New Big Five: Wildlife Photography Book Highlights Animals on Brink of Extinction

A new photography book, "The New Big Five," is out now, featuring stunning images of five animals at risk of extinction. The project was conceived by British photographer Graeme Green, who wants to use the power of wildlife photography to raise awareness about the plight of endangered species.

Green's idea for a "New Big Five" emerged during his time in Botswana over a decade ago. He wanted to encourage people to "shoot with a camera, not a gun," and thought that by doing so, they would focus more on wildlife and think about the animals at risk.

The five animals chosen as the "New Big Five" are elephants, polar bears, lions, gorillas, and tigers. These animals were selected after 50,000 people around the world voted for their favorite species to photograph or see in the wild.

The book features photographs taken by renowned wildlife photographers such as Ami Vitale, Steve McCurry, and Paul Nicklen, alongside essays from famous conservationists like Jane Goodall and Paula Kahumbu. The images showcase the beauty and majesty of these animals, while also highlighting the alarming threat they face due to habitat loss, poaching, pollution, and climate change.

According to Green, the book is a global call to action on issues impacting wildlife. "I think these are some of the most beautiful and creative images that I've seen put together in one book," he says. The images also act as ambassadors for what's happening in the natural world, serving as a reminder of what we stand to lose if we don't take action.

One of the key messages conveyed by the book is the urgent need for conservation efforts. Climate change poses an alarming threat not only to the "New Big Five" but also to thousands of other species worldwide. Jane Goodall notes that "we have a window of time during which we can start to heal some of the harm we have inflicted on the natural world, but only if we get together and take action now."

"The New Big Five: A Global Photography Project For Endangered Wildlife" is published by Earth Aware Editions and will be on sale from April 4, 2023. The book's publication coincides with a growing awareness of the need for urgent conservation action to protect wildlife and the planet.

As the world grapples with environmental challenges, "The New Big Five" offers a powerful reminder of the importance of protecting our planet's precious biodiversity. By showcasing stunning images of endangered species, this book inspires us to take action and join the fight to preserve wildlife for future generations.

aww man 🤕 thinkin bout these gorgeous animals goin down & it breaks my heart 😔 we gotta take action 4 their survival 🌎 climate change is like a superpower that's destroyin our planet & all its creatures 💥 need more ppl to get behind conservation efforts & support orgs workin 2 protect wildlife 🐠🦁🌳

🤦‍♂️ can't believe they're just now doing a "New Big Five" photography project after all these years. I mean, I get that people want to raise awareness about endangered species, but this feels like a bandaid solution rather than actual policy change 🙄. What's the point of taking beautiful photos if we're not gonna do something concrete to help these animals? 📸🐯

And 50,000 people voting on which animals to feature? That's just a popularity contest 🤔. Can't they have used scientific data or conservation organizations' expertise instead? It feels like a publicity stunt rather than a serious effort to address the issue 🎉.

I also don't get why they're choosing these specific five animals 🤷‍♂️. What about the rhinos, the pangolins, or the vaquita? Don't those species deserve some love too? It's like they're just cherry-picking the cute and charismatic ones 🐻.

All in all, I'd have liked to see more substance behind this project rather than just a bunch of pretty pictures 📚.

omg i'm literally so emotional just reading about these animals 🐘💔, like elephants are still being poached in some parts of africa and it's heartbreaking 🤕, and polar bears are struggling with climate change and melting ice 🌊😱, lions are losing their habitats and it's just... ugh 😩, gorillas are getting extinct at an alarming rate due to habitat loss and disease 🐒😷, and tigers are being hunted for their skin and body parts 💀🔪. i mean we need to take action now or these amazing animals will be GONE 🌪️💥. and it's not just about them, climate change is affecting EVERYTHING 🌎💦. i'm literally so done with humans ruining the planet 🤯😩.

🌟 The whole thing is just so... polarizing 🤔. I mean, on one hand, you've got these gorgeous photos of animals on the brink of extinction, and it's hard not to feel a sense of urgency and responsibility to act. But then, you start thinking about the global implications of conservation efforts and how they're often tied up in politics and economic interests 💸.

