Wuthering Heights review – too hot, too greedy adaptation guarantees bad dreams in the night

Wuthering Heights Review: A Fashionable, yet Flawed Adaptation

Emerald Fennell has taken the classic tale of Emily Brontë's Wuthering Heights and transformed it into a 20-page fashion shoot that prioritizes style over substance. The result is a film that promises much but ultimately delivers little.

At its core, this Wuthering Heights is less about the tumultuous love story between Cathy and Heathcliff and more about Fennell's own vision of what she thinks the audience wants to see on screen. Margot Robbie's portrayal of Cathy is particularly noteworthy, as her character's desires are showcased in a way that feels shallow and self-indulgent.

Heathcliff, played by Jacob Elordi, fares slightly better, but even his brooding intensity can't save this film from its overall sense of languor. Fennell's decision to omit certain key elements of the novel, such as the character of Hindley Earnshaw and the issue of Heathcliff's dark skin, only serves to highlight the film's lack of attention to detail.

One of the most striking aspects of this Wuthering Heights is its tone, which veers wildly from campy humor to pseudo-romantic sentimentality. The result feels like a 136-minute music video, with Fennell relying on Baz Luhrmann-esque style over substance.

While there are moments where this film comes close to capturing the passion and intensity of Cathy and Heathcliff's love story, they are ultimately fleeting and insufficient to save this film from its overall sense of emptiness. Ultimately, Wuthering Heights feels like a luxurious pose of unserious abandon, a shallow imitation of real emotion that leaves the audience feeling unsatisfied.

I don’t usually comment but I felt really underwhelmed by this adaptation 🤔. I mean, Wuthering Heights is such an iconic story and it's been done in so many different ways before. But this one just felt like a bunch of pretty pictures strung together without any real substance or depth. Margot Robbie was definitely the highlight for me, her performance as Cathy had some serious edge to it 💁‍♀️. But overall I think Emerald Fennell lost sight of what makes the story so compelling in the first place 📚. The pacing was all over the place and there were some plot points that just felt like they didn't fit with everything else. It's a shame because it had potential, but I guess you can never please everyone 😐.

idk why ppl need a 'film' adaptation of wuthering heights, cant they just watch the book or see the 1992 one with jim broadbent 😒 anyways emerald fennell's style over substance is def a thing now lol but seriously what happened to substance? and margot robbie's cathy is so extra 🙄 jacob elordi can't save this movie from its own problems, bro. and can we talk about the lack of heathcliff's skin tone in the film? like, how did they even cast him? 😂

🤷‍♀️ honestly i think emerald fennell's vision is way too pretentious lol she thinks she's making some deep statement about fashion and style but really she's just showing off her own ego 👜 it's like she took a classic book and turned it into a catwalk, who cares about cathys desires when the clothes are already giving me LIFE 💁‍♀️ jacob elordi can do better than that though, he deserved more screen time 😒

I gotta say, I was really looking forward to seeing this Wuthering Heights adaptation, but unfortunately, it didn't quite live up to my expectations 🤔 The fashion aspect is definitely eye-catching, but sometimes I felt like they were more focused on aesthetics than actually telling the story that Emily Brontë wrote. Margot Robbie's performance as Cathy was pretty meh to me - I mean, I get what they were going for with her character's desires and all, but it just didn't feel super authentic 🤷‍♀️ Jacob Elordi did okay as Heathcliff, though! 🤞 I'm a bit surprised they left out some of the important characters and plot points, too... like, what happened to Hindley? It felt like they were trying to make this whole pseudo-romantic vibe thing work, but it just ended up feeling kinda shallow 💁‍♀️

I feel like I've seen better adaptations of classic novels in my favorite guilty pleasure rom-coms 🤣📺. The lack of attention to detail is super glaring, especially with Heathcliff's character being whitewashed. And don't even get me started on the tone - it's like they're trying to be campy and pseudo-romantic at the same time 🎉😒. Margot Robbie's Cathy might've been pretty in this film, but her character felt so... shallow? 😐 Still, I do think Jacob Elordi had some good brooding intensity going on 💔. Overall, it feels like they were more focused on making the film look Instagrammable than actually telling a meaningful story 📸💅.

