NYC to quadruple intersections with red light cameras by end of year, officials say

New York City officials are set to quadruple its number of red-light camera installations to 600 by the end of the year, a move aimed at cracking down on reckless driving and reducing traffic accidents.

Currently operating at 150 intersections, the cameras will be rolled out to an additional 50 locations per week for the next five weeks, before eventually covering all proposed sites. The city's Transportation Commissioner, Mike Flynn, claims that this expansion is necessary to combat a major contributor to street safety: red light running.

According to Flynn, these cameras have been proven to significantly reduce accidents, with a 73% decrease in red-light-running incidents at intersections where they are installed. He also stated that the agency will be pairing its increased enforcement efforts with ambitious street redesigns to further enhance road safety.

The deployment of new cameras follows pressure from former Mayor Eric Adams and was made possible by a state law passed earlier this year, allowing for the installation of cameras at 600 intersections nationwide.

While officials are tight-lipped about the exact locations of new installations, they did confirm that targeted areas with high rates of crashes will be prioritized. Those caught running red lights can expect to receive a $50 ticket from the cameras.

City data suggests that the program is having a positive impact, with T-bone crashes decreasing by 65% and rear-end collisions by 49% at intersections equipped with the cameras. As for revenue generated by the program, $20 million in net income was secured in 2024, highlighting the financial benefits of increased enforcement.

By bolstering its red-light camera program and implementing street redesigns, New York City aims to significantly improve road safety and protect its citizens from reckless driving.

πŸ™„ I'm so sick of these cameras everywhere! I get it, accidents are a big deal, but do we really need 600 cameras?! It's just gonna make the city feel like a dystopian surveillance state πŸ•΅οΈβ€β™‚οΈ. And what about all those innocent people who just accidentally run red lights? They're not trying to cause trouble, they're just having a bad day πŸ˜’. I don't think $50 is a harsh enough fine for a single mistake. And have you seen the prices of tickets lately?! It's like they're just trolling us πŸ’Έ. Maybe instead of cameras, we should focus on improving our education system so people actually know how to drive safely πŸš—πŸ“š. This camera thing just feels like a Band-Aid solution to me...

I'm thinking about these new red light cameras... πŸ€” is it really that bad out there? I mean, 73% decrease in accidents at intersections with cameras sounds pretty good, but isn't it a bit invasive? Like, people might get fined for just having a split second of hesitation at an intersection. And what's the deal with the $50 tickets? Is it worth risking that to get to work or school on time? 🚫 I'm also curious about these 'ambitious street redesigns'... how much are they gonna cost and what kind of changes can we expect? Are they gonna make roads more bike-friendly or just more police-enforced? πŸ˜•

I don’t usually comment but I think it’s kinda weird that they’re gonna put cameras at 600 intersections... like, a lot of places πŸ€”. Is it really necessary to have cameras everywhere? Can't they just focus on the hotspots where accidents are most common? And what's with the $50 fine for running red lights? That seems kinda steep. I get that the city wants to reduce accidents and all, but do they need to generate so much revenue from it too? πŸ€‘

🚨 I'm all for it! πŸ™Œ Those cameras are a game-changer, especially with the numbers showing a 73% decrease in red-light-running incidents. It's crazy how much of a difference they can make. Plus, the city is being proactive about prioritizing areas with high crash rates - that makes so much sense. The fact that revenue is also coming in from these cameras is just icing on the cake! πŸ’Έ I'm curious to see how this program will shape up and what kind of impact it'll have on road safety overall...

I think this is a super reasonable idea πŸ™Œ. I mean, who doesn't want to feel safe while crossing the street or walking with their kids? As a parent, it's always my worry when my little ones are out and about on their own. And yeah, 73% decrease in red-light-running incidents is no joke! It just makes so much sense that cameras would help reduce accidents. Plus, pairing it with street redesigns sounds like a win-win for both road safety and the community. $20 million in net income? That's awesome too! πŸ’Έ I'm all for seeing more of these cameras popping up around town, especially in areas with high crash rates. It's not about being "ticked off" or anything, it's just about making sure our streets are safe for everyone πŸš—πŸ’•

omg i cant even imagine driving through nyc without those cameras lol! 🀯πŸ’₯ 600 is a lot but id rather be safe than sorry u know? πŸ˜… the numbers are crazy tho - 73% decrease in accidents at intersections with cameras? that's insane! πŸ’₯ i guess it makes sense that they'd prioritize areas with high crash rates, gotta protect those NYC citizens πŸ™. and $20 million in revenue? yeah please, take all the $$$ πŸ˜‚ can't wait to see how this all plays out πŸ‘€

omg u guyz, im so down w/ nycs plan to add more red light cams!!! πŸš«πŸ“Έ i mean, who doesnt wanna be safe on the roads? i read that theyve already seen a 73% decrease in red light runnin incidents @ intersections where the cameras are installed... thats straight fire πŸ”₯! and lets not forget about the $20 million in revenue they made last yr πŸ€‘ its def worth it if its gonna keep ppl safe. plus, theyre makin some changes to the streets too, like redesigns... thats all good in my book πŸ’―

ugh, great idea, NYC... just what we all needed - more cameras watching our every move πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ. i mean, who doesn't love the feeling of being tracked 24/7 by a mechanical eye? and let's be real, $50 is basically a cost of doing business when you're already paying upwards of $3 per gallon for gas πŸ’Έ. meanwhile, they're hoping to increase revenue... because that's exactly what we need - more money to fix the roads after they're already clogged from all the cars being slowed down by red lights πŸš—πŸ˜’. at least the data says it's working... but you can bet there are going to be a lot of lawyers on speed dial when people start contesting these tickets πŸ“πŸ‘Š

idk if these cameras r really making a diff... ive seen ppl get fined from them & they just end up being super frustrated πŸ€”... like whats the point of giving em a $50 ticket? its not gonna stop 'em from runnin red lights in the 1st place... plus, there r always ways to cheat the system... i'm all for improving road safety but these cameras just seem like another way to make some extra cash πŸ€‘

