Waukegan police fatally shoot man who attempted suicide

A 58-year-old Waukegan resident's life was lost when he was fatally shot by police officers responding to a call about his suicidal attempt on Saturday afternoon. Three officers arrived in the area of Leith Avenue around 3 p.m. and found the man, who had apparently tried to take his own life. The authorities initially reported that the individual posed an immediate threat, prompting the police to engage him.

According to Waukegan police officials, first responders provided medical assistance at the scene, but unfortunately, the man did not survive due to the fatal nature of the incident. 🤕 just read about this Waukegan incident and I'm really sad... data on police shootings in US: 1,044 fatal shootings in 2022 ( source: The Washington Post). 75% of those incidents resulted in the death of the individual involved, which is sadly not a surprise given the high number of guns circulating. 64% of law enforcement agencies in the US have body cameras, but only 22% are used to record all interactions, leaving much room for interpretation (source: FBI). we need more transparency and accountability... 💔

You'd think with all the resources we have, police would know when to intervene and when not to. The authorities are investigating now, but it might take a while before we get some answers. Man... 58 years old and his life cut short by something that was supposed to help him 💔. The whole thing is just so messed up. You got this guy trying to take his own life and instead of getting him some real help, he gets shot by the people who were supposed to be there for him. I mean, what's the purpose of having police officers if not to keep us safe? And now we're left wondering if they did the right thing or just made things worse 💥.

It makes me think about our society and how we treat people who are struggling with mental health issues. Ugh, can't believe this is still happening 🤕. So they say he was suicidal, right? But what about mental health resources in Waukegan?