🤔 I'm kinda disappointed in this adaptation, you know? I mean, I love Wuthering Heights as a book, but watching it on screen felt like looking at a super stylish Instagram post - all the pretty pictures, but no real depth or substance 📸💁‍♀️. I think Margot Robbie's character, Cathy, was really wasted in that role... she deserved so much more than just being shown off as this shallow, self-indulgent person 😒. And don't even get me started on the omissions - like, what happened to Hindley Earnshaw? 🤷‍♀️ It felt like Fennell just phoned it in and went for style over substance... not impressed 👎

I'm so over this adaptation thing... 🤦‍♀️ I mean, I love the original novel as much as the next person, but this one just felt like a glossy photoshoot on steroids. The focus was all on Margot Robbie's hair and outfits (no shame to her, btw 😉), and it totally overshadowed the story we were supposed to be invested in. And don't even get me started on Jacob Elordi's portrayal of Heathcliff - he had some serious chemistry with Robbie, but even that couldn't make up for the lack of depth elsewhere. The film felt like a tease, you know? It'd build up to something emotional and then just... drop it 🎉. I wanted more substance, more complexity, more humanity. But hey, at least the costumes were fire 🔥

I just watched this new adaptation of Wuthering Heights 🙄👀 and honestly I was really disappointed. The film seemed to focus more on looks than actually telling the story. Margot Robbie's character, Cathy, felt kinda superficial at times - you'd think her feelings would be way deeper given the novel 🤷‍♀️. And what's with Jacob Elordi as Heathcliff? He tried his best but it wasn't enough to save the film from being all meh 😐. I also noticed they left out some key parts of the book... like why Heathcliff had dark skin - that was weird 🤔. The tone kept switching between funny and sappy, which didn't really work for me. It felt like a 2-hour music video instead of an actual movie 🎥. Overall, I'd say this Wuthering Heights adaptation was just okay - not bad, but definitely not great 😐

I'm so disappointed in this movie adaptation, it's like they took all the passion and intensity of the book and replaced it with some fancy fashion shots 🤷‍♀️💁‍♀️. I mean, Margot Robbie as Cathy is kinda cool, but her character feels so shallow and self-indulgent - where's the depth? 😒 And don't even get me started on how they left out those important parts from the book... it's like they didn't care about the actual story 🙄. I just want a movie that can capture the complexity of Heathcliff and Cathy's love, you know? 💔 It feels like this one is more about looking pretty than actually telling a good story 📸💅. Maybe if they had focused on the characters and their emotions instead of all the flash and drama... 😔

omg u guys i just watched wuthering heights with my bffs and honestly it was such a letdown 🤯 i mean emerald fennell's vision is all over the place - she prioritizes style but forgets about the actual story 📚👗 margot robbie's cathy is so shallow, like what even is her motivation? 🤔 and don't even get me started on heathcliff's character development... it's like jacob elordi just phoned it in 😴 anyway i was expecting more from the film but all i got was a bunch of pretty outfits and some emo music 🎶👗

idk about this new adaptation of wuthering heights 🤷‍♀️ they tried to make it all about style but it just felt so superficial lol i mean margot robbie as cathy was meh her charactir's desiers were shown in a way that felt shallow and self-indulgent 🙅‍♂️ jacob elordi as heathcliff was kinda better but even his brooding intensity couldn't save this film from feeling like it was stuck in a rut. the fact that they omitted some key elements of the novel just made me wanna scream 🤯 and don't even get me started on the tone it was all over the place like a 136-min music video 😴 i mean baz luhrmann's style is cool and all but substance > style, duh 💁‍♀️

I'm really disappointed with this adaptation of Wuthering Heights 🤔. I mean, I love Emily Brontë's classic novel, but this film just didn't live up to my expectations 📚. They focused too much on making it look pretty and not enough on the actual story 😐. Margot Robbie was actually really good as Cathy, but even she couldn't carry that weak script 💁‍♀️. And can we talk about how they left out Heathcliff's backstory? Like, what happened to his skin tone in the end? 🤷‍♂️ It felt like a rushed, shallow attempt at artistry 🎨. I wanted to feel something real and raw with this film, but it just came across as pretentious and boring 😴.

