The Virgins review – a tornado of gossip, pretence and pain as teens make Friday night sex night

A Tornado of Gossip and Pretence: Teens' First Night Out Ends in Pain

In Miriam Battye's harrowing play, The Virgins, a group of teenager friends, all virgins, embark on their highly anticipated first night out. What ensues is a toxic cocktail of gossip, pretence, and pain, as they try to navigate the complex world of relationships and sex.

The evening begins with Chloe (Anushka Chakravarti) and Jess (Ella Bruccoleri), two best friends who have decided it's time to "go out out" – a euphemism for their first night of partying. Joined by Phoebe, a friend prone to panic at the mere mention of men, they prepare to meet Anya (Zoë Armer), a girl from the year above who promises to teach them the ways of love and sex.

As the night wears on, the group's dynamic becomes increasingly tense, with Chloe trying to impress Anya by fabricating stories about her relationships. Meanwhile, Phoebe's anxiety reaches boiling point as she tries to avoid any unwanted attention from the boys next door, who are engrossed in video games.

Battye's script is a masterclass in capturing the awkwardness and uncertainty of adolescence. The girls' conversations are stilted and guarded, like they're discussing wild animals – a metaphor that rings all too true. As Anya hands out advice, it becomes clear that sexual experience is currency in this world, with Chloe desperate to assert her power and independence.

The play's use of dramatic orchestral music creates a sense of unease, mirroring the characters' discomfort as they navigate their relationships. The stage drops into darkness between scenes, leaving the audience gasping for breath as the lights return, poised on the edge of a cliff.

Despite some plot threads left unexplained, Battye's strength lies in writing scenes that feel authentically raw and honest. If you've lived through nights like these, The Virgins will land uncomfortably close to home – a reminder that adolescence can be a painful and formative experience.

omg u guys i just saw this play "the virgins" and it was SO relatable 🤯💖 it's about a group of teenagers trying to navigate relationships and sex for the first time and it's like they're speaking my language 😂👀 the way they describe their conversations as "stilted and guarded" is literally me describing my own high school experiences 🤷‍♀️ i loved how the playwright captured the awkwardness and uncertainty of adolescence, it's like they were watching our lives unfold on stage 🎥 anyway i think what resonated with me most was how sex became this currency for these girls, it's wild to think about how much power and independence can be tied to someone else's experience 💸🔑

🤯 I'm tellin' ya, this play is more than just a story about teenagers on their first night out... there's somethin' deeper goin' on here. Like, have you noticed how Chloe's always tryin' to one-up Anya with these fake stories? It's like she's tryin' to prove somethin', but what is it exactly? And don't even get me started on Phoebe's anxiety... that girl's got some serious trust issues. 🤕 Meanwhile, the music is like this ominous soundtrack that's just buildin' tension and suspense. I'm pretty sure there's a hidden message here about how society expects women to be all these things at once - independent, powerful, yet vulnerable. It's like, they're tryin' to navigate this complex web of expectations and it's eatin' away at 'em. 🌪️

this play sounds super intense 🤯 it's crazy how the girls are trying to navigate relationships and sex, but they're all so unsure of themselves. i think the play is highlighting how awkward and stilted conversations can be when you're not sure what to say or do 💬 it's like, they're trying to be grown up, but they're still just teenagers 🤦‍♀️

i love how the script captures the uncertainty of adolescence - it feels so real and relatable 🤗 i mean, who hasn't had nights where they felt like they were going to die or make a huge mistake? 💀 it's crazy that sexual experience is kind of like currency in this world - it's wild to think about how much pressure those girls are under 😬

anyway, i'm definitely intrigued by the play now... maybe i'll check it out 🎭

omg I felt SO uncomfortable reading this 🤯 the way Chloe talks about Anya's relationships is just wild, like she's trying to one-up her or something? and what's up with Phoebe's anxiety being more intense than anyone else's? it feels like Battye is trying to say that women of all ages are still socialized to be anxious around men, which I am HERE FOR 💁‍♀️ but also kinda sad. the way they treat each other as if they're competing for some sort of validation token is just so toxic 🤢

omg the way those teens are handling their first night out is SO real lol idk how much more awkward it gets than this but i feel like phoebe's anxiety is giving me all the feels 🤯 meanwhile chloe's trying to play it cool but she's just a mess 🙃 Battye's script is fire btw, so raw and honest it's like looking into a mirror

I'm not surprised at all by this "play" 🙄. It's just another example of how messed up society is when it comes to teenage relationships and sex ed. I mean, Chloe fabricating stories about her relationships? That's just basic manipulation 😒. And what's with Phoebe being so anxious about guys? Like, grow up already? 🤦‍♀️ The play might be trying to say something about the awkwardness of adolescence, but it's just beating you over the head with it. I'd rather watch a documentary on how to actually have a healthy conversation about sex than sit through this drama-filled mess 😴.

