What’s going on in metro Detroit this week (Nov. 5-11) - Detroit Metro Times

Metro Detroiters, get ready for a week of art, music, and history. Stacey MacLeod's black-and-white visual artwork will be on display in Motor City Brew's one-night-only exhibition, VANTA. The show takes its name from the "blackest black" coating known as Vantablack, reflecting MacLeod's fascination with light and dark contrast. From November 5th to 11th, experience the power of a composition that balances darkness with life.

On Wednesday, head to Motor City Brewing Works for an evening of music and art. Stacey MacLeod will showcase her new ink drawings, while local musician John Krautner performs tracks from his latest album Cinnamon Lake. Tickets are just $10.

Next up, the Collective is launching a jazz series featuring singer Sky Covington and November Fourth. The series kicks off with a three-night residency at The Collective on Detroit's west side. Catch Sky Covington and November Fourth performing live on Thursday, Nov. 6.

If you're looking for something different, check out the Mini Hip-Hop Museum's "In My Lifetime" pop-up. Explore interactive exhibits, art installations, and music while enjoying old-school hip-hop artifacts. The pop-up runs from Friday, Nov. 7 to Sunday, Nov. 9 at Spaces At Stix in Southfield.

The D Funk roller derby team is gearing up for its season opener against the Grand Prix Madonnas on Saturday, Nov. 8. Doors open at 4 p.m., and tickets start at $11.59.

On Friday, November Fourth will be singing alongside Sky Covington at The Collective's VIP Sneak Peek Soirée. Tickets are just two for $30.

Lastly, head to the Dossin Great Lakes Museum on Belle Isle for a look at the SS Edmund Fitzgerald shipwreck history. Admission is just $5 starting from Friday, Nov. 7.

Before all these events, check out John Krautner's latest album Cinnamon Lake and the Matthew Smith Group's new self-titled album available to purchase on vinyl at Motor City Brewing Works. Find more ideas for things to do in Metro Detroit by visiting metrotimes.com/AddEvent.

man this year is gonna be lit 🤩 but i gotta say, i'm a bit skeptical about the whole VANTA exhibition. i mean, it's cool that Stacey MacLeod is showcasing her artwork and all, but $10 for one night? might be a bit steep if you ask me 😐. on the other hand, i love the idea of the jazz series at The Collective - Sky Covington and November Fourth are always amazing live 🎵. and hey, the Mini Hip-Hop Museum's pop-up sounds like a fun way to spend the weekend with old-school hip-hop vibes 🔥. also, roller derby is so underrated - can't wait for the D Funk season opener 💪.

I'm really hyped about these events happening in Metro Detroit! 🤩 It's awesome that the community is coming together to celebrate art, music, and history. The VANTA exhibition sounds so cool with its "blackest black" coating inspiration - I love how Stacey MacLeod balances darkness with life through her visuals 💡.

And can't wait for the jazz series at The Collective! Sky Covington's voice is like butter, you know? 🍞 And the Mini Hip-Hop Museum pop-up sounds like a blast from the past - old-school hip-hop artifacts are always a treat for me. 🎶

I also love that the D Funk roller derby team is hosting their season opener - it's gonna be so much fun to watch them crush it on the track 🏆! And the SS Edmund Fitzgerald shipwreck history exhibit at the Dossin Great Lakes Museum sounds super interesting - we need more people talking about our local history, you feel? 🤓

Last but not least, John Krautner's album Cinnamon Lake is a great listen - it's like he took all these vibes and turned them into music 🎵. And the Matthew Smith Group's new self-titled album on vinyl is calling my name... gotta get that ASAP! 💖

I'm like totally stoked about VANTA, but you know what? It might just be a bunch of hype... I mean, who actually knows the meaning behind this "blackest black" stuff? Stacey MacLeod's artwork is pretty cool and all, but is it really that special? And $10 for music and art? That's kinda steep if you ask me 🤑. On the other hand, I love how Metro Detroit is always coming up with these awesome events... like, who wouldn't want to see Sky Covington perform live? But, wait a minute... aren't there gonna be more concerts or something afterwards? Like, isn't that just gonna get all crowded and stuff? 🤔

Man, have you ever noticed how art can be this thing that wraps around your soul like a warm hug? Like Stacey MacLeod's work, it's all about contrast - light and dark, life and death... it makes me think about how we need those opposites to find balance in our own lives. We can't just stay in one place, we gotta move, grow, and sometimes take risks. It's like that song "Cinnamon Lake" by John Krautner, it's all about finding your path and embracing the unknown 🌊💫

Ugh, another excuse for me to break out my wallet 🤣. I mean, who doesn't love overpriced tickets and mediocre art? But seriously, it sounds like there's something for everyone - from roller derby (because, why not?) to jazz and hip-hop. Stacey MacLeod's artwork does sound kinda cool, but I'll believe it when I see it 💁‍♀️. And that Vanta exhibit name is just... *sigh* "blackest black" coating, really? Give me a break. On the bright side, it's not like Metro Detroiters are going to have to choose between art and a social life - they can do both while dying of boredom 💀.

I'm so down for a week of art, music, and history in Metro Detroit! 🎨🎵📸 I love that Stacey MacLeod's artwork is inspired by light and dark contrast - it sounds like really cool stuff. And can't wait to check out John Krautner's new album Cinnamon Lake, gotta get my jazz on 🕺. The Mini Hip-Hop Museum's pop-up sounds like a lot of fun too, especially with all the old-school hip-hop artifacts. My kids are always fascinated by history, so they'd love exploring the SS Edmund Fitzgerald shipwreck - we'll have to add that to our list! 💡