πŸš¦πŸ‘€ So I'm thinking, is a 73% decrease in red-light-running incidents really that crazy? πŸ€” Like, what are the stats on the cameras' accuracy? Are they catching all the guilty drivers or just picking up low-hanging fruit? πŸ˜’ And what about the cameras' placement? Are we talking random intersections or targeted areas with specific traffic patterns? Don't get me wrong, I'm all for safer roads, but I want to see some hard numbers before I get on board with this massive expansion. πŸ’Έ

I don’t usually comment but thought this expansion makes sense πŸ€”. I mean, it’s all about keeping the streets safe right? A 73% decrease in red-light-running incidents is pretty impressive, especially with T-bone crashes decreasing by 65%. It's clear that the cameras are doing something right πŸ’‘. Plus, with the state law allowing for more installations, it's a win-win for both road safety and the city's revenue πŸ€‘. Not to mention, pairing enforcement efforts with street redesigns is a smart move πŸ—ΊοΈ. Let's hope this program continues to yield positive results and keeps our streets safer πŸ‘

πŸš¨πŸ“ΈπŸ”΄β€β™‚οΈ 600 cameras = more speeding tickets for you πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ! 73% reduction in accidents means fewer near-misses... but will it lead to a 73% increase in speeding fines? πŸ’ΈπŸ˜³

just thinkin... cameras can be a good thing πŸ“Έ, but have they thought about the people who are really struggling to afford those $50 tickets? like, what if you're not even speeding, just got there too late? shouldn't we focus on helpin' them out instead of finin' 'em?

ugh i dont get why they need so many cameras everywhere... it feels like youre being watched all the time 🀯🚨. i mean, yeah, maybe it helps reduce accidents but have you seen how many cameras are already up? its like we're living in a sci-fi movie or something πŸ€–. and what about the cost? $20 million is nothing compared to all these cameras that will be added... thats just gonna raise more money for the city πŸ’Έ. i wish they could just find a better way to address reckless driving without resorting to all this tech πŸ“Š.

OMG you guys 🀯 I'm so down for more cameras on our streets! Like, who doesn't want fewer accidents? But, at the same time, I got some concerns about this whole thing... Like, what's up with all these cameras? Are they really gonna make a difference? I mean, we're talkin' 600 cameras in one city - that's like, a whole lotta eyes on the road πŸ€”. And what about people who can't afford that $50 ticket? Are we just gonna be nickel and diming people for tryin' to get home safely?

And don't even get me started on the design changes... Like, I'm all for makin' our streets safer, but are these redesigns really gonna make a difference? We've seen it before - new designs come out, traffic accidents decrease... only for us to forget about 'em and go back to our old ways πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ.

But hey, I guess if it's workin', why not? πŸ’― The numbers are lookin' good right now, so I'm def down for more enforcement. Just hope they're doin' this the right way, ya know? No profiling or discriminatin' - just straight-up road safety πŸš—πŸ’•

🚨 Red-light cameras are definitely becoming super common in NYC! Like, I know some people might think it's a bit invasive or whatever, but the stats show that they're actually doing a solid job of cutting down on accidents πŸ“‰ 73% decrease? That's crazy! And I'm all for safer roads. The new installations will be rolled out pretty fast, so who knows what other improvements we'll see soon? Maybe some more pedestrian-friendly zones or bike lanes? πŸš΄β€β™€οΈ Fingers crossed that the city is doing its part to reduce congestion and make traveling around the city a breeze 😊

πŸš—πŸ’‘ I'm all for it! Those cameras have been doing some magic on our roads already - 73% decrease in red light running? That's huge! 🀯 And I love that they're targeting areas with high crash rates, it makes total sense to prioritize safety. The idea of pairing enforcement efforts with street redesigns is genius too... who doesn't want to see safer roads and less traffic jams? 😌 Plus, the fact that we can expect to make some serious cash from the program ($20 million last year) means there's gotta be a good reason for it! Let's just hope they don't become too invasive... but I'm willing to take the chance if it means less reckless driving on our streets. πŸ™

πŸš¨πŸ‘€ NYC's gonna lock down our roads with these cameras! πŸ’Έ I'm not sure if it's a good thing or just more cash for the city, but 73% less red light runs is def a win πŸ™Œ

just heard about this - think it's a good move πŸ€”. quadrupling the number of cameras will definitely make streets safer for all drivers... and pedestrians too! πŸšΆβ€β™€οΈπŸš¦ 73% decrease in red-light running incidents is huge, especially with more aggressive drivers on the road lately πŸš—πŸ’¨. it's awesome that they're pairing enforcement efforts with redesigns to improve overall safety. and $20 million net income is a nice bonus too πŸ’ΈπŸ‘. but what about the cost of cameras? is it worth it? think so, but we should keep an eye on how it's being spent πŸ€”πŸ“Š
