Guinea-Bissau’s new military ruler moves to consolidate power after coup

Guinea-Bissau's new military ruler, General Horta Inta-A, has taken steps to consolidate power following a coup that ousted President Umaro Sissoco Embalo. The general appointed Finance Minister Ilidio Vieira Te as the prime minister in a decree on Friday, just days after military officers took control of the country.

During the swearing-in ceremony, General Horta told Prime Minister Te that he hoped they would "continue to work hand-in-hand." Both officials are close to President Embalo, who had been seeking re-election against his main challenger, Fernando Dias. However, regional and world leaders have condemned the military coup, with the African Union suspending Guinea-Bissau and the Economic Community of West African States freezing it out of decision-making bodies.

The United Nations Secretary-General has also condemned the military's "unacceptable violation of democratic principles," while the European Union urged a swift return to constitutional order. The prime minister of Senegal called the coup a "sham" and called for the electoral process to be allowed to continue.

Ilidio Vieira Te, who previously served in Embalo's government, is seen as a trusted ally by the new military leaders. Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan accused Embalo of staging a "ceremonial coup" to stay in power.

As calm returns to the capital, Bissau, army checkpoints have been lifted, and people and vehicles are circulating through the streets. The main stock exchange and markets have also reopened. For many citizens, like 25-year-old street vendor Boubacar Embalo, the lifting of the curfew has allowed them to resume their daily lives.

The situation remains tense, with reports of human rights violations, including arbitrary arrests and detentions of government officials and opposition politicians. The UN human rights chief has called for the immediate release of those detained and respect for fundamental freedoms.

Ugh 🤔 I don't think this is going to end well... A new military ruler just taking over in Guinea-Bissau? This whole thing feels like a recipe for disaster 🌪️. They're already lifting checkpoints and markets are reopening, but the UN human rights chief is calling out human rights violations, which means there's still some serious stuff going on under the surface 🕵️‍♀️. And what about the people who got arrested or detained? We can't just ignore that 😔. This coup is a major red flag 🚨 and I have a bad feeling it's gonna take months (or even years) for things to settle down 🙅‍♂️.

💡 think guinea bissau is in a bit of a sticky situation right now. it's like they're caught between different groups with different interests at play 🤝 general horta inta-a seems like he's trying to assert control but the regional and world leaders are not having it 🚫 the african union suspending them and the EU urging for a swift return to order...it's all a bit messy. 💔 still, i think it's good that they're lifting the curfew and stuff is starting to calm down in bissau. but at the same time, human rights violations are a big concern 🤕 gotta hope that ilidio vieira te can navigate this whole situation without further complicating things. 👀

Honestly, I think this is a huge red flag for Guinea-Bissau 🚨. I mean, General Horta Inta-A just took over like that? It's not exactly reassuring to see the government handing out power so easily. And what's up with Ilidio Vieira Te being appointed as Prime Minister without even going through the proper channels? 🤔 It feels like they're more interested in saving face than actually addressing the issues that led to this coup in the first place.

And I'm a bit concerned about the reaction from regional leaders and the UN. It's great that they're speaking out, but at the same time, it feels like a lot of empty words without any real action being taken. 🤷‍♀️ The situation is tense, and we need to see some concrete steps towards restoring democracy and human rights.

I'm also worried about Boubacar Embalo's story 🤕. I mean, who gets arrested just for trying to go back to their daily life? It's unacceptable, and the UN needs to do more to hold these people accountable. Let's hope things start to improve soon! 💡

🤬 this coup in Guinea Bissau is getting outta hand fam 🤕 general horta inta-a gotta calm down & stop all these arrests & detentions, its not fair to the people 😒 especially after embalo was ousted like what even is going on here 🤔 the african union suspending them and eu saying they need to get back to constitutional order is a total no-brainer 🙄 & that lil te guy as prime minister lolol does he know what he's doing? 🤣

omg did u know that africa is home to so many amazing animal species? like guinea-bissau has elephants and lions 🐆🦁 i feel bad 4 the ppl in their country right now tho...it's all kinda confusing wut happens in politics lol why cant we just focus on animals instead? 🐒 i guess it's nice that things are getting back to normal tho...but wut about those people who got arrested? thats so unfair 😔

its all so messy when a country just gets taken over by a military coup 🤯 like what even is a constitutional order anymore? its like guinea-bissau is this tiny tiny thing getting swept up in a big ol wave of uncertainty, with no clear direction or plan for the future. and the international community is just kinda standing around, talking about how unacceptable it all is, but not really doing much to help 🤷‍♀️ i mean, what can they do? its not like sending troops over there is gonna fix everything, but still gotta try right? 🌎

