Mamdani taps NYC school nurses, peers to bring people indoors during ‘lethal cold' stretch

New York City Prepares for Lethal Cold Snap as Mayor Vows 'All Hands on Deck'

As a deadly cold snap looms over the Big Apple, Mayor Zohran Mamdani has announced an extensive network of warming centers and emergency measures to protect vulnerable New Yorkers. The real-feel temperatures are expected to plummet to 10 below zero this weekend, prompting concerns of severe hypothermia and frostbite.

Seventeen people have lost their lives outside during the harsh weather stretch, with preliminary indications suggesting 13 died from hypothermia and three from overdoses. Mamdani described the situation as "lethal," warning that even brief exposure to the extreme cold poses a significant risk.

To combat the crisis, the city is reopening ten public schools as warming centers, deploying school nurses for street outreach, and piloting a new program pairing formerly homeless individuals with outreach workers to encourage people to seek shelter. The mayor also announced the addition of 65 new hotel shelter units and two new CUNY warming centers, in partnership with Northwell Health.

"We're doing everything we can to keep our citizens safe," Mamdani said at a Friday afternoon briefing. "To those who may consider themselves more comfortable on the streets, I want to speak directly to you – come inside. These temperatures are too low and too dangerous to survive."

The city's crisis management system is mobilizing its network of violence interrupters and partnering with community organizations to deploy additional staff. Two overdose prevention centers will remain open 24 hours this weekend in response to the recent overdose-related deaths.

Outreach teams have made over 1,250 placements into shelters and safe havens since January 19, twice as many as the previous night. The city has also streamlined its 311 hotline, reducing the time it takes to reach a homeless assistance prompt from 1 minute and 20 seconds to roughly 40 seconds.

Mamdani acknowledged responsibility for the recent deaths, stating that as mayor, he is accountable for city actions across all five boroughs. "Each and every day is an opportunity to address any of the concerns we hear from New Yorkers," he said, reiterating his commitment to keeping citizens safe during this extreme weather event.

omg lol ther shud b a warming center in evry neighborhood!! its like 10 below zero out here nyc ppl r dyin 4 real!! mayor mamdani gotta step up his game tho we cant hv more ppl dyin on da streets 😩💔 i mean im all 4 help, but cmon! 65 new hotel shelter units? that aint enuf!! 🤯 nyc needs more than jus shelters, its bout havin da resources & da love 2 keep ppl safe thru dis harsh weather!! 🌡️❄️

omg can u believe its like -20 degrees outside in nyc?! 🤣 i was thinking bout how we always study in that kinda cold weather when were in like 5th grade at school and our science teacher would make us use those fancy thermometers to measure temp 😂 anyway, im so worried about all those ppl out there freezing their bums off 🥶 its like mayor mamdani is doing everything right by opening up schools as warming centers and stuff but u can't help feelin that more needs 2 be done 🤔 gotta stay safe n warm during this harsh weather snap 💡

🤔 This cold snap thingy? Sounds like a perfect excuse for them to get all control-happy on us 🤑 Like they're setting up warming centers and whatnot just so we don't have any "free time" to, say, investigate some suspicious activity that's really not connected to the weather ☃️. And have you noticed how suddenly 13 people died from hypothermia? That doesn't add up, if you ask me... like they're trying to cover something up 🚫. I mean, what about all those "outreach" teams popping up everywhere? Sounds like some kind of social engineering op to me 💻. Can't trust the official story around here...

🌨️ This cold snap is getting pretty dire. I'm not surprised 17 people have lost their lives already - the streets can be a harsh place, especially when it's freezing outside. But what really gets me is that we're seeing a lot of folks on the streets because they've fallen through the cracks. The city's doing its best to respond, but it's clear that this crisis goes deeper than just throwing more warming centers open.

I think it's great that Mamdani is acknowledging his role in all this - as mayor, he has a responsibility to keep New Yorkers safe, and it sounds like he's taking that seriously. But at the same time, we need to be thinking about what systemic changes can help prevent these kinds of situations in the first place. Is our shelter system adequate? Are we doing enough to support folks who are struggling with homelessness?

