2 teens arrested in Port Authority subway shooting, no injuries, NYPD says

Two teens have been taken into custody after a shooting incident at New York City's busiest subway station, the 42nd Street–Port Authority station. The NYPD reported that no one was injured in the incident, which occurred around 8:30 p.m. on the mezzanine level serving the A, C, and E trains.

Police were responding to a 911 call about shots fired when they found a single shell casing but were unable to recover the gun used in the shooting. The NYPD is still investigating who the teens were targeting at the time of the incident.

Ronald Gutierrez, 18, was charged with reckless endangerment, possession of a knife, and theft of service after allegedly jumping a turnstile. His address was given as the nearby Row Hotel on 8th Avenue in Midtown, which has served as one of the city's largest shelters for migrant families over the past few years.

Carlos Loyo Jhean, also 18, faced similar charges, including reckless endangerment and theft of service. Police said he lives in North Corona.

Both teens were being held awaiting their arraignments in Manhattan Criminal Court on Tuesday. Information about their lawyers was not immediately available.

The NYPD has reported a decline in crime in the city's transit system compared to last year. In November, crimes declined by nearly 25% and this month is considered the safest November on record for transit crime since the COVID-19 pandemic. However, in some parts of the city, including the Midtown South Precinct which includes the Port Authority, there has been an uptick in transit crime, with 12 additional incidents reported compared to the same point in 2024.

🤔 This is crazy... I mean, I'm glad no one got hurt but like, what's going on? Two teens just shooting up a subway station and no one knows why they did it 😕... It's like, you're already in trouble for jumping a turnstile and then this happens... 🚫

And the NYPD is saying crime has been declining overall in the subways but then these incidents pop up and now it's like "hold up" 🤦‍♂️. I'm all for people to follow the rules, but it feels like sometimes our system can be kinda unfair.

We need to figure out why this kid did what he did and make sure something like that doesn't happen again 💡...

Dude, can you believe this? Another shooting at a NYC subway station 😂... just kidding, I'm not making light of it. But seriously, who needs that kind of drama on their commute? 🚨 I heard they found a single shell casing and no one got hurt (I guess the teens' aim was a little "off" 🤣). What's crazy is they were charged with other stuff like stealing a turnstile... talk about getting in trouble for just trying to skip the line! 😂 And now they're waiting in court, but I'm pretty sure their lawyers will be able to work some magic and get them off with community service... or maybe just give 'em a time-out 🤪. Anyway, it's good to know crime is going down in general (25% less crimes? Nice work, NYC! 👍). But hey, there's always an exception to the rule, right?

man, can't believe what's happening with all these teens getting arrested at the subway 🤯. one minute you're chillin', next you're in cuffs for nothin'. anyway, gotta wonder if it's just a coincidence that both of these teens got caught up in this mess or if there's somethin' more goin' on? NYPD's doin' their thing to keep the city safe, but at the same time, we gotta acknowledge that some areas are strugglin' with transit crime 🚨. hope they can get to the bottom of it and figure out what's really goin' on 💡

man... this is crazy 🤯 a shooting at one of the busiest subway stations in the city and nobody got hurt? but 2 teens are behind bars now for jumping a turnstile and possessing a knife? it's just not adding up. we need to address the root causes of crime, like poverty and lack of opportunities, instead of just locking people up. and what's with the decline in crime stats overall? is that just because they're focusing on more visible crimes or are we really seeing a decrease in underlying issues?

man this is crazy how two teens can just walk into a crowded subway station and start shooting anyone who's not their friend lol what's even more wild is that they didn't even get caught right away 🤯 like someone must've been like "omg did you guys hear shots being fired?" but nobody else got hurt thankfully. btw i'm still trying to wrap my head around how good the NYPD has been doing on reducing crime in the city's transit system. 25% less crimes in November is straight fire 💥

🤔 just got out of a subway station that's not even near 42nd Street–Port Authority and I'm still trying to process what happened... two teens shot on the busiest subway station in NYC? 🚫 That's crazy! and I know some people are saying it's a decline in crime overall, but like, 25% less crime is still too many crimes for my liking 😟. especially when there are areas where transit crime is on the rise... I mean what's going on with our city? 🤷‍♂️

omg I was at Times Square last week and I saw like a million people rushing to catch trains 🚂😅 did they say what kinda gun they used? it's crazy how some ppl do that for no reason at all 😒 I'm glad nobody got hurt tho... wait, is it even legal to carry knives on the subway now?! I thought that was a thing back in 2018 🤔 and now it seems like we're having more issues with it. can someone pls explain what's going on with the crime rate? 🤷‍♀️ is it just me or has everyone been walking around with their headphones on lately, it feels so weird 💻

