‘Where is justice for Krystal?’ Mom of cop asks after suing Chicago Police Department, partner who shot her

A grieving mother asks the ultimate question: where is justice for her daughter? After filing a wrongful death lawsuit against the Chicago Police Department and Officer Carlos Baker, who fatally shot his ex-girlfriend Krystal Rivera in June 2024, Yolanda Rivera voiced her frustration at a news conference.

Rivera's heart-wrenching words reflected her desire to see some accountability from the department and the officer involved. She is seeking answers on why her daughter was shot, how the police department handled the investigation, and what measures can be taken to prevent such tragedies in the future.

According to the lawsuit, Rivera dated Baker on and off for about two years but broke up with him after discovering he had a live-in girlfriend. Despite telling people within the police department about their relationship, they were allowed to continue working as partners, according to the suit.

Rivera had initially asked to be reassigned due to concerns about Baker's behavior, which ultimately led to his return as her partner on a specialized tactical team that has faced several controversies in recent years.

The shooting highlighted issues of accountability and the city's handling of violent incidents involving officers. Rivera's attorneys pointed out that Baker had an extensive record of disciplinary complaints, including an incident in 2022 where he was accused of accosting a woman at a bar and flashing his gun after she refused to date him.

In August, records show that Baker and another officer exchanged calls following a separate altercation with a female cop. The lack of accountability for such incidents has sparked concerns about the safety of women in Chicago, particularly when it comes to interactions with law enforcement officers.

Rivera's lawsuit is an attempt to bring justice and reform to the Chicago Police Department, ensuring that no family suffers as hers has suffered.

😕 This is just heartbreaking. The fact that Officer Baker was allowed to continue working alongside Yolanda's daughter despite her concerns about his behavior is disgusting 🤯. I mean, can you imagine if it were your sister or someone you care about who was in a similar situation? The lack of accountability for such incidents is alarming ⚠️. It's like the department is more interested in protecting its own than ensuring public safety 🚫. Rivera's daughter deserved better, and her family deserves justice 💔. This lawsuit is a crucial step towards holding the department and Baker accountable, and I hope it brings about real change 🔍.

🙏😩 this is so sad what happened 2 Krystal & her mom Yolanda deserves 2 get some answers 4 sure why her daughter got shot & how the police department handled it its not just about Krystal's life its bout all the other women who might be in similar situations & getting justice is gonna make a big diff 🚨💪

🚔💔 I'm so done with these cops thinking they're above the law. Like, what even is going on here? You got this dude Carlos Baker dating his ex, but he's still allowed to work with her because she told people about it? That doesn't add up at all. And now his partner gets to stay on a specialized team despite having a history of crazy behavior? No wonder there are so many incidents like this happening in Chicago... it's just a culture of enabling and covering each other's backs. We need real accountability, not just lip service to reform 🤬

Omg girl 🤣... I mean, I feel for her, she's been through so much pain & trauma already 😭. It's crazy how a breakup can lead to death, it's like, what even is that? 💀 Anywayz, I'm all about seein' justice done, especially when there's clear evidence of bad cops 🚔💪... like, Baker's got some major red flags, right? 🚨 His ex-GF says he's been harassin' women & flashin' his gun? That's some creepy stuff 😳. I hope Yolanda gets the answers she's lookin' for, 'cause let's be real, a mom's gotta know what happened to her baby 💕.

🚔😢 This case is a total breakdown – how can you have a cop work with his ex when it's against department policy? 🤷‍♂️ Baker's got a long list of complaints, but was anyone really held accountable? 💔 The city needs to step up and make changes to prevent this kind of tragedy from happening again. 👮‍♀️

😔 I feel so much for this grieving mom, Yolanda Rivera. The fact that her daughter Krystal was shot by a cop who had a history of disciplinary issues just doesn't add up. I mean, how many times do you have to be in trouble before they take your badge? 🤯 It's not fair to the public and it's especially not fair to victims' families like Yolanda's. We need to see real change happen within that department, not just a slap on the wrist for the officers who are supposed to be holding them accountable. 🚔💼

Umm... I feel so bad for her daughter 🤕... how old was she again? 22 or something? And why did the police let them work together after they broke up? Like, doesn't that seem weird to anyone? 😂 My friend's cousin works in law enforcement and they said there are all these rules in place to prevent stuff like this. But it sounds like they weren't followed in this case... anyway... I just wish her daughter was still here 🙏 and that the police department can get their act together... this whole thing is really sad 🤖

