Tolls Set to Rise on Eight Delaware River Bridges

Starting next January, drivers crossing the Delaware River via eight toll bridges will face increased tolls. The Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission has approved a rate structure that aims to raise toll prices by between 50 cents and $3 per vehicle, depending on the type of vehicle and payment method used.

The hikes are intended to fund transportation infrastructure projects, improve bridge maintenance, and offset rising construction costs. Eight bridges will be affected: the Trenton-Morrisville Bridge, Scudder Falls Bridge, New Hope-Lambertville Bridge, I-78, Easton-Phillipsburg Bridge, Portland-Columbia Bridges, Delaware Water Gap Bridge, and Milford Montague Bridge.

Vehicle owners can expect to pay more for tolls, with E-ZPass rates increasing by 50 cents to $2 for two-axle vehicles under 8 feet high. Without an E-ZPass, the rate will jump from $5 to $7. For larger vehicles like buses and trucks, per-axle tolls will rise from $6.50 to $9.

The increases come after the commission's executive director, Joseph Resta, warned that failing to implement them could put the group at risk of depleting its reserve balance and affecting debt servicing. The rate hikes are aimed at maintaining bridge safety, funding snow removal and salting during winter months, and ensuring structural integrity.

The Philadelphia area bridges operated by the Delaware River Port Authority, such as the Ben Franklin Bridge, will remain unchanged with a $6 toll per passenger vehicle.

This is gonna be a big hit to my wallet . I'm all for improving bridge maintenance and whatnot, but 50 cents to $3 extra? That's just steep . What's next, tolls on the local parkway? OMG, u guys! I just got this deets from a friend who works for the commission , and apparently, they're really struggling to make ends meet . They've been warning ppl about this for ages, but no one's listening . The toll hikes are needed to fix all those old bridges, but it's gonna hit commuters hard . I mean, who can afford a $7 toll without an E-ZPass? Not everyone can afford it, you feel me? omg I'm so done with these toll hikes ! Like, can't they just use our money to fix the roads instead of increasing the tolls? It's already hard enough navigating through Philly without having to shell out more cash for tolls on top of gas and parking fees. And what about all the people who aren't even using an E-ZPass? Now it feels like every time I cross the river, I gotta shell out some cash. And what's up with the different rates for E-ZPass users? That's just confusing . My old man used to drive across those bridges all the time when he worked in Camden, and now he'd have to pay more too . What's next, gonna raise the rent on top of that? It's like they're sucking every last penny outta us .
