Two teens have been taken into custody after a shooting incident at New York City's busiest subway station, the 42nd Street–Port Authority station. The NYPD reported that no one was injured in the incident, which occurred around 8:30 p.m. on the mezzanine level serving the A, C, and E trains.
Police were responding to a 911 call about shots fired when they found a single shell casing but were unable to recover the gun used in the shooting. The NYPD is still investigating who the teens were targeting at the time of the incident.
Ronald Gutierrez, 18, was charged with reckless endangerment, possession of a knife, and theft of service after allegedly jumping a turnstile. His address was given as the nearby Row Hotel on 8th Avenue in Midtown, which has served as one of the city's largest shelters for migrant families over the past few years.
Carlos Loyo Jhean, also 18, faced similar charges, including reckless endangerment and theft of service. Police said he lives in North Corona.
Both teens were being held awaiting their arraignments in Manhattan Criminal Court on Tuesday. Information about their lawyers was not immediately available.
The NYPD has reported a decline in crime in the city's transit system compared to last year. In November, crimes declined by nearly 25% and this month is considered the safest November on record for transit crime since the COVID-19 pandemic. However, in some parts of the city, including the Midtown South Precinct which includes the Port Authority, there has been an uptick in transit crime, with 12 additional incidents reported compared to the same point in 2024.