I'm not saying that's necessarily a bad thing, but it does make me wonder: who gets to decide which species get prioritized for protection? Is it just the "New Big Five" or are there other animals out there fighting for survival? 🤷‍♀️ And what about the economic interests at play here? Are we talking about saving endangered species as a way to boost eco-tourism, or is it really about preserving biodiversity for its own sake?

It's like, we're supposed to be celebrating the beauty of these animals, but are we also acknowledging the systemic issues that led them to this point in the first place? 🌎 I guess what I'm saying is that "The New Big Five" feels like a call to action, but it's also important to have some tough conversations about the complexities and nuances involved. 💡

🌳💥 I'm so done with how fast we're losing these incredible creatures! Elephants, polar bears, lions, gorillas, and tigers - they're all on the brink of extinction because of our reckless behavior 🤯. Climate change is killing them, pollution is poisoning them, and habitat loss is destroying their homes 🌪️. It's like, we need to wake up, fam! Jane Goodall is right, we've got a window of time to fix this, but only if we get together and take action 💪. We can't just keep posting about how cute animals are on social media while doing absolutely nothing about their plight 📱🐰. This book is more than just pretty pics - it's a wake-up call 🔔. We need to do better, folks!

📚💧 I think it's so cool that Graeme Green came up with the idea of a "New Big Five" to raise awareness about endangered animals 🐘🐻🦁. I mean, who wouldn't want to look at gorgeous pics of elephants, polar bears, and tigers? 🤩 But seriously, it's awesome that the people involved in this project are using their talents to highlight the plight of these amazing creatures and the impact of human actions on the environment.

I love how Jane Goodall's words are included in the book - she's so right about us having a chance to "start to heal some of the harm we have inflicted" if we take action now 🌎💪. And I think it's so important that this book is out there to inspire people to care more about wildlife and conservation 🐾❤️.

I'm definitely gonna check out this book and share it with friends - hope it makes a difference in raising awareness and inspiring change!

idk why ppl dont care about these animals 🐘🐻... like, elephants r on brink of extinction bc of habitat loss & poaching 🌳😔 but its not just them, all 5 animals are in trouble cuz of climate change 🌪️& pollution 🤢. we need to take action now or its too late 🕰️... im talkin bout conservation efforts, ppl! 🐝🌿 lets work together to save these amazing creatures & the planet 🌎💚

I'm literally shaking rn just thinking about all these animals on the brink of extinction 🐒💔. I mean what can we do? It's not like we're just going to sit back and let them disappear 🤷‍♂️. We need more people to care, you know? Like, this book is a good start, but we need more than just pictures to make a difference 📸. We need action, real change. I wish the world would come together like Jane Goodall says and just take action already 🙏. It's not too late, right? But if we don't... *shudders* 🐳😩

📸💚 I'm so stoked about this new photography book "The New Big Five"! 🎉 It's like, we need more awareness about the animals that are struggling to survive due to habitat loss and climate change. The fact that 50,000 people around the world voted for their favorite species to photograph or see in the wild is so cool! 🤯 I mean, who doesn't love a good wildlife photo? But seriously, it's awesome that Graeme Green came up with this idea to use photography as a way to raise awareness and inspire action. The images are stunning and the essays from Jane Goodall and Paula Kahumbu are like, so powerful and thought-provoking! 🌟 We need more books like this one to remind us of the importance of conservation and protecting our planet's biodiversity. Let's all do our part to reduce our carbon footprint and support organizations that work towards wildlife preservation. 💚

🌟 just saw this thread about "The New Big Five" photography book... 50k people voted for their favorite animals 🤯 can you believe it? anyway, i think its cool that its not just a bunch of pretty pictures, theres actually a message to the conservation efforts and the impact of climate change on wildlife. some of these images are stunning though! 📸

man this is so sad 🤕 these animals are literally on the brink of extinction can't believe we're putting them through all this pollution climate change habitat loss... it's just heartbreaking seeing the pictures of these majestic creatures struggling to survive 🐒😭 gotta do something about this, like now! we can make a difference if we come together and support conservation efforts 🌎💚

can't believe how much extinction is on our plates rn 🐘🐻 it's wild (get it? like a lion?) that we're talkin' about these animals in 2025 and they're still at risk due to human activities 🌎 climate change, pollution, poaching... it's a no-brainer that we need to step up our conservation game 🏋️‍♀️. the photography is stunning btw, it really brings home the beauty and majesty of these animals... but also the harsh reality of their plight 📸. we gotta take action now, or else we'll be sayin' goodbye to some amazing species 👋.

