Readers judge Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, and Jimmy Fallon’s Mass. town pronunciations

Massachusetts town names are notoriously tricky to pronounce, even for the well-intentioned. On "The Tonight Show," three guys from Boston took it upon themselves to try their hand at reciting every city and town in Massachusetts. The results were a mixed bag, with some readers praising their efforts and others being left scratching their heads.

Of the over 100 readers who responded to a Boston.com poll, 68% said yes, their hometown was pronounced correctly by Damon, Affleck, or Fallon, while 32% said no way. Many readers appreciated the trio's enthusiasm and effort, but some were quick to point out glaring mistakes.

Quincy, of course, was the town that sparked the most debate. One reader quipped, "Yeah, they kind of did Quincy dirty," noting that Damon's pronunciation made a movie starring John and Abigail Adams sound like a real thing. Another reader pointed out that Fallon got it wrong, saying it's actually pronounced "Quinzee."

Even among readers who thought the trio did well overall, some expressed frustration with specific mistakes. Tom M from Amherst was particularly vocal about Affleck's pronunciation of Amherst as "Am-herst" – he insisted on the correct pronunciation being "Am-erst." Donovan from Uxbridge had a similar gripe with Damon's pronunciation of Oxbridge.

Despite some notable missteps, many readers enjoyed the segment and appreciated its lighthearted take on Massachusetts town names. One reader noted that Fallon's attempt at saying Leicester was impressive, and another said she loved seeing the guys get "Leominster" right.

The poll results also revealed some interesting insights into local pride and knowledge. Mary R from Methuen praised Matt Damon for correctly pronouncing her hometown, while Kerri from Woburn pointed out that Fallon got it wrong – he pronounced it as Woo-burn instead of Woo-bin (which is actually the pronunciation used in Cambridge).

The segment may have taught some readers new things about Massachusetts towns they'd never heard of. A reader named Charlotte M from Salisbury mentioned discovering a town called Peru, while another reader noted seeing Ashburnham for the first time.

Overall, it's clear that even with their best efforts, Damon, Affleck, and Fallon still managed to get some Massachusetts town names wrong. But hey, at least they tried – and many readers appreciated their enthusiasm and willingness to learn about the quirks of local pronunciation.

come on guys 🙄, i mean idk what they were going for with that boston segment, Damon's pronunciation of quincy was straight up awful 💀 like, it sounds like a made-up movie title or something. and don't even get me started on Affleck's attempt at amherst - "am-herst" is literally just wrong 🙄. but i guess the good thing is that they tried, and it's kinda funny to see them flailing around trying to say all those weird town names 🤣. also, who knew leominster was actually pronounceable by Fallon? 😂 that was a nice surprise. overall, it's clear that even with their best efforts, they still managed to get some things wrong, but at least they were willing to learn and have fun with it 🤓

I gotta say... I was chuckling my way through that Boston.com poll on "The Tonight Show" segment 🤣. Three guys from Boston trying to pronounce all 100+ Massachusetts towns? That's just too funny 😂. But what really surprised me is how passionate some people got about their hometowns and the correct pronunciation of each town. I mean, I get it, local pride and all that 🙏.

I did find it hilarious when Matt Damon's Quincy pronouncement made everyone go "wait, what?" 😳, but at the same time, you gotta give those guys credit for trying 💪. And Fallon getting it wrong on Leicester? Oh man, that was a good laugh 🤣. But what really stood out to me is how it brought out some interesting insights about local knowledge and pride. Maybe next time they should just stick to a list of the top 10 most common towns in MA 🤷‍♂️.

omg i'm dying over quincy lol it's pronounced quin-zee not quincy 🤣 i think it's kinda funny that some ppl got so mad about it though idk what's more annoying is affleck saying am-herst instead of am-erst 😂 anyway, i love how the guys from boston tried their best to recite all the towns but yeah some of them got it wrong 🤦‍♂️ can u imagine if they did a segment on missouri towns? that'd be so much fun!

