Zahawi failed to secure peerage from Badenoch before Reform UK defection, Tory sources claim – UK politics live

Tory sources claim that Nadhim Zahawi approached Kemi Badenoch's team about trying to become a Tory peer, but was told he wouldn't get one and subsequently defected to Reform UK. This is according to reports, although Zahawi has disputed the details of his conversations with Badenoch's team.

Tory sources say that Zahawi made multiple approaches in late 2024, asking to be on the most recent political peerages list. However, he was told "we were very clear he wasn't going to get one".

omg can you believe this? nadhim zahawi trying to become a tory peer 🤣 like who does that? and then they say noooo 😂 and he's all defected to reform uk... sounds like someone got rejected from the cool kids' club 🤪 guess they couldn't handle the whole 'tory peer' thing 👀 anyway, i mean i'm not surprised really, zahawi's always been a bit of a wild card 🌪️ but still it's funny 😂

🤔 gotta feel for Nadhim Zahawi, dude, he's trying his hand at politics and gets shut down by Tory sources 🚫. I mean, can you blame him though? Trying to become a Tory peer is like, super challenging especially when you're dealing with party insiders who are all about maintaining the status quo 💼.

I'm not surprised he defected to Reform UK, tbh 👀. It's like, if you're not gonna get ahead in the Tory party, why bother sticking around? 🤷‍♂️ And I think it's great that Zahawi is finding a new path that aligns with his values or whatever 💡.

The thing is though, politics can be super unpredictable and fluid, so we'll just have to wait and see how things play out for Nadhim in this new role 🤞. Maybe he'll surprise us all and become an awesome peer 🙌!

I'm not surprised to hear about Nadhim Zahawi's defection from the Tories 🤔. He did seem a bit of an oddball in their party, always speaking out on issues that didn't quite align with their views 🤷‍♂️. The idea that he was rejected for a peerage multiple times is pretty interesting though - what does it say about his influence within the party? 🤔

I'm also curious to know more about Reform UK now that Zahawi's defected to them 📈. They've always seemed like an outsider party, but having a big name like Zahawi on board could be a game-changer for them 💪.

It's also worth noting that this whole thing has happened in the midst of some pretty big changes within the Tory party 🔥. I'm not sure if this is a good or bad sign for their future, but it's definitely an interesting development 🤔.

lol what's up with this guy Z? always thinkin he can just jump ship and become a Tory peer lol nope got shot down multiple times 😂 so he goes deft to Reform UK who knew right? seems like he wanted that Tory title more than life itself 🤣 anyway not surprised he took the bait, we all know politicians are all about the power and prestige 💼 now it's gonna be interesting to see how this plays out 🤔

I'm surprised to hear that Nadhim Zahawi is ditching the Tories for Reform UK. I thought he was all about being part of the party no matter what 🤔. But I guess you never really know what's going on behind closed doors, right? It's pretty interesting that he made multiple attempts to join the peerages list but got shut down each time. That must've been a bit deflating for him. And now he's jumping ship for Reform UK - who knows what their plans are? They're definitely shaking things up in British politics. The Tories have had some major defections lately, it feels like they're losing people left and right 🤯.

Omg have you guys seen this? Nadhim Zahawi just defected from Tory to Reform UK over a peerage 🤯 I mean I'm no expert but it seems pretty petty that the Tories are throwing shade at him like this. But what's up with Kemi Badenoch's team telling him he wouldn't get one in the first place? Did they really have to be so blunt about it? 😒 Either way it looks like Zahawi's got a point, peerages aren't exactly awarded based on merit these days 🙄 And I'm genuinely curious what will happen next... will Reform UK become the new "Tory-lite" 🤔

idk why ppl r so shocked about zahawi jumping ship 🤔... like whats wrong with trying new things & moving 2 a party that aligns w/ ur views? 🚀 reform uk is probs not gonna make a huge diff in the grand scheme of things, but hey, its better than being stuck in the toffs corner 👒 and who knows maybe hes got some good ideas to share 💡... cant blame him 4 trying 2 get back in w/ reform uk, esp after getting rejected by the tories 🚫

I'm so not buying this 🙄... I mean, if Tory sources are saying that Zahawi's team approached Badenoch's for a peerage, but then Zahawi just jumped ship and joined Reform UK? It doesn't add up. Like, wouldn't Badenoch's team have told him to pound sand if they didn't think he was getting the nod? 🤔

And what's with all these "Tory sources" spewing out info like it's nobody's business? Can't we get a straight answer for once? 💁‍♀️ It's just so frustrating when you're trying to stay informed but everyone's always playing both sides.

