Yemen’s Houthis release 9 mariners held since July ship attack

Yemen's Houthi Rebels Release 9 Filipino Mariners Held Since July Ship Attack

The Yemen-based rebel group, known for its targeting of ships in the region, has released nine Filipino mariners who had been held captive since a July attack on a cargo ship in the Red Sea. The mariners were being flown to Oman on Wednesday when they were intercepted by the Houthis.

Oman did not immediately acknowledge the release, but a Royal Oman Air Force jet landed earlier at the Yemeni capital Sanaa, followed by the departure of the plane from Yemeni airspace after the Houthi announcement.

The Philippines described the mariners as being "held hostage" by the Houthis since the July attack on Liberian-flagged bulk carrier Eternity C. The vessel was sunk during the incident and left at least four dead, with 11 people reported missing.

Since then, the Houthis have targeted ships in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, sinking four vessels and killing at least nine mariners. They claim that they released six of the men on Wednesday via their Al Masirah TV news channel.

It's unclear why the Houthis decided to release the Filipino seamen now, as the rebel group had previously held sailors captive for extended periods.

In a related development, the current Gaza ceasefire saw the Houthis hold fire, with the rebels having stopped their attacks on ships in the region earlier this year before again beginning them after the US President declared a truce had been reached.

🤞 Just got some good news 🌟 about those Filipino mariners! 🇵🇭 They've finally been released from captivity by the Houthis 😌. It's not clear why they decided to let them go now, but hopefully it means more calm in the Red Sea ⛅️. The Philippines has been really worried about their sailors being held hostage for months 🕰️. I'm just glad no one else got hurt during the ship attack 🚢💔. Now let's all celebrate with some joyful emojis 🎉👏💪!

omg did u know that the longest flight from manila to singapore takes like 9 hours lol and i just realized that's how long the mariners were stuck with the houthis 🤯 u think they're still shaking off the experience when they finally got out? anyway, have u tried those new pao buns at the mall food court? 🍴 i swear, they're soooo good! 😋

omg I'm so relieved to hear that the Filipino mariners are finally free 🙏🌟 they must have been living in such stress for months not knowing when or if they would be released I feel bad for the other sailors who were sunk during the attack it's just heartbreaking 😔 and what's even more confusing is why the Houthis decided to release them now? was there some kind of deal made or did they just get tired of holding them captive? 🤔 either way, let's just be happy that these guys are finally going home and can see their loved ones again 👪🏼🌎

I'm not buying the whole " humanitarian gesture" thing from the Houthis here 🙄. I mean, sure, releasing 9 Filipino mariners is a good PR move, but what's really driving their decision to let these guys go? Is it just a clever distraction from their ongoing naval blockade of Yemeni ports? 😏

And let's not forget, this comes at a time when the US President is trying to broker a ceasefire in Gaza. It's clear that the Houthis are playing both sides against each other here, using the Filipino mariners as leverage to keep the international community on their toes. 🤔

Meanwhile, our own government is too busy negotiating with the Houthis on the back burner while we focus on supporting our allies in the region. Can't they see that the Houthis are just trying to maintain control and manipulate the system? 💡

Houthis release 9 Filipinos, but still holding onto freedom like a bad habit 🤪

Why did they wait till now to let them go? Guess you could say they were just "dredging up" their humanity 😒

Can't help but feel for those 11 missing mariners, still out there somewhere 🌊

So bloody ridiculous that these rebels are still holding people for ransom... I mean, hostage 🤯 Like, what's the point of keeping people captive for years on end? Is it just to make some kind of twisted statement or attention-seeker thing going on? I feel so sorry for the Filipino families who've been waiting this long to find out if their loved ones are still alive. And can you imagine being stuck in that situation, with no way out and no idea when you'll be released? It's just heartbreaking 🤕

🤔 what's up with these houthis and their hostage takers mentality? I mean, they just let go of 9 ppl who were being held for over 5 months 🕰️, why now? was it something the phils sent them or maybe they realized they're not getting any $$$ from 'em 😂. And another thing, what's good with these ships in the red sea just sitting ducks waiting to be attacked 💥

🚢 OMG u guys!! So I just heard from my source (can't reveal who lol) that the Philippines is super relieved about the release of those Filipino mariners! Apparently, they've been held captive for ages and it's been a nightmare for their families back home 🤕. The Houthis must be thinking of a PR stunt or something 'cause there was no clear reason why they decided to let them go now 🤑. And can we talk about how weird it is that Oman just played along with the whole thing? Like, did they get some kinda deal with the Houthis? 🤫 I'm definitely going to keep an eye on this situation and see if there's more to the story than meets the eye 🔍.