I gotta say, I'm entertained by these guys trying to pronounce all those Mass towns 🤣. It's hilarious how much people take it personally when they mess up some name. Like, dude, it's just a town, not the end of the world 😂. Quincy is wild, though - I mean, who tries to say Adams like it's a real movie? 🎬 And Fallon getting Oxbridge wrong is no biggie either, it's actually "Ox-bridj" anyway 🙄. But for real, it's cool that some people got to learn new town names and appreciate the guys' effort. Maybe next time they should just stick to reading off a list 📝.

I'm just gonna say, I love how enthusiastic those guys from Boston were about trying to pronounce all those Massachusetts towns! 🤣 It's gotta be hard to get 'em all right, especially when you're not from around here. I mean, Quincy is like, super tricky - one guy said it sounded like a John and Abigail Adams movie, lol. And poor Damon got Oxbridge (from Cambridge) totally wrong... Am-herst vs Am-erst, dude! 😂 But seriously, I think it's awesome that they tried, and some of the readers were actually really cool about pointing out mistakes - I love how one guy was like "yeah, you kinda messed up Quincy, bro". 🤷‍♂️ Overall, it's all good, 'cause at least we learned something new from those guys!

I don’t usually comment but I gotta say, it's pretty funny watching those guys try to pronounce all those Massachusetts towns! Like, Quincy is a tough one 😂. And yeah, "Quinzee" sounds way more accurate than whatever Damon was going for. On the other hand, I feel bad for Tom M from Amherst - poor guy was just trying to correct Affleck's mistake 🙄. But in all seriousness, it's awesome that they even tried to give it a shot!

I gotta say, trying to pronounce all those Massachusetts towns is like trying to do a puzzle blindfolded while being attacked by a swarm of bees 🐝😂. I mean, Damon, Ben Affleck, and Jimmy Fallon, you guys are hilarious! And yeah, it's clear they got some names wrong (I was laughing my butt off when I saw Quincy get butchered 😂), but at least you're willing to learn from your mistakes.

And oh man, the comments section is like a funhouse mirror – some people are super nitpicky about pronunciations, while others just appreciate the lighthearted vibe 🤣. Like, come on, guys, it's just Boston town names! They can't all be perfect (although I'm pretty sure Matt Damon would get Amherst right by now if he practiced enough 💪).

But you know what they say – practice makes perfect? Maybe the next time they do a segment, they'll have some local residents practicing their pronunciation skills with them 🤓. And hey, at least it's entertaining to watch!

I'm dead 🤣, I mean, these guys from Boston trying to recite all those Massachusetts towns? It's like watching a train wreck in slow motion 😂. You've got 3A's getting it right, but then someone's like "Uh, no, that's not how you pronounce Oxford" 🙄. And don't even get me started on Quincy - I mean, come on guys, just Google it beforehand 🤦‍♂️. But for real though, I love the effort and the energy they brought to it. It's all in good fun, right? 😊

You know, I think this whole thing is a reminder that practice makes perfect 🤓. Those guys from Boston were trying their best to recite all these town names, but they're still not 100% sure – and that's okay! We can all learn from our mistakes and appreciate the effort.

It also shows us how important it is to listen and understand others' perspectives. When Tom M pointed out Affleck's mistake with Amherst, he wasn't trying to be mean or critical; he was just sharing his own knowledge and expertise. And Kerri did the same thing with Fallon – she shared her own perspective on how to pronounce Woburn.

Ultimately, it's about being open-minded, willing to learn, and embracing our imperfections 😊. So even if Damon, Affleck, and Fallon didn't get all the town names right, they still showed us that we can laugh at ourselves, try new things, and appreciate each other's quirks 👍

I think the guys from Boston did a pretty good job tryin' to pronounce all those towns - I mean, who wouldn't wanna see Matt Damon give it a shot? And yeah, Quincy is definitely one that's got people divided, but can we even blame 'em for gettin' it wrong? It's not like they're gonna practice pronouncin' it every day or somethin' 😂. I also think it's pretty cool that some readers pointed out all the mistakes and helped others learn how to pronounce their hometowns correctly - like, Donovan from Uxbridge is totally right about Oxbridge bein' pronounced "Ox-bride" 🙌.

