Students at Senn High School organized a schoolwide walkout against immigration policy and ICE tactics, with dozens of students participating in the protest outside their school.
The group gathered at the intersection of Clark Street and Ridge Avenue, holding signs and flags calling for an end to immigration enforcement activity. Cars driving past the intersection honked their horns in support of the students' message.
According to junior Julia McGuire, who was part of the student organizers, they found out about the planned walkout through social media posts from classmates and decided on a date when they thought most teachers would be supportive.
While some teachers were "iffy" and reminded students to do their work, many were more supportive of the students' efforts. The school administration worked with student organizers to ensure safety measures were in place during the walkout.
The Senn High School walkout is part of a growing trend at other Chicago Public Schools, including Mather, Northside College Prep, Roosevelt, Amundsen, and Von Steuben high schools, which have all lent their voices to the immigrant cause.
