You Won’t Believe What’s Stuck in This Deer’s Antlers—and It’s a 2026 People's Choice Finalist

A disturbing yet fascinating photograph of a sika deer has made its way into the running for this year's People's Choice Award for Wildlife Photography. The image captures a rather gruesome scene: the decomposed head of another deer, lodged in the antlers of a victorious sika male.

According to witnesses, the two deer got their antlers stuck during an intense battle over a female. The rival died in the process, but not before its corpse was dragged around by the victorious deer for several days until the head finally dislodged.

While it may seem gruesome at first glance, this photograph has earned recognition as one of 24 finalists for the award due to its poignant and thought-provoking portrayal of life and death. The Natural History Museum of London describes the image as "a show of life and death bound together," a fitting description given the intense struggle depicted in the photograph.

The People's Choice Award allows non-expert judges to play a role in selecting the winner, making it a unique opportunity for people from all over the world to participate. As one might expect, this particular image has left some viewers in awe and others unsettled – yet it is undeniably a reminder of the raw power and intensity that exists within the natural world.

Meanwhile, other finalists have earned recognition for their stunning portrayals of wildlife, showcasing intricate patterns and majestic beauty. For instance, Polish photographer Artur Tomaszek's image features a tiny male broad-headed bark spider peeking out from the head of a camouflaged female – an unsettling yet captivating snapshot that highlights the intricate relationships within the insect world.

The award also honors photographs that offer more nuanced perspectives on wildlife and conservation issues. Australian photographer Adam Oswell's photograph depicts snares confiscated by rangers in Africa, serving as a powerful visual representation of the ongoing struggle to combat unauthorized snaring in national parks.

Another standout image is "Never-Ending Struggle," which features a sika deer with its antlers stuck to the head of another deer that had been killed during an intense battle over a female. The photograph was taken by Kohei Nagira, and it highlights the sometimes brutal nature of life in the wild.

The award also recognizes photographers who have captured remarkable moments from their personal experiences with wildlife. German photographer Peter Lindel spent nearly a week observing a kestrel family near his home in Dortmund, Germany, capturing heart-wrenching moments as they took their first leaps into adulthood.

🦌 this photo is wild 🤯 i mean, it's like something you'd see in a horror movie or something but at the same time, it's super educational about the natural world and how deer interact with each other. i love that it's part of the people's choice award because it shows us that even though we might not be wildlife experts, our opinions matter 🌟

🐰😱 can you believe this? some animal just drag another one's head around for days and it's considered art 🤯 meanwhile there are people out here struggling to find food or shelter and we're judging wildlife photos 🙄 and what's even more messed up is that the museum is like "oh life and death bound together" 💀 no, it's just an animal being dragged around by another one 🚮

I just saw this thread and I'm like "whoa that deer photo is crazy 🤯". I mean I get why it's making people think about life and death but at the same time it's kinda weird to see a dead body stuck in someone elses antlers 😂. I also love the idea of the People's Choice Award, it's so cool that anyone can vote for their fave photo 🗳️. And the one with the spider is wild, I wouldn't have thought to look at an insect like that but it's actually kinda beautiful? 💐

🦌💀 I'm literally OBSESSED with the People's Choice Award for Wildlife Photography this year 🤯! The photograph of the sika deer with its antlers stuck to another deer's head is like, whoa 😲! It's so raw and intense, it's like you can feel the struggle 💪. And the way Kohei Nagira captured that moment, it's just... wow 🔥. I mean, what's not to love about nature's own horror movie 🎬? The way the antlers are stuck together, it's like they're embracing each other in a twisted love affair 💕. Anyway, I'm 100% voting for "Never-Ending Struggle" - can't wait to see the winner announced! 🤞

omg this photo of the sika deer is SO intense 😱🦌 i mean i get why it's a finalist but at the same time i don't know if i can handle looking at it again its like the dead deer is still stuck to the antlers and its all just so... graphic 🤢 but at the same time i guess its also kinda beautiful in a twisted way? like the natural world is just this wild and unforgiving place and we should be grateful for the beauty and the struggle that comes with it 💪🦌

and can we talk about the other finalists tho? artur tomaszek's spider pic is giving me all the feels 🕷️❤️ and adam oswell's snares photo is just so powerful 🚫💔 kohei nagira's never-ending struggle pic is also really haunting 😩 but overall i'm just so inspired by these photographers and their perspectives on wildlife and conservation 💚🌿