I'm all for raising awareness about endangered animals 🦁🌳, but I gotta say, it feels kinda superficial to be "calling to action" with a photography book that's already been around for a decade... don't get me wrong, the pics are stunning and all, but what's the actual plan of action? Are we just gonna keep voting for more wildlife books instead of taking real steps to conserve habitats? 🤔

And can we talk about the fact that it takes 50k people "voting" on which animals to feature in this book? Like, isn't that just a popularity contest? Shouldn't we be putting conservation efforts above public opinion? 📸🌟

🌟 I'm so down for this project! It's about time we focus on these amazing animals that are struggling to survive. I mean, have you seen the pictures in this book? Mind blown! 🤯 It's not just about the animals themselves, but also about the impact of our actions on the planet. Climate change is real, and it's up to us to make a difference. I love how Graeme Green came up with this idea - using photography as a tool for conservation is genius! 📸 We need more people like him speaking out and raising awareness about these issues. Let's get behind this project and support the cause! 💪

🌟 I'm so hyped about this new photography book "The New Big Five" 📚! It's amazing how powerful a picture can be in raising awareness about these incredible animals that are struggling to survive due to human activities 🐘💔. Graeme Green is totally right, wildlife photography has the ability to inspire people and spark change 🔥. And I love that 50,000 people around the world came together to choose which species to feature - it's a testament to the impact we can have when we work together 🌈.

I'm also loving all the big names behind this project - Jane Goodall and Paula Kahumbu are total legends in their fields 💪. And can I just say, the images are STUNNING 🤩! This book is more than just a photography collection, it's a call to action for us all to take responsibility for protecting our planet's precious biodiversity 🌎. So let's get behind this project and support conservation efforts - we can make a difference if we work together 💕!

I just saw this new book and it's actually pretty eye opening 🤯. I mean, who knew we had a "New Big Five" at risk like that? It's crazy to think about how quickly they're disappearing due to our actions on the planet. As a wildlife enthusiast myself (i've got a sick collection of animal pics on my phone 📸), it really hits home how important conservation is. The photos in this book are insane - I mean, have you seen Ami Vitale's work? 🤯 Anyway, I think what I love most about this project is that it's not just a bunch of pretty pictures, but actually a call to action. We need to take responsibility for the harm we've caused and start making changes now. Climate change is real and it's not going away... let's hope we can all do our part 🌎💚

😊 I just read about this new photography book that showcases animals on the brink of extinction and it really got me thinking... we need more people like Graeme Green who's passionate about raising awareness through their work 📸. It's so important that we focus on conservation efforts, especially with climate change affecting so many species worldwide 🌎. I mean, have you seen the pictures from Ami Vitale and Steve McCurry? Stunning! 🤯 But what really gets me is Jane Goodall's message about having a window of time to heal some of the harm we've inflicted on nature... it's a call to action that we can't ignore 🕰️. We need more people like her who's willing to take bold steps towards change 💪.

this project is so cool 📸🐾 i love how graeme green brought together all these amazing photographers and conservationists to raise awareness about our planet's most vulnerable animals 🌎 elephants, polar bears, lions, gorillas, and tigers are just incredible creatures that deserve our protection. the book is a great reminder of how beautiful nature is, but also how fragile it can be if we don't take care of it 🌿 conservation efforts are so important right now, especially with climate change affecting all species worldwide 🌟 i hope this book inspires people to get out there and make a difference in protecting our planet's precious wildlife 🌸💚

🌳😔 these animals are literally on fire out here... climate change is no joke 🚨💥 it's crazy how much time we're running out to make a difference... 50,000 people can't be wrong about this being a huge issue... but what's the plan, you know? just taking pictures isn't gonna cut it 💔 gotta take real action 💪