OMG I just saw this review of Wuthering Heights and I'm kinda torn... on one hand I love Margot Robbie's style and she was soooo cute as Cathy 🤩👗 but omg the film feels like it's missing the depth of the novel like, where's Hindley Earnshaw? 😕 and Heathcliff's skin tone thing is just not cool 👎 Jacob Elordi did a great job though! 💪 the only good thing I can say about this film is that Emerald Fennell's style is LIVING its best life 💃🏻 but overall it feels like a fashion show rather than a real movie 📺💁‍♀️

I don't get why they're being so harsh on Emerald Fennell 🤔. She's definitely taking some risks with this adaptation, and I think it's cool that she's putting her own spin on the classic tale 😊. But maybe the problem is that Wuthering Heights is a pretty complex novel - it's not just about the love story between Cathy and Heathcliff, it's also about class, family dynamics, and the trauma of their pasts 📚.

I do think Margot Robbie shines in her role as Cathy, but I feel like Jacob Elordi gets kind of shortchanged with his character development 😐. And yeah, some of those omissions are pretty jarring - who thought it was a good idea to gloss over Heathcliff's skin issues? 🤷‍♀️.

But overall, I think Fennell's vision is still worth watching, even if it doesn't entirely work for me 💡. Maybe next time she'll find that perfect balance between style and substance 😉

I just watched Wuthering Heights and I'm still trying to figure out what happened 🤔. The fashion stuff was really cool, but I didn't get why they left out some parts from the book 📚. And Margot Robbie's character seemed so different from the book Cathy... did they do something weird to her hair? 😂. Also, Jacob Elordi looked really handsome as Heathcliff 🤩, but I didn't feel like I was feeling any real emotions during the whole movie 🎥. Did anyone else notice that it felt like a music video at times? 🎶

I mean, I was really hyped for this movie adaptation of Wuthering Heights 🤩 but honestly, it kinda fell flat for me 😐. Emerald Fennell's direction is all over the place, like she's trying to make a fashion statement on screen instead of actually telling a compelling story 🚶‍♀️. Margot Robbie's Cathy is super pretty but her character feels so shallow and self-absorbed... I mean, what happened to that strong-willed girl from the novel? 😔 And don't even get me started on Heathcliff's "acting" skills 🤣, like Jacob Elordi can't convey any real emotion. Fennell's decisions to cut key characters and plot points are just lazy 🤦‍♀️. The whole thing feels like a big ol' fashion magazine spread with zero substance 💄. I wish she would've stuck to the novel's tone and emotions instead of trying to create this weird, campy vibe 🔥.

I'm so over these overly dramatic fashion shoots masquerading as films 🙄. The fact that they're more concerned with looks than actual storytelling is just lazy. And don't even get me started on how they butchered key elements of the book 🤦‍♀️. I mean, what's up with skipping Hindley Earnshaw altogether? It's like they didn't even care about getting it right. The tone in this one was all over the place too - one minute it's campy humor, the next it's sappy romance 😒. And Margot Robbie's portrayal of Cathy felt really shallow to me 🤷‍♀️. I just don't get why they can't balance style with substance 💁‍♀️.

I MEANT TO SAY THIS FILM IS LIKE A SUPER PRETTY PICTURE BUT IT DOESNT REALLY GET UNDER YOUR SKIN YOU KNOW? EMERALD FENNEL'S STYLE IS ON POINT BUT IT FEELS LIKE SHE TOOK EVERYTHING THAT WAS COOL ABOUT WUTHERING HEIGHTS AND JUST DROPPED ALL THE DEPTH. MARGOT ROBBIE'S CATHY IS SUPER VIBRANT BUT ALSO KIND OF SOULLESS, AND HEATHCLIFF JUST LOOKS LIKE HE'S GOING THROUGH THE MOTIONS 🤷‍♀️👗 I GUESS IF YOU JUST WANT TO SEE A BEAUTIFUL FASHION FILM WITH SOME OKAY ROMANCE THINGS THEN THIS IS IT BUT FOR ME, IT FEELS LIKE MISSED OPPORTUNITY

I gotta say, I was really hyped for this adaptation 🤔, but it's def fell flat for me. I mean, Margot Robbie as Cathy is gorgeous, no doubt about it 👀, but her character feels so... surface-level, you know? Like, where's the depth? The complexity? It's all just a bit too 'Instagram aesthetic' for me 📸. And don't even get me started on Jacob Elordi's Heathcliff - brooding intensity is cool and all, but it can't save this film from its overall lack of substance 🤦‍♂️. What really bugs me, though, is how they glossed over some major plot points... I mean, Hindley Earnshaw? No thanks! That's like omitting a whole layer of the cake 🍰. Anyways, I think Fennell's style over substance vibe just didn't pay off for this adaptation... what do you guys think? 🤔
