Three people lost their lives in the Bronx over the weekend, according to NYPD officials. The violence unfolded in a series of incidents that left one man dead at a homeless shelter and another at an apartment building.
On Saturday evening, police responded to an emergency call about a 48-year-old man found unconscious in his bed at a men's shelter on Phelan Place. Witnesses reported that the victim had been attacked with a metal locker door while he was sleeping. The man was taken to Saint Barnabas Hospital and pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
Anthony Mawuena, a 37-year-old resident of the shelter, was arrested in connection with the incident and charged with murder, manslaughter, and possession of a weapon. Authorities say it's unclear if Mawuena knew his victim, but are investigating the circumstances surrounding their relationship.
Later that night, another man was found dead at an apartment building on East 162nd Street after being stabbed multiple times by Tyquan McBride, who had also been living in the building. The 48-year-old victim died at the scene, while a 39-year-old resident received several slashes to his arm and is listed as stable.
McBride faces multiple charges related to the fatal stabbing and is being investigated for any potential connection to the two victims. Police have not yet released information about McBride's relationship with his alleged victims.
Violence continued to erupt in the Bronx on Sunday evening, when police responded to a shooting inside a building on Southern Boulevard. Chanler Reams, a 25-year-old resident of the building, was shot in the head and pronounced dead at the scene. Police have not made any arrests yet, but are investigating a motive for the killing.
Three hours later, a separate shooting occurred on Brook Avenue, leaving two people and another man wounded. Two Bronx residents were arrested in connection with the incident: Jorge Correa, 23, and Jaden Hall, 18. They both face charges related to attempted murder and possession of a weapon.
The weekend's violence comes amidst a decline in homicides across the city so far this year, but problems persist in certain precincts where the incidents took place. The NYPD has reported that killings are down more than 17% compared to the same period last year, but some areas have seen an increase in violent crime.