I swear, if I were in Zahawi's shoes, I'd be totally confused too... how else would he know which way was up? 😂

🤔 I'm kinda surprised if Nadhim Zahawi really thought becoming a Tory peer was gonna happen for him. I mean, it's not like he hasn't been in politics long enough or something 😒. The thing is, you gotta wonder why he'd even bother trying if the Tories were already saying no from the get-go. Was he just looking for a way out? Or did he actually think they'd come around and give him one of those peerages 🤑?

And then Reform UK comes along and offers him a 'home'... it's almost like that was always the plan 😏. I'm not saying Zahawi's not a smart guy or anything, but sometimes you gotta wonder about these political moves 🤷‍♂️. It's all very interesting, but at the end of the day, what really matters is what's best for him and his career 💼

Ugh, this is a sign of things getting worse in UK politics 🤕💔 I mean, Nadhim Zahawi was already a bit of a weirdo for joining the Tories after leaving Ukip, but now it seems like they're just shoving him away when he tries to advance... and he's now jumping ship to Reform UK, which is basically just a new name for the same old far-right nonsense 🤪🔴. And what's up with these Tory sources being so extra? Can't they just keep some secrets to themselves? It's like they're trying to make this guy look even more dodgy than he already does 😂👀

I'm surprised by this news 🤔. Nadhim Zahawi's decision to join Reform UK seems pretty sudden and I wonder what really went down with Kemi Badenoch's team. If Tory sources are saying that he was told flat out he wouldn't get a peerage, it does seem like a pretty clear 'no'. You'd think if he wanted in so bad, he'd've made more of an effort to convince them otherwise 😐. Still, I guess politics can be messy and you never know what's really going on behind the scenes 🤷‍♂️. One thing for sure is that Zahawi's a smart guy and it'll be interesting to see how this all plays out 👀.

😊 omg i feel like zahawi is just trying to make a fresh start after all that drama with truss 🤯 but it's weird that tory sources are saying these things about him 👀 maybe they're just mad 'cause he jumped ship? 💁‍♀️ anyway, reform uk seems like a cool place for him to join - they're all about centrist politics and stuff 🌎 hope he finds his groove over there 🤞

idk why people are already making a big deal about this 😐... nadjim zahawi just wants a chance to serve in the house of lords like every other tory MP right? 🤷‍♂️ i mean, who hasn't tried to move up the ranks at some point? maybe he was told no, but that doesn't mean he should be ashamed of it 🙅‍♂️. reform uk is a real party now, let's give them a chance 💖... and btw, why are people so quick to believe tory sources? can't we get multiple sides of the story for once? 🤔

omg can you even believe this?? 🤯 so apparently nadjim zahawi (aka the british pm) was all like "hey kemi badenoch's team i wanna be a tory peer" and they're all like "nah bruv, that's not gonna happen". and then he just up and left to join reform uk 🤦‍♂️. what even is this? it sounds like some crazy office drama 📝 but for the pm position lol. i don't get why zahawi would want a peerage anyway, doesn't he already have one with the tories? 🤔 and how does the process even work? do people just apply and hope for the best or is there more to it? 🤔♀️

lol what a career pivot 🤣 so after a stint as Chancellor of the Exchequer and managing the Brexit recovery, Nadhim Zahawi just decided to hang up his suit and tie for a life in politics... or rather not 😂. Reform UK, huh? I'm sure it's got nothing to do with the party's, ahem, "reform" policies 🤑. Anyways, I guess you could say he was looking for a 'peer-less' opportunity 💡 (sorry, had to). Can't wait to see what other moves Zahawi makes next, maybe he'll try his hand at acting in a British soap opera 📺.

just wonderin if zahawi's defected move is a big deal or not... seems like a pretty standard politician switch, ya know? been happenin for ages 🤔 anyway, reform uk thingy seem legit, but tory party politics can be super messy, so hard to say what's true and what's not 😒 guess we'll just have to wait & see how this all plays out 👀

lol what a drama fest 🤣 this guy zahawi is just like the ultimate player 🙄 trying to join kemi badenoch's team then suddenly defecting to reform uk lol like did he really think no one would notice 😂 anyway i mean who tries to become a tory peer and gets told no way by the team lol that's just hilarious 👎 what's next gonna be him saying he was just joking about leaving? 🤦‍♂️ news at 11 📰

🤔 so i'm calling BS on this whole thing... i mean, no one just gets told they won't get a peerage without making some kind of deal or compromise. what's the point of even trying if you're just gonna be told "no"? and what exactly did Zahawi offer in return for not getting a peerage? is it that simple? 🤑

🤔 I'm not surprised really, Nadhim Zahawi's move to Reform UK isn't that unexpected considering his views and the fact he's been at odds with some of his own party lately. It seems like a pretty calculated risk for him to join Reform UK now, especially if there are rumors about more seats up for grabs in the peerages list. 📊