I'm not surprised that the Houthis are finally releasing these Filipino mariners, but 9 people is still a big deal 🤔. It's like they're trying to send a message or something. I mean, why now? Was it just a random decision to release them before the plane flew out of Yemeni airspace? Or was it a negotiating tactic? 🕰️

I'm also wondering what kind of conditions did these men have to endure while being held captive. I mean, we know they were being held by the Houthis since July, but how long exactly? Were they treated fairly or was it just another way for the rebels to get attention? 🤷‍♂️

It's also interesting that this release comes after a ceasefire in Gaza. Are we seeing a shift in their strategy now? Or is this just a small victory for the Philippines and the international community? 🌎

I'm so relieved that those 9 Filipino mariners are finally free 🙏🌟. It's crazy to think they'd been held captive for almost 6 months by the Houthis 😱. I mean, can you even imagine being stuck in a situation like that? The Philippines must be overjoyed too - it's like a weight has been lifted off their shoulders 💪.

I'm not sure why the Houthis decided to release them now, but honestly who cares about the politics behind it? 🤷‍♂️ Let's just focus on the good stuff! Those mariners are getting out alive and that's all that matters ❤️. And can we talk about how crazy this whole situation is in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden? It's like a real-life video game or something 😲.

😊 just read about these 9 Filipino mariners being released by Houthi Rebels 🚢💨 it's crazy to think they were held captive since july last year 🤯 i mean, what made the Houthis change their mind now? 🤔 was it a deal with oman or maybe some other party involved? 🤑 but glad these guys are finally free 💥 hope they can go back to living their lives without all this drama 😩

🚢👍 Good news finally! Those Filipino mariners were stuck for ages, it's sickening to think of them being held hostage 🤯. I'm glad Oman stepped in and helped facilitate their release 💨. As for the Houthis, I don't get why they decided to let go now, seems like they were just messing with people's lives 😒. Anyways, at least no more lives lost... I guess 🙏. What do you think about this turn of events?

omg what's up with these houthi rebels? one minute they're attacking ships left and right, next thing you know they're releasing the Filipino mariners holding them captive 🤯 i mean, i get that tensions are high but can't they just chill for a sec? it feels like they're trying to make some kinda point or something. and now they're already going back to their ship-attacking ways... what's the dealio? 🚣‍♀️

🤔 What's up with these Houthi rebels and their ship attacks? First they're holding people hostage, now they just decide to release 'em without no explanation... like they're just doing us a solid out of the blue 🙄. The Philippines is already dealing with a lot of stuff in that region, this gotta be some kinda stress relief for them 🤞. On the other hand, it's good to see the ceasefire in Gaza and all, but you'd think the Houthis would've stuck to their word by now 😒. Guess we'll just have to wait and see what's next with these rebels...

Ugh, can't believe those Houthi Rebels are still holding people hostage! 🤯 I mean, what's up with that? One day they're releasing some Filipinos, next thing you know they'll be back to their old tricks, targeting ships in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. It's like, don't they have anything better to do than hold sailors captive for months on end? 🙄 And what's with the lack of acknowledgement from Oman, are they just letting this one slide? 🤔 The Philippines is all over it though, saying those mariners were "held hostage"... I get it, but can't we have a peaceful resolution to these conflicts without having to resort to drama like this? 🤷‍♀️

Just read about those 9 Filipino mariners being released by Houthi Rebels 🚢🌟 finally! It's a good thing, right? I mean, they'd been held captive for months and this is what happened... 😐 It's all pretty confusing why they decided to release them now though. The Houthis could've just kept 'em as hostages forever like they did with those other sailors 🤷‍♂️. But I guess it shows they can be negotiated with, who knows? Oman dropping the plane and then picking up their people is also an interesting move... maybe there's some kind of bigger deal going on here that we don't know about 🤔

just imagine being stuck in some godforsaken war zone for like months and not knowing if you're ever gonna make it out 🤯😩 those 9 filipino mariners must've been totally stressed and scared to bits, and now that they're free again, they can finally breathe a sigh of relief... or so we hope 🙏 fingers crossed everything works out for them and they get back to their families in one piece 👫.

🙏 Can't believe those poor Filipino guys were held hostage for months 🤯! And now they're free 🌟. It's crazy how the Houthis just decided to release them out of nowhere... did they get some kinda deal or something? 🤑 The fact that they kept 3 of them captive is just so messed up 😩. I hope those guys can finally go home and be with their families again 👪

🚢🌊 omg can't believe the philippines got these 9 filipino mariners back 🙏 i'm so hyped for them, they've been thru hell and back since that july attack 🤯 hopefully this release is a sign of better things to come from the Houthis 💡 maybe they're tired of being bad guys and wanna show some mercy 🌈 anyway, gotta give it up to oman too for keeping an eye out and helping facilitate the release 👍 fingers crossed for more positive news in the future 🤞