I cant help but feel for that poor little kestrel chick... taking its first leaps into the wild 🐦😨 it's just heartbreaking to think about how vulnerable they must be at that age. I mean, Adam Oswell's photo of snares in Africa is a harsh reminder of the dangers our wildlife faces, and it's so important we keep raising awareness about conservation efforts 💔 Meanwhile, I'm not sure what to make of that sika deer with its antlers stuck to another deer's head... it's like nature's own dark drama unfolding before our eyes 🤯 Still, I think Kohei Nagira's photo is a powerful statement about the cycle of life and death in the wild. We should all take a moment to appreciate the beauty and complexity of the natural world 🌿

Omg, this picture of the sika deer is CRAZY 🤯! I mean, who knew deer could be so violent towards each other? 😱 But seriously, it's actually kinda fascinating how nature can be both beautiful and brutal at the same time. The way the photographer captured that gruesome scene is pretty incredible too - you can almost feel the tension in the air.

I love how this award celebrates not just amazing wildlife pics but also the stories behind them. Like, Kohei Nagira's "Never-Ending Struggle" photo is a reminder that even in the wild, death and violence are just part of life. It's a bit unsettling, but it's also super educational.

And have you seen Adam Oswell's image with the snares? 🤕 That's some powerful stuff right there. The fact that this award lets people from all over the world vote for their fave pics is really cool too - I love how inclusive and accessible it feels.

But what really gets me is how these photos remind us of our place in the wild. Like, we think we're so much more evolved than deer or spiders or whatever... 🙄 But honestly, they've been doing just fine without us for millions of years.

😊 I gotta say, this photo is wild (no pun intended) 🌳🦌! It's like, you don't expect to see something so brutal and yet so beautifully captured in a single frame. The way the antlers are stuck together... it's just intense 💪. And you're right, it's not just about the photo itself, but what it tells us about life and death in the wild 🌴.

I love how the People's Choice Award is all about giving everyone a voice in selecting the winner – it's like, anyone can appreciate the beauty or power of nature, regardless of their expertise 😊. And some of these other images? Wow... that spider photo is like, mind-blowing! 🐜👀.

And the ones that show the struggle for conservation... ugh, my heart goes out to those animals 🐰💔. It's just heartbreaking to see what humans can do to the natural world 😢. But at the same time, it's amazing to see people like Peter Lindel, capturing such intimate moments with wildlife – it's like we're seeing a whole new side of the animal kingdom 🌸.

Anyway, I'm rooting for the sika deer photo – it's just so raw and honest 💕. Fingers crossed! 😁

omg this pic of the sika deer is literally mind-blowing 🤯🦌 it's like you're right there with the deer fighting for its life, but at the same time it's so calm and natural 😲 i love how it shows the beauty and brutality of nature together. also the fact that this award lets regular ppl vote on who wins is amazing 🎉 can't wait to see which one wins!!!

I mean, can you even imagine the drama that went down between those two deer? 🤯 It's like something out of a wild west movie! But seriously though, I think it's amazing that the Natural History Museum is giving this photo some love - it's definitely a conversation starter. And let's be real, who doesn't love an underdog story? The fact that the smaller deer was able to take down the bigger one and drag its head around for days is just wild. I also love how the People's Choice Award lets people from all over the world participate - it's like a big ol' wildlife party 🎉!

I'm still trying to wrap my head around this award nomination 🤯. On one hand, it's fascinating (and slightly morbid) to see the intense struggle between these deer. It's a reminder that even in the natural world, there's no shortage of drama and action. But on the other hand, I have to wonder if we're getting too caught up in sharing gruesome images rather than focusing on more uplifting or conservation-oriented work 🌿.