OMG, have you seen what's going on in Guinea-Bissau?? 🤯 This coup is so worrying! I mean, General Horta Inta-A taking over and making his buddy Ilidio Vieira Te prime minister... it just feels like more of the same old politics we don't need. And what about all these arrests and detentions? The UN human rights chief is calling for an immediate release - can you imagine being locked up just 'cause you spoke out against the government? 😱

And have you seen how regional leaders are reacting? Like, Senegal's PM saying it was a "sham" election... that's some serious shade. I'm all for democracy and fair elections, but when you see countries like this one undermining their own systems... it's just so frustrating.

I don't think we're seeing the end of this story anytime soon, tbh. I mean, what about the impact on everyday people in Guinea-Bissau? The main stock exchange just reopened - that's a small victory for now, but it'll take more than just economic fixes to fix this country. We need real change, not just more power struggles. 🤔

man this guinea bissau stuff is wild lol 🤯 they had a new president just like 2 weeks ago and now some military dude takes over ? what's going on in that country... it seems like embalo was trying to hold onto power and now everyone's all upset about the coup but honestly who knows what's really gonna happen... i hope ilidio vieira te can do something to stabilize the situation, and for the UN to keep saying the same thing about democratic principles being violated is kinda repetitive 🙄 still, good luck to those guineans trying to rebuild their lives after all this drama 😔

🤔 Guinea-Bissau's military coup is super worrying! Like, what happened to democracy, right? 😬 General Horta Inta-A taking power is not exactly reassuring... especially with Ilidio Vieira Te being Embalo's old buddy 🤑. I'm all for regional leaders speaking out against this, like the AU and EU suspending Guinea-Bissau from decision-making bodies. The UN Secretary-General calling it a "violation of democratic principles" is also spot on! 🙅‍♂️ It's crazy how some people can just stage a coup and not even bother with an election 😒. I hope those detained are released ASAP, human rights chief @UNHCHR should keep pushing for this. The main stock exchange opening again is great news though 💰, now let's see if calmness returns to the capital. Can't help but wonder what Fernando Dias' reaction would've been if he'd won that election 🤔

🤔 I'm kinda surprised they're letting people back to their normal lives so fast. Like, yeah, the army lifted checkpoints and stuff, but what about the human rights issues tho? 🚨 Those arbitrary arrests and detentions are still happening, right? It's all well and good that markets are open and curfew's been lifted, but can't we get a bit more transparency here? 👀 I'm also wondering how they're gonna make sure everyone's voice is heard during this transition. Transparency in government is key to avoiding situations like this... 🤷‍♂️

I'm freaking out about this whole thing 🤯💥! Guinea-Bissau's situation is like, super worrying 🤔. I mean, what's going on with these military leaders? They just took over and now they're talking about consolidating power 💪? It's like, who gets to decide what happens next in this country? And what about the people? They're stuck in this limbo where they can't even leave their homes 🚫. I'm thinking about all the protests that must've gone down when Embalo was running for re-election... did anyone know something was gonna go down like this? 🤷‍♂️ It's just, you feel me? The whole world is talking about it 🌎, but what's happening on the ground in Bissau? How are people really feeling right now?

man... this coup thing is getting outta hand 🤯... everyone's talking about it, but I feel like we're not really seeing the whole picture here... General Horta Inta-A takes over, Ilidio Vieira Te becomes PM, but where's the opposition in all this? Fernando Dias was the one running against Embalo for re-election, now what happens to him? 🤔

and yeah, I can see why regional leaders are calling out the military's actions - it's not exactly a democratic process here... the UN is right to say there's been an "unacceptable violation of democratic principles"... and Goodluck Jonathan saying Embalo might have tried to stay in power by staging a coup... that raises some questions about Embalo's intentions 🤷‍♂️

anyway, it's good to see people like Boubacar Embalo getting back to their daily lives after the curfew was lifted... but at the same time, we need to make sure those who are detained or arrested are treated fairly and get a chance to speak out about what happened to them 💪