The fact that outreach teams have made over 1,250 placements into shelters since January is a good start, but I think it's also important to think about how we can make those connections more sustainable and less of a Band-Aid solution. This cold snap is a wake-up call, for sure - let's hope we can use it as an opportunity to come up with some real solutions. 💡

Ugh 17 people died outside in the cold already 🤕. Mayor says all hands on deck but it's too little too late for some ppl. I'm worried about the homeless ppl who can't afford hotel shelters 🏨. Warming centers should be more than just schools and hotels. What about ppl without heat at home? This ain't gonna be a pretty weekend ❄️

❄️ 10 below zero? That's crazy! 🤯 I'm not buying that it's 'lethal' cold. Like, how many degrees is lethal again? 0? -5? ❄️ It's just a bunch of hype to get people into those warming centers. I mean, what's the real motivation here? Is it really about keeping people safe or is it just about controlling who gets fed and housed?

I'm also skeptical about these 'warming center' schools being converted for this purpose. What if kids are stuck in classrooms instead of classes? And what about the logistics of heating up 17,000 kids with limited resources? 🤔 It sounds like a recipe for disaster.

And don't even get me started on the hotel shelter units and CUNY warming centers. How much is all this going to cost taxpayers? Is it just a PR stunt to make the mayor look good? 💸 I need some credible sources before I start believing that everything is being done out of the goodness of the city's heart 🤷‍♀️

omg can't believe how crazy it's gonna get in nyc this weekend 😱 temperatures are supposed to be like 10 below zero which is insane! at least the city is being super proactive and setting up all these warming centers tho 🙏 i mean, reopening public schools as shelters is genius 🤓 and they're also pairing homeless people with outreach workers which sounds like a really effective way to get them back on their feet 💪 plus they're adding more hotel shelter units which is awesome 🌟 i just wish more ppl would take advantage of these resources 😔 anyway, gotta give props to mayor mamdani for being all proactive and stuff 🙏

I'm no meteorologist, but I think 10 below zero is like my mood after eating a whole pizza by myself 🍕😴 - it's cold! But seriously, NYC needs to stay warm and cozy right now. I hope those warming centers are comfy and have good Wi-Fi so people can at least pass the time while they're waiting out the cold snap 😂. And I gotta ask, who needs a 311 hotline that works in like 40 seconds? Can't we just have a magic button that says " Send pizza and hot chocolate"? 🍕🥵

I feel so bad for those people who lose their lives outside in this kind of cold snap 😩. The city's warming centers and emergency measures seem like a good start, but it still feels like not enough is being done 🤔. I wish the mayor would also provide more funding to help people get off the streets permanently, rather than just temporarily escaping the cold ❄️. It's a complex issue, but we need to find more sustainable solutions 🌟.

omg u guys idk wut's goin on in nyc rn! 😱 they're expectin temps 2 drop 2 10 below zero!!! that's crazy!!! according 2 the stats 4 the past week, NYC has seen avg low of 27°f (still pretty chilly tho) but dis weekend it's gonna be -13°c which is like... way colder lol. anywayz, like 17 peeps already died outside during harsh weather 🤕 and now they're reopenin schools as warming centers & deployin nurses 2 do street outreach 🚑. also, they're addin new hotel shelter units & CUNY warming centers 🏠. the mayor's all about keepin citizens safe tho 💯 like, he's makin sure everyone knows dat even brief exposure 2 extreme cold can b deadly 💀. anyhooz, lets look at some stats 👀 - 1,250 placements into shelters since jan 19... that's a lot 🤯. and did u no they streamlined their 311 hotline? now it only takes like 40 secs 2 get assistance 📞.