😊 I gotta say, i'm a little disappointed in the guys from Boston trying to tackle those MASSIVE town names 🤯. Like, who tries to recite 100+ places? It's not just about pronouncing 'em right, it's about showing respect for the locals and their histories. But at the same time, i gotta give props to Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, and Jimmy Fallon for trying 💪. And omg, that Quincy vs Quinzee thing is still giving me life 😂. I'm glad some readers were willing to poke fun at the mistakes and just appreciate the effort 💕. We should all be more supportive of each other's quirks, even when it comes to silly things like town names 🌎💖

🤣 OMG I'm dying over Quincy!!! Like, who pronounces it like a real movie? 😂 And then there's Amherst... "Am-herst" vs "Am-erst"... come on guys! 🙄 But you know what? It's all in good fun and I love how Matt Damon gave Methuen a shoutout for getting his hometown right. That's what it's all about - having a laugh and learning something new. And can we talk about Fallon's attempt at saying Leicester? Impressive! 😂👏

idk how these guys from boston think they can pronounce all those towns right lol, like they even tried 🤣 i mean, who pronounces Quincy like "Quinzee" tho? sounds like a new type of pizza place 🍕 quincy, not quinzee! and affleck said amherst wrong, umm nope, it's "Am-erst", bruv 🙄

lol @ those guys tryin' to tackle Mass towns 🤣, I gotta feel for 'em, but also kinda love that they're willin' to get roasted 😂, like when Affleck butchered Amherst, I was dyin' over here... "Am-herst" no way, buddy! 🙅‍♂️ but on a serious note, I think it's awesome that they brought some lighthearted attention to this crazy topic, and who knows, maybe some people learned somethin' new about their hometowns 🤓, like that Peru in Salisbury is a real deal town 🎉... anywayz, kudos to the trio for givin' it a shot, even if they didn't get 'em all right 😊

OMG 🤣, I'm dyin' laughin' over this!!! So like, three guys from Boston try recite all the cities & towns in MA and it's a total hot mess 😂🤦‍♂️! But you know what? I love that they're tryin', fam 💪! Those mistakes are just part of the charm 🎉. And omg Quincy, am i rite? 😂 Damon's pronounciation made John & Abigail Adams sound like movie stars or somethin' 🤣! Anywayz, props to Fallon for gettin' Leicester right 👏 and those readers who appreciated the lighthearted vibe 🌞. And btw, I'm so with Kerri from Woburn on Fallon's Woo-burn mistake 😂🙅‍♀️. All in all, it's all good fam 💕!

omg u gotta love how enthusiastic those guys from Boston were on "The Tonight Show" 🤣 trying to pronounce every city & town in Massachusetts lol i think its kinda funny that some ppl r actually passionate about how u say their hometown name like, dont get me wrong i appreciate the effort but sometimes u just gotta laugh at urself 🤦‍♀️, thats what made the whole segment so entertaining! i also loved seeing ppl from different towns getting all worked up over pronunciations, its pretty funny 😂 and yeah, some of those mistakes were pretty wild lol like who knew there was a town called Peru?!? 🌟

😊 I gotta say, I love how enthusiastic those guys from Boston were trying to recite all those crazy Mass town names 🤣 It's adorable that they're just like us - we struggle with these too! I mean, I knew some of them were gonna get it wrong, but it was fun watching 😂. Quincy being the worst, though... Quincy is a tough one (for me, at least). But honestly, even when they got it wrong, I appreciated their effort to learn and try again 💪 And hey, who knows? Maybe next time they'll nail it 🤞.