I love the diversity of this year's finalists - from insects to mammals to bird photography 🐦🦊. And it's great that the award highlights photographers who are capturing raw, unfiltered moments from their own experiences with wildlife. But at the same time, I think we should be mindful of how our fascination with these images might impact how we perceive and interact with animals in the wild 🌸.

Overall, I think this is a thought-provoking reminder that there's beauty (and brutality) in every corner of the natural world 😊.

I'm like totally fascinated by this sika deer pic 🤯🦌. It's so wild to think about the intense battle that went down and how it led to this... unsettling image 😱. I mean, on one hand it's gruesome, but on the other hand, it's also kinda beautiful? Like, nature is wild and all that. And I love how the award is open to non-experts too - like, anyone can vote for their fave pic! 🗳️ The spider pic by Artur Tomaszek is giving me major creep vibes though 😳. And Adam Oswell's snare pics are so important for raising awareness about conservation issues... good on him 🙌. Kohei Nagira's sika deer pic is like, whoa - it's crazy to think about how stuck the other deer was 😂. Anyway, gotta see more of these amazing photos! 👀 [https://www.nature.com/articles/d41...//www.nature.com/articles/d41586-024-03325-2)

I'm not sure if I love or hate this photo of the sika deer... 🤔 it's like, wow that's intense! The fact that they got their antlers stuck and one died from it is just wild. But at the same time, it's kinda beautiful? Like, in a morbid way? 😅 The Natural History Museum calling it "a show of life and death bound together" makes sense, but I'm not sure if I'd go that far. It's like... yeah, nature can be brutal, but is this really something we want to celebrate or share with the world?

And what about the other finalists? Adam Oswell's photograph about snares in Africa feels super important and timely, but it's kinda harsh to look at. Is that even what we want people to see? 🤷‍♀️ Peter Lindel's kestrel photos are actually really beautiful and heart-wrenching, though. I love how he was able to capture those moments without scaring them away.

I guess what I'm saying is... this photo might be kinda cool, but it also feels kinda dark and morbid. Can we have both? 🤷‍♂️

omg u no wth is up w/ dis ppl's choice award 4 wildlife photography 🤯🌿 its like, so cool that we get 2 c pics of deer fightin 2 die lol 😂 but at the same time its kinda dark? i mean whos head gets stuck in another deers antlers?? gross! 🤢 but on a more serious note, its def interesting 2 see all these diff pics of wildlife & how they show us the 'real' world. like, we dont always get 2 c this stuff in the news or anything. and i love that its not just about expert judges pickin winners, its kinda fun 4 us regular ppl 2 chime in too 🤗

This image is crazy 😲 I mean, it's like the deer are fighting to death and then one of them just uses its antlers to pick up the other deer's head... that's some wild stuff! 🤯 And you know what's even crazier? People think this photo is poignant and thought-provoking because of how "raw power" it shows. Um, isn't that just a bunch of animals fighting for their lives? 🐰 I'm all for appreciating the natural world and all, but let's not get too poetic about it, okay?

And don't even get me started on the other finalists... some of these photos are beautiful, I'll give them that. But others are just, like, "oh look, a spider on a tree trunk." 🐜🌳 Give me something with a little more substance, you know? Like Adam Oswell's photo about snaring in Africa – now that's a real issue.

And have you seen Kohei Nagira's photo of the stuck deer? It's like... I get it, life is brutal in the wild. Can't we just appreciate the majesty of animals without having to see their dead bodies on display? 🤷‍♀️

This photo is wild 🤯... I mean, who needs reality TV when you have nature's own brutal drama playing out right before our eyes? It's crazy to think that this image was taken without the photographer even realizing it was about to happen - like the deer were just living their best lives until BAM! Instant gruesome scene 😳. On a more serious note, it's awesome to see wildlife photography being recognized for its ability to spark conversations and raise awareness about conservation issues 🌿. I love that the People's Choice Award lets anyone vote, making it an inclusive way for people from all over the world to share their passion for nature. Some of these photos are truly stunning... like that insect pic with the spider peeking out - who knew spiders could be so cool? 😎