oh no 🤕 this cold snap is crazy! 10 below zero? that's like, way too cold for anyone to be outside even for a sec 😷 i'm glad the city is stepping up with all these warming centers and emergency measures... it's about time we take care of our most vulnerable neighbors ❤️ those outreach teams making over 1k placements into shelters are doing some amazing work! 65 new hotel shelter units is also super welcome - more people need a safe place to go 🏨 but i do hope the city can learn from this and make sure it doesn't happen again... we've gotta get better at keeping our city safe, especially during extreme weather 🌡️

man, 17 people losing their lives in the snow is just heartbreaking 🤕. i'm all for them reopening schools as warming centers and hiring more staff to help those struggling with homelessness, but it's crazy how many ppl have gotta die before we take action 🚨. mayor mamdani seems pretty serious about getting things done tho 🙏. 10 public schools reopening is a good start, but i feel like there should be more on the table. what's up with the hotel shelter units, are those gonna stay open long-term or just for this weekend? also, how's the city planning to prevent ppl from overdosing in the first place? 🤔

omg what's going on in nyc?? 🤕 they're already saying it's lethal out there i mean 10 below zero is insane like can't even go outside without risking your life and they've already had 17 deaths which is just heartbreaking also the mayor is stepping up with warming centers and outreach programs but its still a lot of work to be done especially since homelessness is such a big issue here 🤝 i'm all for them trying to keep people safe but we need more permanent solutions too not just emergency fixes

Man, it's crazy how quickly things can take a turn for the worse in NYC 🤯. I've lived here my whole life and never seen anything like this - 10 below zero is just insane ❄️. The city's doing everything they can to help out, but it's clear that it's not just about the warmth centers and shelter units... it's about people feeling safe enough to come in off the streets 🚪. I'm worried about our seniors and those who are struggling with addiction - this cold snap is gonna be brutal 💔. The mayor's gotta get some credit for stepping up, though 👏. We need to make sure everyone knows they've got a support system in place if things take a turn for the worse 🤝. Fingers crossed it doesn't get any worse than it already has 😬

omg yaaas mayor mamdani is literally a lifesaver !! 😍 i'm so proud of him for taking action and being all hands on deck ❤️ those warming centers are gonna be a total game changer for people struggling to stay warm 🤩 can you even imagine having to spend the weekend outside in 10 below zero ❄️😲 thank god the city is stepping up and providing resources like hotel shelter units and CUNY warming centers 🏨👍 i just hope everyone gets the help they need and stays safe 🙏 the numbers of people being placed into shelters are amazing 📈 1,250 placements since jan 19th? that's incredible 🤯 let's keep spreading love and kindness to those in need ❤️

🚨😕 I'm worried about those people freezing outside on the streets, 10 below zero? That's crazy! 🤯 Our city needs more warming centers and stuff like that ASAP 📍💡. I feel for the ones who lost their lives already 😔. We gotta step up our game here, mayor's talking about all hands on deck but we need to see action 💪🏽. How many shelters are we really providing? Are they safe? 🤔 And what about those people who can't just pop into a hotel? Like homeless folks and all that 🌆. We gotta think bigger here, not just warm centers but actual solutions 🚧💡.

omg i cant even imagine bein out in that cold ❄️😱 17 ppl already lost their lives its just heartbreaking... i think the city is doin a great job preppin for this though, reopening those public schools as warming centers & deployin school nurses to outreach teams is genius 🤩. and yay for them addin more hotel shelter units & CUNY warmth centers! 💕 u can tell the mayor really cares about keepin his ppl safe & i love that he's acknowledgin responsibility 4 the deaths... we should all be cheerin him on 👏💪

I'm so worried about people who are gonna get hurt in this cold snap 🥶 It's like, I know some people might think they're okay on the streets, but it's just not true... 10 below zero is CRAZY! The city should've done more, like, sooner. All these warming centers and hotel shelter units sound nice, but what about the ones who don't want to go in? They gotta have a choice, you know?

And what's with all the overdoses too? It's like, one thing after another... 17 people lost their lives outside?! That's just devastating. The mayor's trying, I guess, but it feels like they're just patching things up instead of fixing the problem. What's gonna happen when this cold snap is over? Are we just gonna forget about all these people who were affected?

I don't know what else to say... it just seems so sad and avoidable 🤕
