World Darts Championship: Gian van Veen and Rob Cross into second round but Ross Smith loses

Gian van Veen and Rob Cross book their places in the second round of the PDC World Championship, while Ross Smith suffers a surprise first-round exit. The European champion, Gian van Veen, secured his spot with a 3-1 win over Spain's Cristo Reyes, as he battled to victory in the first set before stepping up in the second, averaging 107, to go 2-0 up.

In contrast, Ross Smith's campaign came to an abrupt end as he lost to debutant Andreas Harrysson of Sweden with a scoreline of 3-2. The 12th seed missed six match darts in the fourth set and was made to pay as Harryson pressed on to win the deciding set by three legs to one.

Meanwhile, former champion Rob Cross cruised through his first-round match against Cor Dekker, winning 3-0 to safely book his place in the second round. The Englishman averaged just shy of 100 in racing to victory in the first set and dropped off in the second but still came through to win from two legs down.

The PDC World Championship continues tomorrow with a packed schedule of matches, including afternoon sessions at 12:30 GMT and evening sessions at 19:00 GMT.

omg i was so confused during that darts match... i mean, how can u miss 6 match darts? 😂 what's the strategy behind that? anyway, Gian van Veen is soo cool with his European title 🙌 and Rob Cross seems pretty chill too, i love how he just cruised through his match 🏠 but Ross Smith's exit was like, unexpected 🤔 i mean, Andreas Harrysson is all new to darts or smthn? what made him so good out of the blue? 🤷‍♂️

Just saw that Gian van Veen is on fire 🔥! He's got the European title under his belt already and now he's taking down opponents left and right. Ross Smith didn't stand a chance against Andreas Harrysson, what a shocker 🤯! Meanwhile, Rob Cross just cruised through to the next round, that's what I love about his game, so consistent 👍. Can't wait to see how the rest of the tournament plays out!

the pdc world championship is getting more interesting by the minute 🤔 i think gian van veen's victory over cristo reyes was a bit of a fluke, but he's definitely got the skills to make it far in the competition 👏 ross smith's loss to andreas harrysson was a shock, especially since smith is usually known for his consistency 🤷‍♂️ on the other hand, rob cross's 3-0 win over cor Dekker just showed how strong he is right now 💪 anyway, it's not all about individual players - the real question is who's gonna come out on top in the second round? 🤔 i'm keeping an eye on gian van veen to see if he can pull off another big win 😎

can u believe gian van veen is back on fire 🚀? his average was insane 107! i've been saying it for ages that the pdc world championship needs more swedish players like andreas harrysson, he's got some skills 😎.ross smith's exit though is a bit of a shock, i mean we all thought he'd make it further 🤔. anyway, rob cross just chillin' in the first round 🙄. tomorrow's gonna be a crazy day at the o2 arena! 💥

can't believe ross smith got knocked out by some swedish rookie 🤦‍♂️ and gian van veen's form is getting better with each round 😎 but what's up with the schedule? afternoon seshes @ 12:30 gmt are kinda weird for a morning person like me 😴

I don’t usually comment but I think Ross Smith got caught out by that young Swede Andreas Harrysson 🤯! He was so focused on beating Gian van Veen he lost his way against a debutant who was actually pretty good 😅. And what about Gian van Veen? Dude's averaging 107 darts, that's insane 💥! Not to mention Rob Cross, the English champ seems solid as ever 🔥. But gotta say, I'm loving this year’s PDC World Championship already 🎯