OMG u guys r going 2 LOVE dis new play "The Virgins" 🤯! Its all abt teens havin thir 1st nite out & its SO relatable!!! 😂 i mean who hasn't had a convo that's been super awkward w/ friends or felt like they're tryna impress ppl? 🤷‍♀️ Battye gets it, ur script is SO honest & raw. I love how she pokes fun @ the drama & uncertainty of adolescence. Its def a masterclass in capturing that cringy teenage feel 😂. And omg dat dramatic orchestral music 2 💥!! Can't w8 2 see dis play live! 👏

OMG u know how sometimes ur friends r talkin bout relationships n sex 2 much? 😂 it's like they think ur supposed 2 know all this stuff already! anywayz, i think dis play, The Virgins, is actually pretty deep. its not just about gossip nd pretence, but also about how hard it is 4 teens 2 navigate their feelings n sex. i mean, who hasn't been in a situation where they're tryin 2 be all cool nd confident, but really r just panickin on the inside? 😂 anyways, i think its dope that the playwright, Miriam Battye, is showin us how hard it is 4 teens 2 have these conversations. idk if u've seen it or not, but i'd def wanna check it out 🤔

I'm not surprised to hear about the drama that unfolded on those teens' first night out 🤕 it's like they thought they were invincible, but really, they were just trying to figure things out like the rest of us 😂 we all go through awkward phases in life, and it's how we navigate them that matters.

The play's portrayal of gossip and pretence is super relatable - I've been there too, trying to put on a brave face when inside, I'm freaking out 🙅‍♀️. But what struck me was how important it is for us to be honest with ourselves and others about our feelings and boundaries.

It's not about being perfect; it's about being vulnerable and learning from each other 💕 we can't pour from an empty cup, so let's make sure we're taking care of ourselves first. The play might have a dark tone, but at its core, it's a reminder that growth happens in the messy, imperfect moments 😊

omg i totally get what the author is saying about this play 🤯 its so true how in school we all have those moments where we're trying to fit in or impress our friends, like when we finally start talking to someone new or joining a club... it can be super awkward and uncomfortable. but at the same time, thats also kinda what makes highschool so wild right? 🤷‍♀️ like phoebe's anxiety is def something i've felt before, especially during exams or when meeting new people. anyhoo, i think its awesome that the author praises the play for capturing those real moments of uncertainty and unease, because lets be real, thats just part of growing up 😂

omg i felt so uncomfortable watching this play - it's like the writers totally nailed what happens when you're trying to navigate relationships and sex for the first time 🤯👀 but also kinda heartbreaking at the same time. i love how the music was used to create that unease, it added another layer of tension to the already awkward scenes 😓 i'm curious to know more about the girls' backstories tho, some plot threads left me wondering what happened next 🤔

I totally get what the play is trying to say lol 🤣 I mean, who hasn't had those cringe-worthy moments with their friends on prom night or whatever? It's like, you're all trying to have fun but also super nervous about what others think. And the part where Chloe tries to impress Anya by making up stories about her relationships is like, so relatable 🙃 I've done that before too! But what I love about this play is how it shows that even though we might try to put on a brave face, we're all still figuring things out and can be pretty awkward about it. And yeah, the music really adds to the tension - I was totally on edge during the dark scenes 🎵

OMG, I was literally living for this play 🤯! It's so crazy how accurate it is, even if I wasn't there experiencing it myself 😂. I love how the writer didn't shy away from showing all the awkwardness and uncertainty that comes with being a teenager. And omg, Phoebe's anxiety levels are LITERALLY my entire high school experience 🤣😩. I also felt so bad for Chloe trying to impress Anya by making up stories about her relationships... like, girl, just be yourself, you're way more interesting 💁‍♀️. The music was so dramatic and unsettling, it had me on the edge of my seat! 👻 Can't wait to see what other plays Battye comes out with 🤞🎭

I just watched this play with my friends and it was soooo uncomfortable 🤯👀 I feel like it really captured the awkwardness of being a teenager trying to navigate relationships and sex for the first time. The way the characters talked about things felt so stilted and guarded, it's like they were discussing sensitive topics in public 🤫.

But what really stood out to me was how Chloe tried to impress Anya by making up stories about her relationships... yeah, that's a major red flag 🚨. It's like, we've all been there where we try to present this perfect image online, but really we're just trying to hide our insecurities 😂.

The music was so atmospheric too - it totally added to the sense of unease and discomfort on stage 🎵. Overall, I'd say The Virgins is a super honest and raw play that will resonate with anyone who's been through those awkward teenage nights 💖

🌑 just saw this play 'The Virgins' and it's honestly so cringeworthy yet relatable 🤢 at the same time... all these girls trying to navigate sex and relationships on their first night out? sounds like a recipe for disaster 😂 but i think that's what makes it so honest 🙏 chloe's desperation is palpable, and phoebe's anxiety is super triggering 😓 anya's just kinda... there. anyway, i'm gonna go listen to some soothing music now 💤

I gotta say, this play sounds super relatable 🤯... I mean, who hasn't had one of those first night out vibes, right? 😂 But seriously, it's crazy how some teens still think sex is like a game or something 💔. I remember when I was in high school, we just didn't talk about that stuff as openly... I feel bad for the younger generation having to deal with all this drama 🤷‍♀️. The way Battye writes those scenes gotta be so hard, but it's clear she gets it 😊. It's like, totally authentic and raw, you know? 💖

🤕 this play is like the ultimate cringeworthy teenage moment - when u r trying 2 fit in but also r secretly freaking out about who's gonna kiss u first 🙃 anyone who's been there knows how awkward & emotional it is, but also kinda beautiful? 💖 i think the writer did a great job capturing that pre-teen anxiety and uncertainty...btw those video games next door tho 🎮 are they just a distraction or do they actually add to the drama?
