What’s going on in metro Detroit this week (Nov. 5-11) - Detroit Metro Times

Detroit's Metro Area Set to Sizzle This Week

A plethora of cultural events and activities are scheduled to take place across metro Detroit, leaving something for everyone. The first event on the agenda is a unique art exhibition featuring local artist Stacey MacLeod, who will showcase her striking black-and-white visual artwork at Motor City Brew's Wednesday Night Art Series.

MacLeod's art pieces delve into the intensity and balance of light and dark, blending gothic sophistication with elements of darkness and chaos. Her high-contrast drawings, characterized by strange shadows, crooked lines, and distorted forms, invite viewers to celebrate the power of her compositions.

Attendees can experience MacLeod's artwork from 7-10 p.m. on Wednesday, November 5th at Motor City Brewing Works.

In other cultural events, musician Matthew Smith will lead his group, The Matthew Smith Group, in a live performance accompanied by an opening set by John Krautner of The Go and Conspiracy of Owls. This marks the launch of their new album on vinyl, available for purchase at the event.

The show begins at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, November 6th at Trinosophes.

In a bid to revitalize Detroit's historic corners, The Collective has launched a new jazz series featuring singer Sky Covington and November Fourth. This marks an exciting addition to the city's vibrant arts scene as the Collective brings together musicians and small businesses to create something special.

The jazz residency kicks off with a three-night event on Thursday, November 6th-Saturday, November 8th at The Collective, with tickets available for $30 for two people.

Meanwhile, author Thomas Nelson will delve into the mysteries of the infamous SS Edmund Fitzgerald shipwreck as part of his book launch. Nelson's recently published book delves into the tragedy's aftermath and its effects on families to this day.

The event begins at 11 a.m. on Friday, November 7th at Dossin Great Lakes Museum on Belle Isle.

Detroit's Mini Hip-Hop Museum is set to make its mark with an engaging pop-up exhibition featuring interactive exhibits, art installations, and classic hip-hop memorabilia.

From Friday, November 7th-Sunday, November 9th, visitors can explore the "In My Lifetime" pop-up at Spaces At Stix in Southfield. Tickets start at $12.62.

Finally, Detroit Roller Derby is gearing up to kick off its 20-year anniversary with an epic match between D Funk and Grand Prix Madonnas on roller skates.

The season opener will take place at Masonic Temple on Saturday, November 8th, starting doors open at 4 p.m., with tickets available from $11.59-$22.19.

aww man, sounds like detroit is gonna be SO lit this week!!! 😍 i'm super excited for the art exhibition, stacey macleod's artwork looks so cool! and a live performance by matthew smith group? yes please! 🎸 also, the jazz residency at the collective sounds amazing...sky covington's voice is gonna be perfection. 🎶 can't wait to explore all these awesome events! 🤩

🎨 Detroit's about to get its cultural vibe on 🌆! It's dope that Motor City Brew's hosting a Wednesday Night Art Series, featuring Stacey MacLeod's striking black-and-white visual artwork. Her art pieces are all about light and dark, which is super thought-provoking. And, it's awesome that The Collective's jazz series is bringing together musicians and small businesses to create something special. 🎶

But, I gotta ask, what's the deal with all these events happening around the same time? It feels like Detroit's trying to be a cultural hub, but maybe they should pace themselves? 😅 Anyway, I'm hyped for the book launch about the SS Edmund Fitzgerald shipwreck – it sounds super interesting. And, who wouldn't want to check out the Mini Hip-Hop Museum pop-up exhibition? 🤯 It's cool that Detroit Roller Derby is celebrating its 20-year anniversary with a massive match... but, maybe they should consider getting some more spectators in? 😂

idk about all these events in detroit...like, cant they just have one thing goin on instead of everythin'?

art exhibition sounds cool i guess, but how many times can we see the same old dark and light stuff? gotta bring some new vibes to town

john krautner's music is meh, never been a fan. think he should try somethin different for once

sky covington's jazz series might be alright, but im not feelin the whole "revitalizin historic corners" thing...sounds like a bunch of corporate nonsense

🎨 I'm so excited for the events happening in metro Detroit this week! There's something for everyone - art, music, jazz, and even roller derby 🤸‍♀️. I love how The Collective is reviving historic corners with their new jazz series and author Thomas Nelson's book launch about the SS Edmund Fitzgerald shipwreck sounds really intriguing 🚢. And let's not forget the pop-up exhibitions at the Detroit Mini Hip-Hop Museum and Roller Derby - it's going to be a blast! 😄

Just hope more parents bring their little ones to some of these events 🤞. I love the idea of the Mini Hip-Hop Museum pop-up exhibition - kids would absolutely adore it! 🎉 And can't wait for the Detroit Roller Derby match, my kiddo is super into roller skating now 🚴‍♀️. Glad to see so many family-friendly activities happening in metro Detroit this week 💖

omg u guys i'm SO hyped for all these events in detroit this week!! first off stacey macleod's art exhibition is going to be insane - her art pieces are like a whole mood . and then there's the live music with Matthew Smith Group and John Krautner... can't wait to vibe out with some sick beats. but what i'm most excited for is the pop-up hip-hop museum ! who doesn't love throwbacks ? and the roller derby match on sunday sounds like so much fun ! tickets are only $11.59-$22.19? gotta get those!