🤕 Just heard about that subway shooting incident in NYC and it's crazy to think about what could've happened if someone got hurt... 2 teens, both 18, are in custody now, but it's still frustrating that they were able to carry a knife around without getting caught sooner 🤦‍♂️. And on top of that, the NYPD is saying crime has gone down overall in transit, but areas like Port Authority are seeing an uptick? It's like our city is trying to balance all these different stats at once 😩. What's going on with our public transportation system? Can't we keep everyone safe? 🤔

Ugh, can't believe these two teens got away with basically jumping a turnstile and now they're being charged with more serious stuff 🤦‍♂️? I mean, what's next? A teenager getting shot and still managing to get off scot-free? Reckless endangerment is pretty serious, especially in a crowded subway station. And theft of service? Like, come on, that's just plain stupid 🙄. The NYPD's stats might be trending upwards, but incidents like this one make you wonder if they're just covering up for the real issue - lack of resources and funding for mental health services or something...

OMG you guys 🤯 I'm still trying to process what's happening at this subway station 😱 Two teens are arrested after a shooting incident and no one was injured but like how did it even come to that? 💔 I mean, I know crime rates have been going down overall in NYC but this is just crazy. And can we talk about the fact that these two guys were already in trouble for jumping a turnstile 🤦‍♂️? It's just another example of how our justice system needs to do more to prevent these kinds of situations from escalating. 💪 I'm glad the police were able to respond quickly and keep everyone safe but we need to figure out what's driving this uptick in transit crime in some areas 🤔.

😬😢🚨💥 just heard about this crazy situation at the subway station 🚂😱 two teens shot 💉 but luckily no one got hurt 🙏 police are still trying to figure out who they were targeting 🔍👀 and now they're facing some serious charges 😳🚔

its weird that there was a decline in crime overall 📉 but then you see incidents like this and its like what the heck is going on? 🤷‍♂️💥 the city needs to figure out how to keep these kinds of things from happening again 🔒👮‍♂️

and can we talk about how they managed to escape without anyone getting hurt? 💪😲 that takes some serious skill and luck 🍀💥

This is a classic case of a "wild card" situation - where do you even begin? I mean, one minute these teens are just minding their own biz, and the next they're involved in a potentially life-altering incident that puts innocent lives at risk! 🤯 The NYPD's investigation will likely shed some light on this, but it raises questions about how our youth system is addressing issues of mental health, social services, and overall support for vulnerable populations.

It's also got me wondering if the city's resources are being utilized effectively to prevent such incidents from happening in the first place? 🤔 We've seen a decline in crime across the board, but what about targeted initiatives that can specifically tackle issues affecting our youth? The fact that Ronald Gutierrez allegedly had ties to the Row Hotel, which is a shelter for migrant families, makes me think there might be a larger narrative here. 💡 Are we talking about systemic failures in addressing poverty and inequality? The uptick in crime in Midtown South Precinct does raise concerns - are our community policing strategies being effective enough?

It's also interesting that this incident comes up amidst the backdrop of a city-wide decline in transit crimes. 🚂 Is it possible that this is just a localized anomaly, or do we need to re-examine our priorities and consider more comprehensive solutions?

omg can't believe this happened 🤯 like literally just yesterday i was scrolling through twitter and saw the news but it seems no one's talking about it now idk what's up... anyway, so my cousin works at a shelter near that area and he's all shook up about it. he said it's not uncommon for teens to get violent when they're feeling desperate or something. also, 25% is still a pretty big drop in crime 🤔 but yeah, it's weird how some areas are seeing an uptick in incidents... does anyone know if the cops are doing anything else to prevent this kind of stuff?

man... can't believe this happened again 🤕 at one of the busiest subway stations in the city... it's like they were just messing around and didn't think about who was gonna get caught in the crossfire lol. i'm all for the NYPD doing what they gotta do, but come on, 2 teens with guns? that's not the way to handle your problems, fam 🙄. and now we're hearing that their addresses are shelters for migrant families... it just doesn't add up, you know? how did these guys end up at these places? seems like a whole lot of coincidences going on here... or maybe they were just trying to blend in with the locals 😂. anyway, hope no one got hurt more than they already have 💔. this incident is definitely giving me anxiety about riding the subway again 🚨💥
