Jack and the Beanstalk review – sass, sparkle and fee-fi-fo fun sock it to the baddies

Sonia Jalaly's retelling of Jack and the Beanstalk has dropped the classic tale into a school in Hammersmith, where it takes on a decidedly modern tone. The story now revolves around Fleshcreep, a meat-loving monster who runs the institution with an iron fist, seeking to wipe children's minds clean of their imagination.

Director Nicholai La Barrie leans into the festive atmosphere, injecting the production with an infectious sparkle that permeates every aspect of the show. Fairy Godfather, played by Jade Hackett, is a standout in this production, bringing a commanding presence and warmth to her character. She effortlessly weaves together wizardry and wisdom, conjuring up a sense of wonder that is impossible to resist.

The fairy tale's familiar beats are tweaked to accommodate a more contemporary narrative, eschewing overt politics for lighthearted charm. While some may find this shift in tone jarring at times, the show remains engaging, thanks largely to Hackett's exceptional performance.

La Barrie's reliance on cheer and sparkle is admirable, as evident in Kayla Lomas-Kirton's choreography, which sends the stage into a dizzying disco ball frenzy. Joey James' portrayal of Jack is endearingly nervous, often hiding behind a sock puppet that struggles to make an impact. However, Sienna Widd's sassy Jill proves a more compelling foil to Fleshcreep's menace.

Partridge brings depth to his villainous role as Sam Harrison's dame, imbuing the character with sinister undertones. Even the audience can't help but be won over by her malevolence, rendering this a thoroughly entertaining pantomime experience.

Umm whatttt 🤔 i think its kinda weird that they changed the classic beanstalk story into some psycho-fantasy thingy... like whats wrong with just telling the same old tale we know & love? 😂 fleshcreep sounds like somethin outta a bad dream lololol

I'm so skeptical about this 'modern retelling' of Jack and the Beanstalk... 🤔 I mean, who thought it was a good idea to turn a classic tale into some cheesy school play? Fleshcreep sounds like just an excuse for lazy writing. And don't even get me started on the 'infectious sparkle' 😒 – just code for 'trying too hard to be festive'. The cast is probably getting paid way more than they're worth for this cringeworthy production...

I'M ABSOLUTELY LOVING THIS modern twist on Jack and the Beanstalk!!! THE CAST IS AMAZING AND I MEAN WHO DOESNT LOVE A GOOD DISCO BALL FRENZY ON STAGE?!?!!! BUT SERIOUSLY, JADE HACKETT'S PERFORMANCE AS FAIRY GODFATHER IS PURE MAGIC!!! SHE BRINGS SUCH WARMTH AND COMMAND TO HER ROLE IT'S HARD NOT TO GET CHILLS!!! AND KAYLA LOMAS-KIRTON'S CHOREOGRAPHY IS EVERYTHING AND MORE!!!

🎭 Just saw the modern retelling of Jack and the Beanstalk and I gotta say, it was a wild ride 🤯! Director Nicholai La Barrie brought so much sparkle to the production that it's infectious 🌟. The cast is amazing, Jade Hackett as Fairy Godfather steals the show with her commanding presence 👑. But what I loved most is how they tweaked the classic tale to make it more relatable to kids today without losing the magic ✨. It's not perfect, but it's definitely a fun twist on the old story 🤔. Can't wait to see more adaptations like this! 💖

I just saw this panto and I'm still thinking about how they made that giant beanstalk out of... like, what was it? Cardboard or something? I mean, it was super cool but also kinda flimsy 🤔. And I love Jade Hackett as the Fairy Godfather, she's so nice in real life too 💖. But what was up with Joey James hiding behind that sock puppet? Wasn't he just like 5 years old again or something? 🎂. Also, why did they have to make Fleshcreep a meat-loving monster? That sounds kinda gross 🤢. Can someone explain the production design on that beanstalk thingy to me?

omg I just saw the most epic retelling of Jack and the Beanstalk ever! 🤯 The way they've modernized the classic tale is genius - who wouldn't want to see Fleshcreep trying to wipe out children's imaginations? 😂 The cast is absolute fire, especially that Fairy Godfather Jade Hackett slaying her role 🎩💫 I loved how they balanced out the lighthearted tone with some dark vibes too, made it feel fresh but still festive! 🌟 The choreo was straight flames, I'm literally getting disco fever 💃🏻🔥 The cast's chemistry is on point, even that sock puppet couldn't save Joey James' Jack from being a bit meh 😂 Sienna Widd's sassy Jill tho 👯‍♀️ had my back! 👍