🤔 this whole thing sounds super fishy to me... like how did Baker get away with all these disciplinary complaints without getting fired or even suspended? 🙄 shouldn't the police department be more transparent about these incidents? I'd want to see some concrete evidence of what really went down between Rivera and Baker, not just a bunch of hearsay from people who know them. 📝

Also, what's with the 'on and off' relationship thing? Why didn't the police department just break up the two if they knew about it? It seems like there was some serious negligence on their part. 😬

I'm not saying Rivera isn't right to be upset, but I need more context and proof before I start jumping to conclusions 🤷‍♀️. Can we get some depositions or recordings from witnesses that actually saw what went down? 🎥

oh my goodness 😭 this is just heartbreaking 🤕 I can only imagine how Yolanda Rivera must be feeling right now 🙏 her daughter was taken away from her way too soon and it's just not fair 💔 the fact that Officer Baker had a history of problematic behavior yet he was still allowed to work with his ex 👀 and then get shot by her 😱 this is just unacceptable 🚫 we need to make sure that our law enforcement officers are held accountable for their actions, especially when it comes to harming or harassing innocent people 💪 let's hope Yolanda Rivera finds some sense of justice and peace in the near future 🤞

I'M SO SAD FOR KRISTAL RIVERA'S FAMILY!!! IT JUST DOESN'T SEEM RIGHT THAT OFFICER BAKER WAS ALLOWED TO CONTINUE WORKING WITH HER DESPITE HAVING A LIVE-IN GIRLFRIEND & BEHAVING DISCIPLINARY COMPLAINTS. WE NEED MORE TRANSPARENCY IN THE POLICE DEPARTMENT SO THESE KIND OF INCIDENTS DON'T HAPPEN AGAIN 🤯💔

omg u guys 🤯 i cant even imagine how hard it must be for yolanda rivera right now 🤕 she deserves so much justice & accountability from the chicago police department 💁‍♀️ especially considering officer baker had such a rough past with disciplinary complaints 😬 and now hes accused of accosting a woman at a bar & flashing his gun 🚫 its like he was never held accountable for his actions before this tragic incident 🕰️ ugh why cant we just learn from the mistakes of the past & make sure these kinds of tragedies dont happen again in the future 😔

🤯 I'm literally livid for this woman and her daughter Krystal! The fact that Officer Baker was able to continue working with his ex despite telling his colleagues about their toxic relationship is just mind-blowing 🙄. And now he's shot her? No way, it's just not right! 💔 What kind of system allows this to happen? A police department that's more worried about internal politics than protecting the public? I'm so fed up with all these examples of police brutality and the lack of accountability for those who commit them 🚫. This lawsuit is long overdue and I hope it sparks real change in Chicago. Justice for Krystal! 💪

I'm so sorry to hear about Krystal Rivera's tragic passing 😔. This whole situation just feels like a nightmare come true - she was shot by her ex-boyfriend who was supposed to be keeping her safe as a cop 🚔. It's unacceptable that he got away with so many disciplinary complaints and was still allowed to work on the same team as Krystal. And now his partner is suing him, it just seems like justice isn't being served here 💔. I do hope Yolanda Rivera gets some answers and that this lawsuit can bring about real change for the Chicago Police Department 🤞. We need to make sure that our law enforcement officers are held accountable for their actions and that we can trust them to keep us safe 👮‍♀️.

😔 Another case of a girl meeting an untimely demise at the hands (or rather, gun) of a cop who's apparently got some serious issues with his love life 🤦‍♂️👮‍♂️... like, what's up with that? It sounds like Baker was more interested in his side piece than keeping to the rules, and now someone's daughter is paying the price 💔. And yeah, it's super convenient how he got reassigned after Rivera spoke up about her concerns... I mean, who needs accountability when you've got a good lawyer and a strong family to back you up? 😒

can we get a break from all the PC talk for once? i mean dont get me wrong yolanda's daughter was shot by a cop who had way too many screws loose... but lets be real how hard is it to investigate your ex's new GF and kick them off the force lol what did she expect? this lady dated him on and off for 2 years and still thought they could just keep working together? maybe if she'd actually followed through with her request to get him reassigned we mightnt be having this conversation

🤕 this is just so messed up 🙅‍♀️, i cant even imagine how hard it must be for yolanda rivera to keep fighting for answers about what happened to her daughter krystal. its like the cops are just enabled and nothing ever changes 💔, i mean baker had all these red flags before but they still let him work with krystal on a specialized team 🚔. the lack of accountability is just staggering 💥 and now yolanda's trying to bring about change so no one else has to go through this 🌟💪, we gotta keep pushing for justice 💕 and make sure our cops are held accountable for their actions 👮‍♂️
