Things reek, stink and pong – but why are there no verbs for describing a delightful odour? | Adrian Chiles

the lack of a specific verb for nice smells in english is pretty noticeable 😊. i mean, how many times have u tried 2 describe a lovely scent without using words like "nice" or "pleasant"? it's like we're stuck with these vague adjectives that just don't do justice to the experience. and it's not just about language, either - our brains are wired 2 respond differently 2 pleasant smells than unpleasant ones 🤯. i've heard stories of people smelling something from their childhood & suddenly being transported back in time... it's like smell is a direct line 2 memory 💭. maybe we need a verb that captures all the emotions & memories associated with a particular scent? that would be pretty cool 👍

Smells are like a time machine for your brain 🕰️! I totally get why Adrian Chiles is missing a word in English that can describe a pleasant smell - it's like trying to put a finger on a feeling 😊. Our words like "nice" or "pleasant" just don't cut it, you know? They're like, yay, the thing smells good, but what about the emotions and memories that come with it? 🤔

I mean, have you ever smelled something from your childhood and instantly gone back to that time in your life? It's crazy how powerful scents can be! 💥 And it's not just personal experiences - smells can evoke emotions too. Like, who hasn't walked into a coffee shop or a bakery and been instantly transported to a happy place? ☕

It's weird that we don't have a word for this in English, but I think it's an opportunity to learn more about other languages and how they describe sensory experiences 🌎. And hey, maybe we just need to invent our own words or phrases to capture the magic of smells 😊!
