, Trump and his team are willing to do whatever it takes to get what they want. And at this rate, we might be seeing some pretty major changes in our foreign policy over the next few years... and I'm not sure if anyone's really ready for that πŸ’₯.

How about you? Do you think Congress has the power to hold Trump accountable on these issues, or is it too late now? πŸ€”

man I'm really disappointed in what just went down in the Senate πŸ€”...it feels like Trump is basically saying "I can do whatever I want and you're not gonna stop me" which is super worrying for me especially since Venezuela is already dealing with some major issues πŸ’Έ...the fact that those 5 senators just flipped sides because of a little assurance from Rubio is wild πŸ€‘ it's like they got bought out or something...and now we're left wondering what else Trump's gonna do without any oversight πŸ‘€ hopefully Democrats can come up with some more resolutions to block his plans and keep him in check πŸ’ͺ

🀯 I'm literally shaking just thinking about this... Trump thinks he can just do whatever he wants in Venezuela and not have to answer for it? Like, what even is the point of having a Senate anymore? πŸ˜‚ Those 5 Republicans who flipped sides are total traitors imo... like, what kind of senator does that? πŸ˜’ And now Trump's going after them on Twitter... typical. This whole thing just reeks of favoritism and corruption. I'm so done with this administration and their blatant disregard for democracy 🀒

πŸ€” I'm really concerned about this vote outcome... it feels like Congress is getting pushed around by the President's aggressive actions in Venezuela. The whole situation is just so worrying, especially with troops being detained and the President basically doing whatever he wants without oversight. It's not a good sign for our democracy if the Executive Branch is able to just do whatever they want without checks and balances. πŸ’” I hope more Senators come forward to speak out against this kind of thing, or else we'll be in serious trouble...

I'm kinda underwhelmed by this whole thing πŸ€”. I mean, the Senate is basically saying "Hey, we're not gonna stop you, Mr President" πŸ˜’. It's like they're giving him a free pass to do whatever he wants in Venezuela. And the fact that some Republican senators are more worried about their own seats than doing what's right for the country is just sad πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ.

I guess it's not surprising, though. We've seen this kind of thing before – politicians more interested in keeping their jobs than standing up for what they believe in. It's like they're all stuck in some kind of partisan quicksand 🌿.

Anyway, I'm just gonna keep an eye on this situation and see how it plays out πŸ“Š. It's not exactly reassuring to think that the White House is just going to keep pushing forward with whatever agenda they want without any checks and balances πŸ‘€.
