New Big Five: Wildlife Photography Book Highlights Animals on Brink of Extinction
A new photography book, "The New Big Five," is out now, featuring stunning images of five animals at risk of extinction. The project was conceived by British photographer Graeme Green, who wants to use the power of wildlife photography to raise awareness about the plight of endangered species.
Green's idea for a "New Big Five" emerged during his time in Botswana over a decade ago. He wanted to encourage people to "shoot with a camera, not a gun," and thought that by doing so, they would focus more on wildlife and think about the animals at risk.
The five animals chosen as the "New Big Five" are elephants, polar bears, lions, gorillas, and tigers. These animals were selected after 50,000 people around the world voted for their favorite species to photograph or see in the wild.
The book features photographs taken by renowned wildlife photographers such as Ami Vitale, Steve McCurry, and Paul Nicklen, alongside essays from famous conservationists like Jane Goodall and Paula Kahumbu. The images showcase the beauty and majesty of these animals, while also highlighting the alarming threat they face due to habitat loss, poaching, pollution, and climate change.
According to Green, the book is a global call to action on issues impacting wildlife. "I think these are some of the most beautiful and creative images that I've seen put together in one book," he says. The images also act as ambassadors for what's happening in the natural world, serving as a reminder of what we stand to lose if we don't take action.
One of the key messages conveyed by the book is the urgent need for conservation efforts. Climate change poses an alarming threat not only to the "New Big Five" but also to thousands of other species worldwide. Jane Goodall notes that "we have a window of time during which we can start to heal some of the harm we have inflicted on the natural world, but only if we get together and take action now."
"The New Big Five: A Global Photography Project For Endangered Wildlife" is published by Earth Aware Editions and will be on sale from April 4, 2023. The book's publication coincides with a growing awareness of the need for urgent conservation action to protect wildlife and the planet.
As the world grapples with environmental challenges, "The New Big Five" offers a powerful reminder of the importance of protecting our planet's precious biodiversity. By showcasing stunning images of endangered species, this book inspires us to take action and join the fight to preserve wildlife for future generations.