Ugh, can't they just simplify the event ticketing system? I'm still fuming about how I got scammed into buying two people's worth of "The Collective" jazz residency tickets... meanwhile, I'm trying to figure out how much a single ticket costs. 🤦‍♂️ Ticketing fees are so high sometimes! And don't even get me started on the pop-up exhibition prices - $12.62 for entry? Are they kidding me?! I know it's supposed to be interactive and all, but come on, can't we just have more affordable options? 🤑

omg can't wait for the art exhibition 🎨🔥 stacey macleod's artwork sounds soooo cool! i'm a huge fan of art exhibitions and this one seems like it's gonna be lit 🤩 and that jazz series by the collective sounds amazing too 🎶💫 did u know detroit is having a mini hip-hop museum pop-up? 🤯 20 years of detroit roller derby sounds epic 😆 gotta cop those tickets ASAP 💰

Wow! Detroit's got some awesome stuff happening this week 🤩🎨. From art exhibits to live music and roller derby, it's a perfect combo for anyone looking for something new and exciting. And, you know, the SS Edmund Fitzgerald shipwreck book launch sounds super interesting too. I've always been fascinated by that part of history 😊.

🤔 so what's the big deal about detroit having all these events? like, can't they just pick one thing to do instead of tryna cram everything into this week 📅 and btw, isn't it weird that everyone's making a fuss over the edmund fitzgerald shipwreck again? feels like history repeats itself... 💔

man i'm low-key hyped for the art exhibition at Motor City Brews 🎨👀 stacey macleod's artwork sounds like it's gonna be straight fire, all that light and dark vibes is giving me major goth feel 🕷️🔪 anyway, i hope they got good seating cuz i don't wanna miss out on seeing those striking visuals in person 💻

This is gonna be a lit week in metro Detroit 🤩! I'm loving the lineup of events and activities that are poppin' up all over the city. From art exhibitions to jazz performances, and even a roller derby match – there's something for every kind of vibe-seeker out there.

I'm curious to check out Stacey MacLeod's art exhibition at Motor City Brew's Wednesday Night Art Series. Her artwork sounds super unique and thought-provoking 🎨. And can't wait to experience The Matthew Smith Group's live performance at Trinosophes – I've heard great things about their new album.

Also, I'm excited to see the mini hip-hop museum pop-up exhibition in Southfield. Hip-hop culture is such a big part of Detroit's history and identity 🎤. And on a more serious note, author Thomas Nelson's book launch about the SS Edmund Fitzgerald shipwreck sounds like a fascinating event – hope to learn some new stuff.

Only thing that's got me a bit confused is how they're handling the ticket prices for the roller derby match 🤑. $11.59-$22.19 seems a bit steep, even for an epic match like this.

😊 I'm so stoked for all the amazing events happening in Detroit this week! It's like the city is coming alive with art, music, and culture 🎨🎶💃. For me, it's all about experiencing the community and connecting with others through these shared passions... and it sounds like there's something for everyone 🤗. Stacey MacLeod's art exhibition is already giving me chills 💀, and I'm loving the idea of a jazz residency featuring Sky Covington 🎸. And can we talk about how awesome it is that Detroit is reviving its historic corners with these new initiatives? It's like the city is taking care of itself ❤️...

I'm loving the fact that Detroit's Metro Area is gonna sizzle this week 🎉💥 It just goes to show that even in economic downturns, cities can still find ways to revitalize themselves through art and culture. I mean, think about it, you've got a unique art exhibition, live music performances, jazz residency, book launch, pop-up exhibitions, and roller derby events all happening at the same time. It's like the city is trying to make up for lost time 😊.

But here's the thing, what does this say about our country's priorities? Are we valuing arts and culture over other things that might be more "productive"? I'm not saying Detroit needs to compete with Silicon Valley or anything, but it just makes you wonder. Is this a case of cities taking matters into their own hands because the government isn't doing enough? It's definitely making me think about the role of local governments in supporting their communities 🤔.

And let's not forget about accessibility. I mean, $12.62 for a pop-up exhibition might be a bit steep for some people. Can we talk about how to make these types of events more inclusive and affordable? Is this just another example of the class divide that's been growing in our country? Food for thought 🤔

⭐️ I'm actually really hyped for the pop-up exhibition at Detroit's Mini Hip-Hop Museum! It sounds like so much fun 🎉 They're gonna have interactive exhibits, art installations, and classic hip-hop memorabilia - what's not to love? The fact that it's a limited-time event only makes it more exciting 🕰️ I'm thinking of grabbing my squad and checking it out on the 8th or 9th. Has anyone else heard about this?

just saw that detroit is gettin some major love with all these awesome events comin up 🤩 got a lot of respect for the collective and motor city brews for hostin these cool art and music exhibitions, it's great to see the city comin alive like this 💡 but we gotta keep supportin local artists and creatives too, can't just rely on tourism for economic growth, need to uplift our own talent 🎨💪

OMG, it's gonna be a blast this week in Detroit 🤩! First off, I'm low-key hyped for the art exhibition featuring Stacey MacLeod's striking black-and-white visual artwork. Her gothic sophistication vibes are so on point 💀🎨. And can't wait to check out Matthew Smith's live performance with The Matthew Smith Group - Matthew's music is always fire 🔥!

And, wow, a jazz residency at The Collective? Sky Covington and November Fourth are gonna bring the house down 🌃💫. Also, I'm intrigued by Thomas Nelson's book launch about the SS Edmund Fitzgerald shipwreck... sounds like a real page-turner 📚. And, of course, who can resist a pop-up hip-hop museum? 🎸

But let's be real, the main event for me is the Detroit Roller Derby's 20-year anniversary match 🏆🤩! D Funk vs Grand Prix Madonnas on roller skates? Bring it on! 😂 Can't wait to see all these awesome events and more this week in Detroit 💥