I'm not sure I fully buy into this 'modern' retelling of Jack and the Beanstalk 🤔... I mean, what's next? A Harry Potter pantomime where Voldemort is just trying to be friendly? It seems like they're watering down the classic tale to fit a more lighthearted, Disney-esque vibe. Don't get me wrong, it sounds like the cast has put in some amazing performances - Jade Hackett's Fairy Godfather does sound fantastic! 🤩 But can we still have a good, old-fashioned scary pantomime without all the sugary sweetness? I guess that's just my old-school self talking 😊...

awww, it sounds like this retelling of Jack and the Beanstalk is gonna be SO much fun!!! 🎉 fleshcreep as a meat-loving monster sounds like a hilarious twist, and jade hackett's fairy godfather character already has me sold 😍 i love that they're focusing on lighthearted charm instead of politics - it's so refreshing to see a pantomime production that's all about spreading joy 🎊 kayla lomas-kirton's choreography sounds AMAZING, can't wait to see the disco ball frenzy 🤩 and sienna widd's sassy jill is already my fave 💁‍♀️ what do you think of the cast?

Wow 😍, I loved how they modernized the classic tale of Jack and the Beanstalk to make it more relatable and fun for kids today! The use of dance and sparkle really brings out the festive atmosphere and makes you want to join in on the fun 🎉. Interesting how they kept the core message about imagination and wonder intact, while still making it relevant to modern times 💡

ugh I dont get why they gotta change the classic tale like that 🤔 Fleshcreep sounds so creepy lol like who runs a school like that? and I'm not sure about this modern tone thing... doesn't feel very festive to me, feels more like something from a bad 90s kids show 📺 but hey at least Jade Hackett is awesome as the fairy godfather! 👑 that sparkle thingy seems kinda over the top though 😏

I'm not sure about this retold Jack and the Beanstalk thing... 🤔 It sounds like they're trying too hard to make it modern and festive, you know? I mean, Fleshcreep is just a meat-loving monster with an iron fist? It's kinda weird. And I don't think they need to "wipe children's minds clean of their imagination" because, newsflash, kids already have super wild imaginations! 😂 But hey, if it gets kids laughing and engaged, then I'm all for it. The casting sounds pretty great though, especially that Fairy Godfather – she seems like a total boss 💁‍♀️.

OMG, you guys! 🤯 I just saw this modern retelling of Jack and the Beanstalk and it's SOOO good!!! 😍 The twist with Fleshcreep as the bad guy is genius, like who wouldn't want to see a meat-loving monster terrorizing kids at school? 🤪 But seriously, the director Nicholai La Barrie did an amazing job bringing this modern take on the classic tale. That Fairy Godfather character Jade Hackett was ABSOLUTE PERFECTION 🎀 and her presence totally made the whole show shine! 💫 And can we talk about Sienna Widd's sassy Jill? 😏 She stole the show, imo! The disco ball choreography was also SO cool 🕺 but I gotta say, Joey James' sock puppet as Jack felt a bit...meh 🤷‍♂️ still, all in all, this modern retelling of Jack and the Beanstalk is totally worth checking out! 🎬

Blimey 😂... I mean, I'm all for a modern retelling of a classic tale, but this Fleshcreep fella sounds like a right ol' nasty piece of work 🤪! I love how the director's gone for a more lighthearted approach, though - it's just what we need to bring some festive cheer back into our lives 🎄. And Jade Hackett as Fairy Godfather? Sorted! She's always been a talented lass 👸. I'm intrigued by this Kayla Lomas-Kirton chap's disco ball choreography... sounds like it'll get the kids dancing and having a right ol' knees-up 💃. But, fair play to the whole cast for bringing some sparkle to what could've been a dark tale 🌟. Bring on the popcorn and let's enjoy the show!

I'm low-key obsessed w/ this modern retelling of Jack and the Beanstalk 🤩🎭! Fleshcreep as the villain is totes iconic 😈👻, but I love how the show still manages to bring out the magic ✨💫. Jade Hackett's Fairy Godfather is giving me LIFE 💖🧚‍♀️, and that disco ball choreo? 🔥😍. It's like a modern fairy tale for grown-ups 👩‍🎓. I'm not mad about the tone shift at all 🙅‍♀️, it just adds to the whimsy 😊. Can't wait to see this show in person 🎟️! 👏
